I'm not entirely sure why Merlin wasn't included in Monty Python, I guess Tim the enchanter was the substitute for it...
Timeline wise for the Merlin - Arthur friendship in Canon Legend though is that Merlin helped Uther and Igraine hide him so he'd grow up safely, then he stays with Arthur, training him in stately matters until Uther dies and he pulls the sword from the stone and needs to get married. Then he is lured away by Nimueh asking to train under him and he tells her all his secrets then she locks him inside a tree as she's not interested in him now she has his skills. He does make her promise to look out for Arthur the best she can though as she's sealing him up.
