Combining the results from here and SubscribeStar, Kobolds animation is the decisive winner, so I have already spent 6h today making improvements to this 2 years old scene and even added another Kobold peeping through the door :)
By sheer luck I also noticed that motion blur now works on the fluid sim in that project - which is incredible as that functionality was not in Blender back when I first made this. The sim that I did in RealFlow must've had motion vectors in it and while Cycles wasn't able to read them at the time, now it can! That means much more realistic fluids are now possible for me in general, the only downside is that I'll have to use RealFlow for fluid sims, which is both good and bad - bad because it's an external program so I will have to be exporting stuff back and forth, but good because it's much more powerful for fluid sims than what's in Blender.
Anyway, the scene is rendering now, will probably take a week to finish.
P.S. Don't worry about the distortion in this render - it only appears that way because it's equirectangular projection which is suited for VR headsets among other things.
