Let me just get this out of the way: this chapter is a big one. 14k words (my longest release yet), and it's all mecha action, sci-fi horror, plus a good measure of worldbuilding. I... may have gotten carried away! This - plus the holidays - are the reason it's been a little while since the last story update. As you can hopefully see, I haven't been idle! And this chapter sets the stage for all kinds of things that will prove important as Kione and Sartha hurtle towards Rescue Hound's climax...

Absolutely phenomenal work, with the descriptions and the way you weave the narrative so delicately around and through so many points without becoming snarled or hitting a snag. I'm curious as to the Handler's true goal with Kione, because I keep thinking that it is not her looking for another Equal but rather that step above Hound as a Hound is above Mutts. A working partner, who understands enough. I keep circling back to this idea of a Pack Leader, especially with how carefully Kione is being prepared to see the other dogs as LESS and the Mutts as purely unfortunates. To guide the pack, the hunt, even from afar given Kione's own self-admitted tactical acumen. Having read now the Warhound stories as well, and seeing how the Handler keeps commenting with pride about how far her Hounds are able to be from her I think she realizes that she cannot rely entirely on being the one in charge of them all. Combined with the nature of the Empire as we've heard, they want "mass production". But really, that's a loaded term. They don't want endless tides of templates, so much as they want predictable results from an expenditure. If the Handler can turn Kione into an extension of her training and methods, it means others can too in time. Making the process scalable even if slowly and carefully but it means it's not bespoke it's REPLICABLE. I'm also constantly left salivating over the idea of the like, Empress or High Princess or some such that greenlit the Handler's program and whether or not they have their own dedicated Guard Dog now.
