The Soulquarians which were a collective of artists who felt their music was more "pure" in the early 2000s were basically hip hop/R&B counter culture. They felt that the real essence was getting lost so they reflected it on their albums. The Roots "Things Fall Apart", "Voodoo", "Like Water for Chocolate", etc. made numerous references to the real shit being their own music and how they chose to portray it. The opposite basically was the shiny suit Puff Daddy Bad Boy era and R&B songs that were so syrupy and one note. Think Joe's "I wanna know" even though I think that song is a classic that I would still belt out at karoake lol.

2023-04-21 23:10:19 +0000 UTCI’m gonna write a lot, but I wanted to start off by saying while D’Angelo is a consummate musician and can play several instruments and contributes that skill on several songs here such that despite having several incredibly talented session musicians here his fingerprints are everywhere and the creative vision is singular . (Guitar, Bass, a bit of drums though he sometimes just programmes em on the MPC here when Questlove isn’t the one playin em) His primary instrument at this phase of his career was piano and keyboards. He actually played Rhodes (electric) piano on almost every song here. It’s just low in the mix tinkling away and holding down the harmonic information most of the time but for example One Mo’Gin the little sugar notes and all the harmony were that piano and not guitar. Ok now that that’s out of the way, this album is like a gold mine of interesting music lore and stuff especially from a musician’s standpoint. Every session musician is basically many an aspiring musician’s role model. Look at Charlie Hunter for example dude was basically playing the bass and guitar parts on one instrument at the same time on songs like The Root and Spanish Joint. Questlove was in essence copilot here, they spent hours studying other musicians and basically jamming to their songs until original songs materialised. Did all of that in the Studio Hendrix built, with the same Rhodes piano Stevie Wonder played on Talking Book. Other projects spawned from these sessions, they traded songs, Common, The Roots, Erykah, Mos Def all have stuff that spawned from here, some you’ve heard that are just as good. Also this whole paragraph disjointed as hell but I did want to mention that this albums chief innovations are in the rhythm section and song structure, the drum philosophy here is basically the same thing Dilla did, D’Angelo kind of came across the same approach parallel to him before obsessing over Dilla’s approach anyways when he heard his stuff and that interview you saw while reacting to Dilla way back when has a segment where Questlove basically explained both Dilla time and the kinship Dilla and D’Angelo share. As far as structure goes you noted it sounds more like jams than ebb and flow rather than the strictly verse chorus verse thing pop music has which is why people didn’t immediately get into it I think. In fact this album didn’t sell well initially, until D released the music video for How Does It Feel, that video is pivotal both for boosting this album’s profile significantly, but also for kick starting a chain of events that would lead to fans harassing and sexualising him on stage instead of engaging in the music. He spiralled and didn’t release anything for 14 years after all of that (Black Messiah is another incredible album, he’s become a whole lot more than the just proficient guitarist he was in the Voodoo era so he delegates the role much less and you can really here it in sonic palette choices, you’ll love it.), and was for a long time an artist who appeared to be following the footsteps of other artists who kind of crashed and burned after getting too close to the fame sun, Sly Stone being the most apt comparison because he too was a hands on, one man band style musical innovator whose work is cited by Quest as being a direct influence here (D also covers Sly a lot live) but Sly never could kick his drug habit and never recovered like D did

Also crazy to think it was being recorded in electric lady land studios at the exact same time as Things Fall Apart by the Roots Black on Both Sides by Mos Def and not to mention Voodoo by D’Angelo bahah?!?! everyone reading this should definitely google the soulaquarians if you haven’t they're one of the best groups in the history of music in my eyes
