2023-03-11 09:44:36 +0000 UTCNow P-Funk is some of the best music out there, I wouldn’t be opposed to a Parliament-Funkadelic reaction personally

2023-03-09 16:24:14 +0000 UTCYou would definitely be surprised by a Maggot Brain listen - wild album, and much different than a track like Knee Deep (which was sampled for Eye Know)
Lucas Reynolds
2023-03-06 11:25:35 +0000 UTCyou never listening to Funkadelic is good to know, because i highly HIGHLY recommend that you listen to their album Maggot Brain before you ever do Gambino's Awaken My Love. I think its really important lol
Antonio
2023-03-05 23:51:06 +0000 UTCfully agreed lol. bob will enjoy People's Instinctive Travels and Midnight Marauders way more than The Low End Theory imo
chris
2023-03-05 23:41:53 +0000 UTChard agree with you listening to Funkadelic. you don't even need to react you just need to hear that music lol. legendary musicianship

2023-03-05 18:19:33 +0000 UTC100% Gravediggaz deserves a listen

2023-03-05 14:36:47 +0000 UTCI get why u picked this album and Tha Carter. I just think you would've enjoyed Stakes is High and Tha Carter 3 much better. But, whatever, rock on!

2023-03-05 00:33:34 +0000 UTCThis was so great! So fun to re-live this. Digging through the greats channel did a great breakdown of why this album is so important and the tragedy behind it. https://youtu.be/07-IEONSbaw

2023-03-04 18:34:36 +0000 UTCIf you liked the production overall on this, Prince Paul was at the helm. Like I said before, this coming Spooky October's gotta be Gravediggaz. That was also his baby, with RZA. It's just crazy. I think you'd love it. The energy, the "horrorcore", something different fo sho!
Tim Marlowe
2023-03-04 18:33:59 +0000 UTCPaul's Boutique is crazy with the samples. How the hell did they get all those samples cleared, tho?
Tim Marlowe
2023-03-04 18:31:35 +0000 UTCIt'd from Schoolhouse Rock, 3 is the magic number. I think that's where he remembers it from, not Spiderman. We in our 40s suuun, we go deeper than that. Ha!
Tim Marlowe
2023-03-04 18:29:50 +0000 UTCFirst time listen along with you. Clearly take it off was Kendrick’s inspiration for the first verse of N95

2023-03-04 14:24:38 +0000 UTCIf you liked the sampling on this album you should definitely listen to Paul's Boutique by the Beastie Boys. It came out the same year and features a huge number of samples from a variety of genres.

2023-03-04 12:34:36 +0000 UTCI love this album so much. It's great all their work is now easily available. This was the first hip-hop album I ever bought, probably about 20 years ago. Until then I'd only listened to rock music didn't like rap and had never given it a chance. I hadn't listened to it in full for years until yesterday. I'm pleased that it's just as good as I remember.

2023-03-04 12:27:00 +0000 UTCHaving listening to De La for a decade its so nice to see them get to recognition Rip Dove. Ps Hope you do Death Certificate by Ice Cube one of the illest eva.

2023-03-04 01:50:04 +0000 UTCThe Magic Number is from School House Rocks. It used to play on Saturday mornings between cartoons. Also, I recommend watching the Buddy video before you do the reflection on the album. Different beat, includes Phife, Queen Latifah and Monie Love. I know the request list is long but consider the album Never Better by P.O.S. Plenty of lyrics to dig into and unpredictable production.

2023-03-04 01:32:48 +0000 UTCListening to this again, after loving it throughout high school over a decade ago, it strikes me how nonsensical a lot of the lyrics feel. But also, I agree with Bob that the production's sound does not suffer from age. And it's pretty cool they managed to convincingly reassemble this album with what samples they could clear; the missing samples didn't really strike my ear as odd. For me, the power of this album is rooted in how proudly oddball & fun these guys are. Unlike this album, "De La Soul Is Dead" is an album where I could tell you the gist of every song. It's much more lyrically direct. There's still some absurdity and quirky phrasing, but Prince Paul's production still grooves and bangs.

2023-03-04 01:30:59 +0000 UTCthe magic number was at the end of the newest spiderman movie, that might be where you recognize it from
Tristan
2023-03-04 00:33:02 +0000 UTCThe crazy thing is, People's Instinctive Travels is like a companion piece to Midnight Marauders (or vice versa)...so technically, he should've listened to Low End Theory last lol. Shows how much of a game-changer Low End Theory was.

2023-03-04 00:27:32 +0000 UTCBob, if you're looking for a continuation of this vibe, I would recommend Tribe's first album "People's Instinctive Travels". Difference is, it has more of a cohesive/jazzy sound (courtesy of Q-Tip) and a much shorter tracklist.
Will H
2023-03-04 00:22:02 +0000 UTCseeing Bob enjoy this makes me kinda think that he shouldve started with Tribe's first album instead of Low End Theory in any case De La Soul's first four albums are essential. Their 2nd album "De La Soul is Dead" is a direct response to this album. "Stakes is High" is my fave tho (their 4th album).

2023-03-04 00:10:00 +0000 UTCNever listen to them before bout to hit what it hit for

2023-03-03 23:06:57 +0000 UTCDe La were fun at a time when being tough was the play. I loved when that big smile came over Bob's face and he realized that's what this was. And of course there are dated elements to this album that won't hold up to modern scrutiny but as a whole I think it's still a pretty fun listen, and the production was clearly ahead of its time. The whole thing about Mars and then referring to themselves as Plug One/Plug Two etc is that originally the concept would be that they were broadcasting this album to earth from Mars via three microphone plugs. Posdnous (Pause-duh-news is how to pronounce, it's Sound Op backwards and is short for Sound Operative) was Plug One. Trugoy the Dove (literally just Yogurt backwards because they were goofy as shit) aka Dave was Plug Two, and Maseo was Plug Three though I don't remember if he even had a verse on this album, he's primarily the DJ. There's still so much to discover with older hip hop if you have an open mind (which clearly you do Bob) and I'm glad to see you going back occasionally.

2023-03-03 22:35:45 +0000 UTCOlder hip hop albums are always gonna be better as playlists......except for the rare occasions where u dont need to do that but most do........I used to love this album alot more. Feels dated to me now. Happens somtimes

2023-03-03 22:31:57 +0000 UTCWhen I got my first car (~2012) all I had was a CD player. I would go to Raputin's and find random used CD's for like $3.99. I got this album, 3 Outkast albums, Liquid Swords, all RATM albums, Deltron 3030 all for under $5 each. I mostly stopped listening to this album once I got a car with bluetooth built into it, just because it wasn't on streaming service and I'm a creature of convenience. I'm so happy that it is on streaming now.
