This is a great stepping stone for Donuts. Both are albums made from a time of grief (Louie was made after he found out his father had cancer, Donuts was made as Dilla died of a blood disease). And Louie being mostly instrumentals, with the vocals being much less important, is a good halfway to the 100% instrumental Donuts. Plus it has a similar structure--both are collections of many short but powerful musical ideas, though much more so in Donuts.
