My audio was a little off on this one. My mic is low and the music is loud. An acceptable mistake for this album.

Bro you should do another dg reaction next month, your dg reactions are funny. Maybe bottomless pit or the powers that b, which both have a lot of rock influence in them.

Paper119

Gotta do bottomless pit man, I would pay a lot of money to see you react to that

Ben

Another great review/reaction man. I had been dipping my toes in Death Grips but have just recently broken through hahaha. I dont know if you take requests here, but: Flatbush Zombies - Better Off Dead Ab-soul - Control System Think you would quite enjoy both of those. Ab-soul was one of the original members of TDE with Kendrick.

Bob I can’t stress this enough you got to check out “Clipping” both their horrorcore albums were theatrical “There existed an addiction to blood” “Visions of bodies being burned” they’re like death grips, a group of 3, 2 producers and 1 rapper and boy can he rap, (someone correct me) but I believe he’s either the first rapper or black artist to win a tony award. Good stuff man. I truly hope you come across these two albums one day have an amazing day Bob.

Marco Garcia

This whole album has been growing on me A LOT over the weekend

Bob_the_Poppop

October, most likely 👍

Bob_the_Poppop

So wild. I feel bad for butchering it, but hopefully it was enough to have people search for it.

Bob_the_Poppop

I'm gonna do them all

Bob_the_Poppop

Cool story :) Thanks for the link

Bob_the_Poppop

<3

Bob_the_Poppop

holy shit

Bob_the_Poppop

Very well could be, especially if both get him all jacked up

Bob_the_Poppop

I like this idea

Bob_the_Poppop

I don't know Floyd's early music very well :(

Bob_the_Poppop

Fair enough

Bob_the_Poppop

Thanks for the support!

Bob_the_Poppop

It keeps growing on me too... amazing track

Bob_the_Poppop

My fav too. Its the ping for me.

If you liked Exmilitary and 1000 gecs, then "KicK iii" released last year by Arca would definitely be an album to try. To give some context to her style and caliber, Arca has produced songs for both Kanye (on Yeezus) and Björk (on Utopia). After sitting with the music of Death Grips, JPEGMAFIA, Danny Brown and clipping for so long I was convinced that that was as mind warping as hip hop was gonna get, and that was true for me until I heard Kick iii. Translations are all in the Genius annotations. An extremely cool album worth listening to just for the experience of it

Justin

"Known for It" is one of my favorite tracks, too. That recurring sample entrances me from the start. I'm the type of listener who likes the drone music of Time Machines/Coil, so repetition is more than fine by me. Actually, the dynamic quality of a lot of modern hip-hop, including beat switches, can put me off if done formulaically. Death Grips tends to surround a repetitive beat with a pallet of variable sounds, though I guess that pallet isn't really there for "Known for It." A weird little exception in an album full of exceptions.

Dareka

Guillotine was the first Death Grips song and I had no idea what the fuck I'd just heard or if I even enjoyed it but I knew I needed to hear more

Jeremy Trull

There's an ongoing trend with Bob not really digging my favorite track on an album, so thank you for keeping that trend alive by not digging Known For It lmao, one of my favorite instrumentals of all time! It's almost hypnotic for me, but I've always loved very repetitive beats in music. It may grow on you, but funny enough I had the same dichotomy with my dad when I used to show him music I liked growing up, we would mostly enjoy the same music, but if I REALLY liked something, that would almost always be a lowlight for him. Hard to say why exactly but I think the comparison is interesting to make.

Lil Mac

Jenny Death is way more rock influenced imo

Christopher Bloom

After this reaction I especially suspect Bob would really dig No Love Deep Web, it's probably their most underrated record, hope he does it next.

Christopher Bloom

We just need a clipping album now to complete the trifecta of the top experimental hip hop artists.

Cory

I’ve been revisiting NWTS a lot over a few drinks on the weekend and I would love to see it on the next marble tournament 👌🏻 Super hyped to see it pop up whenever

Tribecalledjoe

I'm in the middle of this video and I just finished Cut Throat where you were talking about how the meaning is "make meaningful music", and you just talked about rejecting the idea that the previous song is about drugs. I 100% agree. I think this whole album is about rejecting the status quo and just making meaningful art. I think the album is about more than just music, but art and human expression more generally. MC Ride - or Stefan Burnett - actually does physical art too, I'd highly recommend checking some of it out, it's really interesting.

Yarden

Think you would like Jenny Death and Bottomless Pit too. Jenny Death has heavy rock influences and Bottomless Pit has a ton of punk ones. All their albums are unique sonically, its great. I truly believe Death Grips have quietly influenced a ton of artists this past decade. Kanye had to have been listening to No Love Deep Web when making Yeezus, no one can convince me otherwise lol

Luke Carnicle

Glad you remembered that story I shared with you! It’s truly one of the most powerful things I’ve come across, and is the reason I’m such a fan of Death Grips.

VeganMilk

You HAVE to do Bottomless Pit at some point, it’s their most rock/metal-oriented album. You’ll love it.

VeganMilk

I kind of wished you listened to Exmilitary before the money store. I listened to Exmilitary when I was a kid and remember being mindblown. Then after getting a feel for who death grips were they drop the money store and I was like 'whoa this is special'. Some of their late stuff for me got too experimental and I kind of tuned out but they have other great albums in the middle of their discography imo. Fun fact, I remember reading that David bowie would listen to death grips and kendrick Lamar as inspiration for his final album which is crazy to me. Also here's a funny story about the time Fantano met MC Ride for the first time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uAuXdCg6e4

Mohammad Moeladawilah

Looking Forward to any other Death Grips content on the channel Bob :D

rose

This was a fucking awesome reaction

six

The official pressing vinyl for this is unfortunately selling for $700 on Discogs right now

Cullen Hendricks

I think he is talking about both music and drugs at the same time on Takyon.

Shane Harkness

I always interpreted this album as the point of view of a paranoid, schizophrenic, drug-addicted “Exmilitary” veteran. It’s just chaos and nonsense but somehow the nonsense makes sense. It’s an amazing experience

Thesacster

So excited for you to be doing this one. This record had a profound effect on me in Highschool in the evolution of my taste for sounds. Zach Hill’s drums and production + Ride’s vocal range and tones just blew my mind to smithereens.

Rigo Ceballos

So happy you enjoyed Exmilitary. Looking forward to The Powers That B and Bottomless Pit!

Ryan

This has become my favorite Death Grips project. It was Money Store for a very long time but there's something so raw and unhinged about this one with such a unique aesthetic I can't find anywhere else.

Tyler Shobe

I appreciated that you went into the spirituality of the first track. I have rarely seen that song commented on as anything but weird, when it's really a sort of manifesto: for creativity, for performance, for life. So, when you remarked later that you were having a spiritual experience listening to Death Grips and laughed, I was like "Yeah! That's what the first half of this album is!" Quiet though it's kept. While I thought you might have oversold how often Ride is discussing music (as opposed to his stance toward oppressive authorities or his life ethos), it's a welcome and more reasonable alternative to "He's always talking about drugs." I think the musical rapture and delight Ride describes are so far beyond most people's reckoning that they *have* to attribute it to drugs or insanity. And sure, Ride gets high; but he doesn't actually need drugs to have fun! A relevant rap line from Das Racist that's a longtime resident in my thoughts: "RapGenius.com is white devil sophistry / Urban Dictionary is for demons with college degrees." Your point about artistic versatility towards the end rings true. The Money Store sounds almost nothing like the more punk ExMilitary. I believe Zach Hill commented that he thought of Money Store as being like a pop album. I forget how he described No Love Deep Web, but it's definitely NOT pop or punk. As for future DG albums to listen to... I feel like nothing is especially canonical. Folks like Bottomless Pit, but I don't really. Okay, actually, Jenny Death is the next big splash. It would have to be, especially if you know what the lead-up to its release was like. But No Love has its own wild story, too, and is a logical continuation. Follow your bliss, I say!

Dareka

^^ the best site for quickly finding samples used in a song. fun place to fall down rabbit holes.

Psykopomp

This if by far my favourite album from DG, its the most raw, loud and kickass they have ever done. If you're wondering where that cool guitar and sample from I Want It I Need It comes from, its actually from Pink Floyds first album, The Piper at The Gates of Dawn. Its from the Track Interstellar Overdrive. I was surprised you didn't recognise it since you're a Floyd fan, but I guess its only their first album, the only one featuring the late great Syd Barret. Still though, cool reaction and looking forward to your Peggy LP reaction and future Death Grips reactions. Cheers

Raitis Stafeckis

Love this album. If you don't know about it already, there's a good website to find the samples in songs. https://www.whosampled.com/

ethan be

LMAO the end of Klink, dope album. Dope reaction as always.

kezeye

This is awesome, also Bob you are right about MC Ride talking about the experience of DG’s music on people and the industry however he is also clearly talking about drug addiction. I think they purposefully conflate the two together.
