Death Grips - Money Store Album (Full Uncut Reaction)

Comments

All good, but I gotta +1 them for this. Having heard some of your opinions on rock/electronic/hip hop following this reaction, I really think you're going to be floored by that album. Exmilitary might just scratch your every itch.

toast

That's on my list, but it'll be awhile before I cycle back to DG again.

Bob_the_Poppop

Check out Exmilitary, their first mixtape, it's definitely "must listen"

Konstantin Sechenov

That's one of my favorites too. So great, even better for it to shine now as an 'old school' album

Bob_the_Poppop

so glad you mentioned the prodigy :) music for the jilted generation was my favourite album as a kid

allie hernandez

You're all good, dude, don't worry about advocating for an artist you love. That makes me more interested in their music than the typical 'react to so n so' comments. It gives me insight. Honestly, I'm open to listening to everything. My biggest restriction is time.

Bob_the_Poppop

Thanks for this insight. I think I agree too. WLR seems more like a party album while TMS is more for raging

Bob_the_Poppop

lol, I love this comment because that's exactly how it felt. This also makes me want to watch other people react to this album for the first time just to see their minds blown as well. Now I can understand why this album was so heavily requested for a reaction

Bob_the_Poppop

lol, thanks man. It was a wild ride, no doubt. Something has already happened though, because I've done additional listens and my brain has reacted completely differently. Instead of freaking out, it's now like, "Yeah, all good." It's like I needed a 24hr period to craft new neuron and synapses for the Death Grips signals to travel along lol

Bob_the_Poppop

I'll get there eventually. I'm going to do his work in order (with the exception of Yeezus since that was so insanely requested). I look forward to it even though it bums me out knowing what happened in his life prior to the album

Bob_the_Poppop

Also this was the first album he released after his mother died in 2008 and also his girl at the time cheated on him. It's the first album after the bear trilogy so I geuss do graduation first :) just excited for you to experience this stuff

Dominic Chan

You gotta do kanyes 808 and heartbreaks! Musically you won't anything so different that changed the course of modern hip hop in such a big way. There's a reason why some people regard Kanye as a genius and it's because of his constant evolution in his earlier music with yeezus and 808s! Love your reactions as always

Dominic Chan

Major respect to you for taking on Death Grips HAHA! I do feel this might not be the easiest first listen into the DG discography, was thinking it’d be better if you started off with Atrocity Exhibition by Danny Brown or There Existed an Addiction to Blood by Clipping first to get into industrial/experimental hiphop. Either way, love the work you’ve been doing Bob! Can’t wait for the To Pimp A Butterfly album reaction

HiSO

I loved your reaction, because really, what the fuck are you supposed to react when you listen to Death Grips for the first time? Laughter, because it is so out there, and so unexpected, it's funny. I also love when people react to Death Grips for the first time because, understandably, people try to listen for patterns to enjoy some musicality out of it, but it's so jarring and changes so quickly that it's very hard on a first listen. It's a mix of "Oh yea I can see something here" and then "what the fuck is this" in the next second.

I love both whole lotta red and the money store but they are very different albums. WLR is essentially a high energy party album meant to hype people up. TMS covers super dark complex topics like police brutality, drug abuse, sexual assault, addiction, etc. Also i think objectively Dearh Grips are better musicians than the producers of WLR. There’s a lot of skill that goes into the production. Plus one of the members, Zach Hill, is an extremely talented drummer and has a long history as an experimental musician. Check this short video of his INSANE drum rehearsal: https://youtu.be/vgzSP05q0as . I see how they come off as similar but I think death grips puts a LOT more skill and expertise into their sound and lyrics, even if they’re chaotic. Nevertheless I love both albums for their respective purposes.

lucas misclevitz

Yeah I think doing it in release order makes sense, so Kids see Ghosts after Ye

Dylan

I know no one else is going to recommend this and it’s a crazy long shot but i’d love you to check out Aesop Rock. In my opinion the best writer, from any genere ever that i’ve heard, and i listen to a lot of diffrent music lol. His songs are masked in similes and metaphors and some of his shit is just so insanely clever and I know if you checked him out you’d love him. I would recommended either ‘the impossible kid’, Bestiary, or ‘Malibu Ken’. Anyways only check it out if you want, I don’t want you to think i’m entitled to the request I just know you would love it, and it would help grow your channel as i’ve seen many other channels. Aesop fans are the type of people to seek this content out and i’ve seen a lot of smaller channels who’se biggest videos are always Aes songs. Anyways I hope i don’t come off as an ass or anything I just really love this artist and i had to put it into the world. Deep, Lyrical, underground hip hop is just too special for me to not at least mention- and he’s not even _that_ underground, just underappreciated lol. Anyways thank you for this reaction, I always like to think of deathgrips as schizophrenic pcp rap lol, it’s always interesting seeing people react for the first time!

C C

Rush’s 2112.. got it! I will put it on my list, thank you for the suggestion and great reply!

You should listen to Kanye in order. Kid cudi is featured on every Kanye album since 808 so you get to see their chemistry up untill the album was dropped. It was released in 2018 so you would listen to it after "Ye".

Emmanuel

I wonder if I might enjoy those a little more. For whatever reason, the tones in Get Got didn't do much for me on the initial listen, but I liked the tracks that had deeper tones. We'll get to those other albums eventually 🤘

Bob_the_Poppop

lol, that's so awesome

Bob_the_Poppop

Its a joint album of theirs like Kanye and JayZ’s watch the throne but you should consider it as part of Kanye’s discography and continue going in order with them. Kanye’s works always capture the sound he’s going for at the specific time of the making and you may lose some of the journey of Kanye as a music chronologically if you skip ahead again

Here's a rock suggestion for you, hopefully something that may catch you off guard (nothing like Death GRips though). Check out the album '2112' by the group called Rush. It's highly regarded, considered one of the great classic rock albums, and actually saved the band's career and propelled them into the legendary status they eventually became (they're in the rock hall of fame)

Bob_the_Poppop

I LOVE long comments like this. Love it. Never apologize for cracking off a massive post like that. It gives me a glimpse of how excited people are about music, and that's what I'm all about. I'm glad you felt this was worth the wait, lol... I can see why people were excited to see this. DG definitely brings the heat, and I was not prepared going into it. I did notice some sounds that reminded me of Yeezus, but I couldn't remember which album was recorded first, so I didn't mention it. Thanks for joining the Patreon, and I'm very glad to hear you say it's money well spent. That matters to me. I want people to feel like they're getting something for supporting the channel 🤘

Bob_the_Poppop

I'm looking forward to it also. To see it so highly regarded by so many people for so long, should be a fun ride

Bob_the_Poppop

Kid Cudi is on my list, for sure. I've penciled out the rest of the year as far as albums go, but I need to start looking at January. Seems doable, at least that one or Kids See Ghosts

Bob_the_Poppop

I want to do Kanye in order. Is Kids See Ghosts considered part of Kanye's discography? Is it something that should be heard 'in order' regarding the rest of his work?

Bob_the_Poppop

Yeah that’s a considered a legendary album 👌🏼

You should react to Kanye and Kid Cudis album “kids see ghosts” its only 7 tracks long

Now its onto Injury Reserve's BTIGO

Bryan

you gotta do kid cudi man on the moon

You will love illmatic, looking forward to the reaction!

BOB!!! I have so much to say: Let me start by saying I’ve been watching you nonstop since the yeezus reaction, and I love your content through and though. So when I say I’ve been waiting for this for WEEKS, I really mean it and BOY WAS THIS WORTH THE WAIT!! I’m actually a rap-fan-turned-rock-fan (seems like we’re heading in opposite directions) and I gotta say I’m always so impressed with your ability to listen to such a wide variety of rap music and understand+respect it all. Listening to Kendrick and then someone like Carti or Death Grips right after is no easy feat. As far as Death Grips go, this album is definitely one that grows with time. The fact you liked it so much on your first listen is very fucking impressive. (Fun fact- Kanye drew a FUCK TON of inspiration from The Money Store when making yeezus in 2013, can you hear it?) They’re known for having great live shows, but I don’t think there’s any specifically noteworthy ones on the internet. They have some really interesting music videos (I’ve seen footage, double helix, you might think he loves you, hustle bones) but idk if any of them are necessarily very react-able if that makes sense Personally, I found listening to Death Grips easier when I had a better understanding of the context of their lives/careers/etc, although I might be biased with my friends and I being from the Sacramento area, where DG are from and currently reside (don’t know if you’ve ever been to Sacramento, but their shit gives off very Sacramento vibes). It’s tough cus these guys live veeeery private lives but there’s some YouTube videos I’d recommend like https://youtu.be/R-CtTD0CS9g (12 mins) and https://youtu.be/R-CtTD0CS9g (33 mins) if you’re interested. If you ever review another DG album please fucking make it The Powers that B, and if you don’t you should at least consider a video on the song “On GP”. So much of their shit is horrifically poignant, which you didn’t really get a whole lot of with the money store, and this is a great example! Excited to see what’s down the road. Considering you’re still yet to listen to the best Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, and Carti albums (channel orange, TPAB, and die lit), I see a lot of great things coming soon (I’m also really excited for your life of Pablo reaction, and hopefully some Freddie Gibbs, a tribe called quest, and Outkast down the road). Anyways, I bought this Patreon sub solely so I could watch your complete reaction to punk weight, and I gotta thank you for making it money well spent. Apologies if this was way too long, cheers!

it’s important to know that this is their most “listenable” album which is why most people recommend it as an intro to deathgrips. Albums like bottomless pit or exmilitary are much more industrial sounding and darker. Can’t wait for those reactions eventually!

lucas misclevitz

Theres a funny Video of Tyler moshin in the crowd at a death Grips live performance, Love that Album btw. (All in all it was a pretty lame crowd tho, I think it was at Coachella)

daredevil777

Their live set is just like the album. They perform nonstop. Song after song after song. No intros, no breaks to talk to the crowd and they simply walk off stage at end of set.

Jared Ortega

this is NOT a love at first listen. As a fan of DG I can attest to bouncing off the first time but then one day it gets caught in your bones and you can't explain why.

retrocalie

That's wild to me

Bob_the_Poppop

You picked the right one to sub on. I'm now uploading my FOURTH edited version to YouTube in attempt to have it not get blocked.

Bob_the_Poppop

Illmatic is next week (assuming I can get my schedule to support it, holidays and travel and all that)

Bob_the_Poppop

Some classics are in the works. I wanna get into some of the roots as well. As far as doing the weird ones first, I have no idea which ones are the weird ones since it's all new to me. My method of choosing is a mix of request quantity and what people say about the artists.

Bob_the_Poppop

If you look at me at the beginning of the video compared to the end, it looks like one of those before and after infomercials from 3AM TV. "This is Bob before Death Grips. He's old and tired and cranky. This is Bob after listening to our revolutionary new product, Death Grips. See Bob become revitalized!"

Bob_the_Poppop

Crazy thing is, this is probably death grips most accessible album.

Jack MacArthur

now time for some JPEGMAFIA!

Lorenzo Aguilar

I agree that he should check out Bottomless Pit. And going through their albums chronologically may not be the best idea either like you mentioned because lots of people won't like it lol

eich

Just remember every death grips album and song is gonna be just as hard hitting but also totally different from the last, they change their sound a lot.

Louee

Great video! I wish I could listen to this album for the first time again, but going through a first listen journey with you brought me back to that mindset a bit which was fun. If you want to do more Death Grips in the future (which you definitely should) I think Exmilitary (their mixtape from the year prior) or Bottomless Pit from 2016 would be a great place to start, Exmilitary isn't on Spotify but it's on YouTube and I think if you liked The Money Store you'll like these. especially Bottomless Pit since you're a rocker. Going through their albums chronologically wouldn't be too bad but I'd imagine it would alienate a good chunk of your fanbase so it's up to you haha, great stuff.

Lil Mac

one of my favorite albums of all time. had to sub for this one

Mark Mountain

Death Grips is my fav band of all time but I actually disliked them upon first listen. I’ve noticed a lot of DG fans had the same experience. I feel like the process of becoming a DG fan involves finding that one groove or synth melody that really attracts you in a song, and using that as your saving grace. It’s the chariot you ride till the end of the song, the thing that gets you through all the layers of abrasive noise. And the more and more you listen you pick up on more rhythms, synths, melodies, and eventually you just know what to expect and you listen to their music in the same context you listen to a punk rock song. It’s no longer noise, it’s now an intentional and necessary part of the song. Death Grips hijacks your attention, which is why I like to use their music for working out. Play their music while you’re out on a jog and suddenly the strain you’re exerting on your muscles is no longer your focus of attention because you got this weird ass music damn near giving you a concussion. So glad you were able to enjoy it. Their lyrics don’t get any easier. It is extremely cryptic, but that’s part of the appeal. Enjoy it for music sake and if you want you can delve in and learn about all the historical and occult references they mention in their songs

Justin

Death Grips is either a love or hate type group. There are so many people who hate them but I personally love their music. So all over the place, unique sounds, no one else can make albums like this one. Glad you checked it out. What can we expect for next week? Or is it a surprise

eich

Surprised you're doing the weirder recommendations first, I definitely wouldn't recommend someone who just started listening to hip hop death grips or jpegmafia. Hope you do some classics like pac or early jay z one day🙌🏿

lowkey the best time to listen to death grips is when you feel like shit

I'll be checking out more from them, especially if their albums differ from each other a lot. These guys are something else 🤘

Bob_the_Poppop

Thats not even a terrible album per say, but there are hundreds of albums he needs to hear before this.

Vervanta

I honestly feel like I "reacted" the most on this one. Constant state of my mind being blown away

Bob_the_Poppop

It certainly is not for everyone haha

Bob_the_Poppop

Yeah, it's already growing on me too.

Bob_the_Poppop

My man!

Bob_the_Poppop

Cool! I know you won't do all albums that are recommended to you but listen to yung lean - warlord.

I can’t stand death grips lol

Justin F

Hey Bob, got the Patreon just so I can see the full reaction to this. Glad to be here 👍

eich

The money store is definitely a grower imo. Pretty much every song has grown on me

Litty Again

It's funny you listened to Ministry beforehand because Ministry was actually the opener for Death Grips on their last full tour. Also, all their albums sound wayyyyyy different from each other (other than maybe Bottomless Pit which is comparable to The Money Store... sorta) if you end up checking out any others. Also, last thing, that "laughing" sounds you were mentioning in System Blower is actually the Williams sister (tennis players) grunting while playing tennis that they distorted the shit out of. https://www.whosampled.com/sample/151771/Death-Grips-System-Blower-Serena-Williams-Venus-Williams-Williams-Sisters-Grunting/

Cory

let’s go. been waiting so long

Vervanta

Not my kinda album but this be a intresting watch 4 sure

Been waiting all week for this 🙂
