After his mom died, he started singing a different beginning to Hey Mama when performing live. You can really see his mental decline after she died.

Anika

His mom actually passed away in 2007, and 'Hey Mama' was released before her passing. Also I'm convinced it's impossible not to cry while listening to this track

C C

I'm still struggling with samples and mixes and all of that. My brain automatically thinks it's an instrument being played by someone

Bob_the_Poppop

I'm working Illmatic into my rotation soon

Bob_the_Poppop

A big thing to watch for during kanye albums is not only the lyrics but the amount of sampling he does. Lots of the sounds that you might think are just mixed together are samples.

joe

It's so beautiful and so sad :(

Bob_the_Poppop

I've heard some different opinions on Graduation, all good but slightly varying on how good. I'm looking forward to doing that one when the time comes 👍

Bob_the_Poppop

I saw you talked about how you love dave chappelle so much. Him and Kanye are actually best friends, in the midst of Kanye's Bipolar breakdown back in 2018 he was the guy which flew out too his ranch and stayed for 1 month or so to make sure Kanye is 100% Good. They have history since the early 2000s and even these days are seen together all the time.

Tyson Jankowiak

I can't wait for you to react to the next album in Kanyes discog Graduation. A lot of people consider it kanyes best (tbh I change my fav like every year) and it's considered to be the album that lamented him as one of the best in rap, even though it's a "pop" esque album. Great reaction glad I joined the Patreon.

BOB you said when you listened to gone about the music and lyrics clicking together. Please listen to Affirmative action by nas. 10/10 rap song it's sick

tyler was like 13 when this was made. but good you hear the influence

bL

Thanks for the support, man. I appreciate it. Gone is so incredible. I love it. I have to remember to listen to the rest of the album lol

Bob_the_Poppop

808s and Heartbreak is going to be tough, I think. The journey through Kanye's music has a different tone for me now after hearing Hey Mama

Bob_the_Poppop

Oh, I like this. Thank you. I figured I was missing something. Good double meaning

Bob_the_Poppop

Cant wait for the 808s & heartbreak video, it's my personal fav

daredevil777

Love how open minded and honest you are man, you seem so wise! So glad you enjoyed Gone it’s my favourite Kanye track, the way the production bounces off the verses is incredible, excited to hear your verdict after going back and listening a few more times with the lyrics. Forgot how emotional Hey Mama was, you can find videos of him singing it to his mum on YouTube that get me every time! His next album Graduation is the last one he released before the passing of his mum, and that’s where you can see a real change in kanye’s mentality. 808’s in such an emotional album I can’t wait to see you experience it.

Callum Smith

Gone is so great. SO great. Loved it immediately, love it now, love it forever. I even played it for my son. He said he liked the music, but he isn't used to hearing vocals in that kind of style yet. I'm gonna crack up if it ends up being me that gets him into hip-hop

Bob_the_Poppop

Dropout does have this feel of being 'safe' with what it does. I can't explain it. There's just this touch of... boundary. Don't cross this line, don't cross that line. It feels like it exists in a corporate box. LR feels like what you're saying—open, free, charismatic. Kanye gets to be Kanye on this one and probably gets told 'no' a lot less. Obviously all assumptions on my part, but there ya go

Bob_the_Poppop

Collage dropout always felt like a school community collage play and this album feels like a full Broadway musical. It’s the first time we fully got to see Kanye’s artistry unhinged. No more people doubting him and he had all the resources to make his ideas come to life. Tracks like gone and we major ooze with charisma and high production value which is why for me it’s the best from the collage era of Kanye. Dropout lacks confidence and graduation is too pop. There was also meant to be a final part to this era called good as job but we never got it cause of his mother passing. But it did give us 808 which I think you’ll like

So glad you loved gone so much, one of my favourite Kanye songs and that last verse is unbelievably good. You should think of it as the closing track of the album as the last two are bonuses. The last lyric in the song is also “Sorry Mr West is gone” which links to the opening track “Wake up Mr West”. Love the videos :)

. .

Hey mama , I felt that too, there a video of him trying to sing it after her passing but just breakdowns, that real love right there

Bryan A

Graduation is up next. and I believe that you'll like it about as much as Yeezus since Graduation uses so many different and unique types of sound with each track. also like Yeezus, Graduation is not too lengthy with it being 54 minutes. for me personally, Graduation is a top 3 Kanye album because I feel it perfectly captures the fun feeling Kanye delivers as an artist. Graduation also has Kanye's most streamed song: "Stronger".

Alex Bowlin

so about that drive slow chorus line. it’s the duality of the chorus so you need to drive slow and look for these women, talk to them rather than just speeding by but on the flip side it’s saying drive slow because you might encounter some women that are going to take advantage of you so don’t rush anything and separate hoes and good girls. just like on a bound 2 “one good girl is worth a thousand bitches”

Adam Dobry

+1 you’ll understand how important it was to kanye to do the best album he could

Adam Dobry

graduation is where the fun begins

Bob_the_Poppop

It's all good, man. Comment away, it's part of being here. I can't imagine how this impacted Kanye. I really can't. A couple people have suggested my doing a reaction to his live performance of 'Hey Mama' after she passed, but I'd be crying my eyes out. There's no way. So I contrast that to how Kanye must have felt/still feels... and I have no words.

Bob_the_Poppop

Dude, you're probably right. There may be some revisits someday.

Bob_the_Poppop

I thought it sounded somewhat familiar, but figured it was just a coincidence. Neat easter egg :)

Bob_the_Poppop

you should watch his hey mama performance at the Grammys! amazing performance

best 2$ one can spend

mussalila

hey new follower! love your content :) at 1:12:19 kanye has a line "projects torn up, gang signs get thrown up". Funnily kendirck used the same line in m.a.a.d city, just a cool little rap easter egg you might enjoy

Dominic Chan

Now that you kinda get the instrumental stuff, you should go back and listen to Tyler in a new light. Like ‘I DONT LOVE YOU ANYMORE’

Isaiah Piedra

People used to say Kanye “went crazy” after his mom died. That was kinda the gossip back then. But it’s like who wouldn’t? That’s a such life altering event, especially when he was so close to her. You really see it unfold on 808’s & Heartbreaks. Sorry for so many comments I’m just commenting as I watch haha

Isaiah Piedra

It’s also cool how Kanye kinda ushered in the wall of sound to rap. He made it mainstream but I’d say the firsts to do it in this way is Pharrell’s old group ‘The Neptunes’. Which btw has a CLASSIC amazing first album

Isaiah Piedra

This album is my favorite album from Kanye, its just special. I think it was put best in an interview with Kanye and he talks about how Jon Brion just wanted people to feel the music. I think that is it.

Landin

Dude, I will ball my fuckin' eyes out trying to watch that knowing the context. I honestly don't think I can handle that.

Bob_the_Poppop

Touch the Sky does it in spades, my man, oh my god. I never wave my arms around and that song just threw them right up, it was amazing lol

Bob_the_Poppop

Main reason I love hip hop so much, it makes you feel ‘fly’. That confidence the music gives you

Isaiah Piedra

If GKMC is ur favourite album so far then I cannot wait for you to listen to TPAB!

Ben Gould

next album is better than college dropout and late registration

What’s up Bob? I hope you’re doing well! I’m excited for your future reactions to Kanye’s work. I just wanted to recommend you watch The Most Unruly’s youtube video titled “Kanye West: The Making of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”. It’s a great mini-documentary that’ll give you some much needed context before you listen to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I promise it’ll make you enjoy it way more!!!

maverick salinas

Ah, thank you.

Bob_the_Poppop

Hip Hop is the culture, Rap is the lyrical act, the action.

jimmyvinyl

His mother passed away 2 months after his 3rd album Graduation. When you have reacted to that album, please react to his Hey Mama Grammy Awards performance (about 3 months after his mother passed). Extremely sad and beautiful performance.

Louie Henry

Nas and Jay Z are Widely regarded as the greatest MCs of all time. Amongst listeners id say its pretty even depending on preference and Illmatic almost universally considered the greatest and most influential Hip Hop album of all time 25 yrs later he won his first Grammy for his Album this year at nearly 50yrs old. Hip hop is proving to have longevity not many thought it would.

Paul Salvador Estrada

Can’t wait for the Graduation reaction!

Litty Again

lol, right? I don't know how to remove it and I kinda dgaf at this point. I'm just gonna upload all day and worry about the minor stuff later.

Bob_the_Poppop

Really flexing that Vimeo Business profile, huh? 😂
