BAEKHUN Mujin Service & Album reaction

Instinctively I knew I wasn't going to be moved by either of these videos but also a part of me wanted to see for myself INCASE I'd miss out since usually Baek does end up giving me SOMETHING I enjoy, but this wasn't the case here.

The mujin service went how I expected it to, I know his voice and his tricks pretty well and I also noticed things I've always noticed about his technique, like his pulling/throat tension which he uses stylistically, often. He also had some nice clean moments with the covers but overall it went how I thought it would.

Now for his album. This felt quite forgettable and repetitive and predictable. Rehashing a recently released The Boyz song as well as Candy felt like a missed opportunity. I don't think the producers he's working with from 100 bring out the best in him at all. This is not an album that sounds artistically free/daring but very complacent and easy listening. If that's what he wants, great but if he's still feeling a little lost maybe a longer break would be necessary so he finds out what he really wants to say.

Some people were saying on twitter that he surpassed Un Village and i'm confused how they got to that conclusion? lol some of the later songs may grow on me if i revisit them at a later time cos by the time i got to them my patience had worn thin.

That's a great question! And tbh something that fascinates me with his sound cos he does have that odd tone and mouth shape and habit and yet his voice is so big and open. It goes to show that the habit of stretching his neck has nothing to do with getting his voice out but rather just a tick? I guess

Koko3op

I don't know anything about singing really but I find it quite intriguing to be honest, especially when you mentioned that when Mujin sings it sounds like he doesn't have a throat and it comes straight from his diaphragm compared to Baekhyun's. I noticed in this episode, along with a lot of the previous ones, that Mujin does have a habit of like stretching his neck or like pushing his head forward/to the side. This is something that I always thought would strain the voice or at the very least add tension. Is there a reason that Mujin still sounds really open and free even though he has this habit? Not sure if this is like a dumb question but I am curious to know.

Catching up late but totally agree - just saw him live in Houston and have to say the newer songs really grew on me seeing them live, but there was also so clearly a difference in how the crowd is able to engage with his SM tracks and the opportunity those song gave for him to demo his skills and drive the song forward vs. the new songs where it sounds like he’s chasing the song and trying to play catch up with busy lyrics (Which, side note, you HAVE to see him live… he’s unreal)

SM know what they're doing fr!!

a whole week late but i completely agree with your critiques! baekhyuns past 2 albums have just been.. there for me. i think i liked hello world a lot more cuz pineapple slice, woo, truth be told, and cold heart went platinum in my room, and i was REALLY looking forward to this album cuz of that little spoiler he did like a week before the album. the instrumentals sounded so nice, but then i realized all of the songs sounded very similar. it doesnt help that he worked with the same damn 5 producers for literally every song besides black dreams. PLEASE give us bambi back ... it doesnt even have to be a bambi dupe (tho it would work really well either way if it was) but just something more YEARNING cuz i live for yearning music from him.... IF YOU CAN HEAR US BAEKHYUN!!

i always LOVEDDD baeks albums so much like so many songs made it into my favs playlist but the last two albums were honestly so underwhelming for me like the songs sound so similar and they not giving VOCALS vocals either so yeah ://

zuzi

Yeahh he played it soo safee

Koko3op

now i did enjoy this album and did add a few of the songs to my playlist, but i've just been waiting for him to really surprise me and the last two albums just haven't. his voice is truly a gift and i've been hoping for him to just really give me something that i just have to listen to multiple times a day and to really grab me. so far nothing has topped what he gave us in his bambi album (all i got and cry for love, specifically.) hopefully his team finds something that works for him but also can push him to show what we all know he can do. i did enjoy the mujin service because i just like to hear that man sing, but i was also a little disappointed in the song choices. i know that his personal playlist is EXTENSIVE and i feel like he could have picked more sonically interesting songs to sing.

Sigh it was just lackluster for me. Seems like a lot of safe songs, easy listening, nothing new. Baekhyun has a beautiful voice and he seems to take a lot of care when he comes to his singing but I need that push from either his producers or the songs he decides to sing. I feel like he has so much to give or show and he's still suck with the same vibes from Candy. Sir that was 5 years ago nooooooow. At this point, his music peaked at Cry for Love with me although I did enjoy Pineapple Slice for what it was. We need some spice spice spice from this grown man.

pr37

Yeah possibly!

Koko3op

Yeaahhh true!! The change in vibes is step back for sure

Koko3op

Oh wow! That’s such an honour thank you!

Koko3op

Agreed. He mentioned about how he took part in composing and songwriting more this time around so I'm wondering if he's still trying to find his sound as an artist while trying to give his fans the same Baekhyun. I think he definitely needs to step away after tour and maybe play with sounds.

Andrea Avila

I like the album but I agree that it’s very safe and the songs are all very similar in sound. I also was sorta disappointed with his song choices for Lee Mujin service. Overall I did still enjoy both to some extent bc he is my bias but I definitely get it!

Aqsa Hussain

First of all thank u for posting this! and im hoping the upcoming tour will give him more chances to explore his creativity, especially since he seems to be more involved in the album preparations.

Couldn't agree more about the repetitiveness and this not being his best effort overall. And I could already tell from the highlight medley that the songs sounded too similar. The release only confirmed that worry. He's one of my favorite voices ever in the music industry and I just wish he had a team of producers that pushed the envelope more. I wanna go back to the level of Cry For Love and see him being pushed even further. The back and forth in aesthetics between eras lately is puzzling me also. Him giving grown in Pineapple Slice vs. this Candy redo with the youthful vibe (?). Maybe I'm too critical about that aspect and it doesn't matter but yeah idk.

Alexia

I agree. He's one of my favorite singers in kpop and I just haven't been impressed with his last two albums. He can do so much more and like you said, the producers he working with just aren't hittin' it for me. I did, however, enjoy his duet with Jongho on Hello82.

Eb

Yeah I can absolutely understand everything you've mentioned here and in terms of like wanting his artistry to shine more, i definitely agree. I think I am genuinely so biased and looking through rose-tinted glasses anytime I hear him sing on anything cause I could just listen to his voice all day long. But I definitely do see how this wasn't a step forward at all artistically. All I can do is hope for the next comeback to be better! 🤷🏼‍♀️ haha

It's crazy how my taste in music became so refined when I started watching your videos. I mean 3 years ago, I would've loved this album since it's full of really easy listening songs. The problem with Baekhyun is he's more leaning towards korean fans opinions on his songs (which explains the numbers he gets in korea). For me and I think it's safe to say that for almost all international fans, Bambi was his best album by far, the songs there felt complete and unique to what baekhyun is. However, as I said, since k-fans are more on the cutie, danceable side, he doesn't even include songs from Bambi in his tour setlist (apart from the title track and cry for love I think). I won't say I'm disapointed because I honestly wasn't waiting for something different but I just hope we get at least one or two soulfoul songs from him in his next projects.

Aya Saidi

Literally lool. Considering how much music is evolving it's just meh

Koko3op

i couldn’t agree more. this album felt like the production was just like “here, damn🙄” by all means, it isn’t BAD, but it just doesn’t feel like baekhyun.
