IVE I've EMPATHY Album

Firstly these album names are getting a lil tired lol.

BUT on the plus side, though I feel like the QUALITY of music and delivery is still of a high standard I just found the whole experience pretty forgettable.

Especially after an album like the previous one this felt much safer but maybe that's because it's Q1 Idk.

Enjoy!

@micah I think you would like the choreography for TKO which just came out

Ophelia Eyiah

Oooo I hear this. That may have been the better way to do it for sure

lol talking about the cohesion of the album right before clicking play on TKO was funny knowing what was coming. (if you haven't figured it out or been told yet TKO stands for "technical knockout" and is why there's all the boxing references) I also remember during the Switch album time period thinking why are they releasing this in the middle of a world tour. It was a super korean inspired album while also being a different sound for them. I thought they might have been better off playing it safe with an album like this while on tour and then when you get back you can have the more korean album, it can also be the start of a new direction for them. Like Rebel Heart seems like just the kind of song you'd want on a setlist on top of like attitude and probably TKO. But maybe at the end of the day it came down to them wanting to get what they thought were the better songs released first. These aren't that serious of thoughts but found it interesting how basically the exact album I envisioned back then was released in the opposite order

Yesss they do their own style so well!!

I love that IVE have their own style of choreo - for me i would just love if there was more freedom and movement in their hips. Like sometimes they'll do a hip move and im like YES but in the whole thing please! haha But their arm work, how clean it is and how they make it looks so easy is insane TKO is just one of my favourite songs from them period. Oh it has so much potential to be a TT, im kinda sad it was just a b side, but regardless it went straight on my playlist πŸ˜‚ (maybe I can hope for choreo to it.. but i might be reaching with that haha) Kinda sounds a bit like an Aespa song too! Also Heya was just so good - it was one of my top tracks last year, especially going into that last chorus!! (Obligatory thank you Dem Jointz πŸ˜‚)

Oh you ATE!! And yess it kind of makes it feel very empty when the visual isn’t honest to the lyrical message it’s trying to send.

TKO is the best song on the album for me but I agree it doesn’t fit with the album

Definitely also got the "it's safe..." impression, which is exacerbated by the theme writing checks the music, even some of the presentation, cannot cash at all; reducing rebellion to this vague aesthetic, emptying it of any radical content, is such a boring move at this point; I wish these companies came up with something new. I know the team would be up to the challenge, no question. It's even stranger, because 'Heya' works so much better as an anthem for me, and it does so by being more specific, tying it to the imagery of traditional folklore and giving voices room to breathe, so the punch can actually be thrown; it's not subtle either, but it's clear and all the aspects of the song work together. When going for a theme like this, I can't be watching the MV for 'Rebel Heart', and go "oh, so to be a rebel in my heart, I guess I've got to look like an utterly stunning model first, got it." What are you even saying? I also think it lacks the dynamism required to bring home a theme about liberation; for triumph, you need desperation. Puzzling communication all around; their previous work shows they're good at that! I want the production to get much more experimental, to bolster the feeling they're clearly going for. When they sang that line "you will never be never be me" as a tease in the award show, it felt so much more impactful, because the hollow echo in that vast arena provided a story the song in this form is utterly disinterested in telling. That line should have so much more bite than it does. Same thing with 'Attitude'. Why cut Liz's voice to pieces like that when the effect isn't worth it? Why shoot these gorgeous pictures when putting them in sequence accomplishes nothing but looking vaguely pretty and competent. At that point, the production being ""good"" actually annoys me, because of how much time and energy was wasted to say nothing much at all.

my fav song on the album is TKO I hope they promote it

You get it!!

I echo many of the same thoughts as you I think, Switch is a tough act to follow and this felt like more of a return to their previous shenanigans in some ways but I agree that the production has kept a high bar even if I'm not as big a fan of the songwriting this time around. TKO gave me title track energy both with the way it it stands out from the rest and things like shoving a straight up dance break in there and so on, I wonder if it might have been intended to be and then just got discarded because I do feel like it kind of lacks the impact a title track should have. I like both Rebel Heart and Attitude more than that so it was a good choice if that's the case but neither really hold a candle to Heya and Accendio last time around.
