CHRISTMAS SPECIAL Taemin - Intro + Criminal & IDEA (GAYO)

Comments

Hello hello! I agree that the concept of Taemin’s album is hard to express through like a commercialized award show performance and in order to make it a like flashy and good performance and give everyone the choreo they wanted to see, I think the creative team sacrificed some of the visuals that would have helped people who don’t know Korea understand the story. From what I have observed about the lyrics and the behind the scenes, you guys actually hit the nail on the head when you said that the heaven and hell concepts should’ve been switched for the songs; that was hella on purpose lol. Taemin’s production team made the Criminal song (first one with the theme of hell) purposefully a bit smooth and less chants or hardcore beats to sort of go against what you think of when you see chains and whips and black and that kind of bondage dance. It was like the song fit, but was also a littleeee off. And then same on the Idea performance. It’s supposed to be heaven it’s supposed to be harmonic and lovely but then that beat changes and it sort of feels... demonic? This album was all about Taemin going against what people expect him to do with his concepts because he knows he is cleverly constructed doll for his audience, but only a bit because he truthfully doesn’t mind what he chose and his fans want, he just isn’t EXACTLY what everyone thinks he is. I dunno I just thought it was funny that even without the lyrics you all really did kind of guess his intentions pretty well. I enjoyed the reaction!!

Omg, this comment is the best and so true. Most fans think they want honest reactions but they don’t really and also they forget I’m a MASSIVE SHAWOL and Kpop fan myself so I’m also protective of the artists. Tbh they also did like the songs but for different reasons and some liked criminal more and some idea which I thought was great. Thank you so much again for your kind words.

Happy New Year! Please don't be deterred by some of these folks in the comments. I'm of the mind that I need a song and video to hit before I care about lyrics. Especially if it's done in another language. You connect through a music video by sights and sounds the lyrics just deepen the meaning. If the reactors didn't connect then they didn't connect. There is nothing wrong with that. Asking them to read the lyrics beforehand or after won't change their initial impressions. I like that they were honest. So many times Kpop fans say they want honest reactions but it's never really true they usually bully the reactors into saying they like a song when they initially didn't. I've seen it happen. Please don't let them push you around. I'm a HUGE fan of Taemin and I was completely fine with this reaction. I eagerly await for more.

Hey Seven! Thanks for understanding, I really appreciate it! Yeah I actually showed them and they loved it.

Koko3op

I'm just happy when anybody gives Taemin a chance. Thanks for the honest thoughts. Would you consider showing (those who haven't seen it) Taemin's MAMA performance? I feel like the camera angles at MAMA really let the dynamics of the choreography shine better :)

Seven

the performances were pre-recorded due to covid but you can actually hear that taemin wasn't lipsyncing, he just had a backing track which he sang over and one thing taemin does is he isn't afraid to let the people hear the backing track only in some parts of the songs and makes it clearly visible when he's not singing over it. especially at the beginning of criminal(after the intro) you can actually hear him breathing into the mic :)

Bibi pretty much said everything I was thinking to say... 😁

the only thing i would advice, is for brandon to kinda try to get the song even without knowing the lyrics... it's difficult but, in my opinion, you can do it. because title tracks are thought as expressing a concept, so you have more than the lyrics to go off of in order to access that deeper meaning: choreo, stage, clothes, make up, dance points, delivery, all of those things are being thought and executed to expand the literal and metaphorical meaning contained in the lyrics.

also even if he's singing live, these shows always tweak the vocals post production!!! so it indeed doesn't sound like "real" live vocals, and that's not on Taemin but on the show... it's normal that they comment, as in the west they don't tweak as much on live vocals (which sometimes means... horrendous live vocals lol)

Blau 91

i mean, ola has seen the song like what, twice? even though they enjoy a lot of the idols that they see, it doesn't mean that they are fans. so they will approach and review as a casual listener. i think that even if we (as fans) don't always agree with their opinions, they might have valuable insight or comments that we might miss or think differently (as we're more involved. it's like when you ask someone else to review your writing).

Blau 91

(to be honest the whole video I was expecting someone to correct themselves about Taemin not being a strong vocalist) xD

Miki Hoshii

They all have to be pre-recorded because of COVID but pre-recorded doesn't mean lipsyncing. ;-; Sorry if my reaction to this reaction was so strong. I think it was a little knee-jerk of me. I genuinely love all of your content, just for some reason felt a little jaded about this one... there seemed to be so much focus on looking for the negative but no appreciation for anything aside from performance. I think I need to step back and realise not everyone will get Taemin's art straight away, and for the most part, they don't know about the concept behind Criminal / Idea. :p

Miki Hoshii

They’re not Kpop listeners like that so they wouldn’t know it’s any different in the way that I would.

Koko3op

It was our first time doing a group reaction, sorry you’re disappointed but we were just in the moment, it’s nothing personal. I’m a hardcore shawol but it was clearly pre recorded but that doesn’t take anything from the performance.

Koko3op

^^^^^^ This :(

Miki Hoshii

I mean... no one noticed the IDEA soundtrack difference?

Miki Hoshii

Idk, I love all your other reviews but this was...

Miki Hoshii

When his vocals were shining, you guys couldn't even hear him because you were speaking..

Miki Hoshii

He's not lipsyncing, he does have a background track but you can tell when he's not singing. Sigh. You can literally hear when he's not singing..

Miki Hoshii

Love everyone’s discussion and honest opinions so much! Merry Christmas

The thing is that it wasnt supposed to be that different the concept isnt heaven and hell but rather hell in heaven. He said that he wanted to show the nuances of something referring to heaven and how even within that plane of existence not everything is black and white. Like in criminal he is talking about his own alter ego that hurts him (duality within, so it has to be connected only that way an idea of his true identity can be formed) hope that makes sense. So maybe It'd be actually pretty dope to let them read the lyrics first or watch the mvs? Just a suggestion tho love your work and thank you for giving Taemin some exposure ^^
