Introducing Fightcade's Rank Decay

Starting in October 2022 we are adding rank decay to Fightcade's ranking system. Decay will only affect players in S, A and B ranks, lower ranks won't have to worry about it.

Rank decay will be useful to prevent Camping (get a high rank, then never play ranked again) and Farming (play only versus low level players and avoid games with similar rank or higher), and will help balance the points inflation in the Elo pool, caused by alts and smurf accounts.

Players that stay too many days without playing qualifying ranked matches, will have decay set in, causing them to automatically lose a set amount of elo points each day. That doesn't mean you have to play every day: When you reach a rank with decay (S, A, B), you'll be given a number of banked days. At the end of each day if you haven't played a qualifying ranked match, your number of banked days will decrease by one. Once you run out of banked days, you’ll lose elo points instead. After you play a qualifying ranked match, you will get back all your banked days again.

Qualifying matches are finished ranked sets against opponents close to your rank. The number of Elo points you lose if you decay and the number of banked days available differs by rank:

Fightcade will show you an inactivity notification warning in the message of the day after joining a lobby when you have 7 or less banked days left:

Fightcade will also show an inactivity warning in the game's lobby when decay has already set in:

S-ranked players who decay below 1900 Elo points due to inactivity will be placed in A tier. A-ranked players who decay below 1600 Elo points due to inactivity will be placed in B tier. You will never fall below 1300 Elo points (B rank) as a result of decay.

Players who have not played a qualifying ranked match in the last 90 days will not be shown in the ranked leaderboards, this applies to all ranks.

Hey so, anything new in the works? Been a while, would be cool just to get an update of some sort

The problem with rank decay is that it’s not compatible with the kind of system fighting games are built on. Period. ELO was made for chess, not fighters. In chess, you don’t want a grandmaster facing a novice, and when that does happen, upsets like that are punished or rewarded based on expectations - because chess is a slow, analytical game where skill can be predicted through consistency. That logic makes sense there. But fighting games are a different beast. They’re fast, matchup-driven, and momentum-based. A lower-ranked player can take rounds or even matches off a top player purely through character knowledge, reads, counter-picks or just plain luck. That shouldn’t tank the higher player’s score - it should highlight the dynamic nature of the genre. ELO can’t capture that. It punishes volatility in a game that thrives on volatility. Now slap __rank decay__ on top of that broken model and it just gets WORSE. You end up with most players crammed into C and D ranks, while the top barely moves or changes. Those who are A ranked stay A ranked. Those who are B ranked stay B ranked. Etc., etc. The whole ladder loses meaning because it stops reflecting actual *skill* and starts reflecting _activity_. Ranks are supposed to measure progress, NOT attendance. So, now the ranks measure like this: S - The most active player (usually just one or 2 players) A - Extremely active players B - Very active players C - Moderately active players D - Casual players E - People who hardly play at all These decisions feel like they were made without understanding how the playerbase actually engages with fighting games. The result is a system that’s confusing, discouraging, and ultimately meaningless - a ranking system people can’t take seriously because it doesn’t respect how fighting games really work.

If people are cheating, you should probably report them with the username so they can be looked into. FC team has a lot of tools that can detect if someone is indeed cheating or not.

This whole ranking player online is a stupid idea. A lot of players are cheaters and there is no enforcement of any rules. Players can cheat all they want and that is it. Therefore, I suggest players stop playing ranked matches and not even bother with this whole thing.

The main issue I see with ranked play is that there isn't a queue system where you are forced to play random players in a queue. Players will still be incredibly selective with who they fight until then. That being said, a queue system only works with a high enough population so I'd say FC is doing the best they can with the current decay system. Maybe on the massively popular games you can attempt a queue system?

i dont like this change. Ive been focusing on sf6 and now because of that if I stop playing on fightcade ill lose my rank? thats kinda dumb ngl

So maybe I don't want to play ranked because....: -I don't accept challenges especially from 200 ms opponent's ping. -I'm tired from ranked and pick top tiers to fight against other top tiers. Losing a ranked match because I was trying to chill with Ryu forces me to pick Chun-Li again and again ?
