I also found out that Souchi actually has actually two volumes of manga dedicated to his story. And the episode here just shows 1 chapter from the second volume which would explain why it seems so random with 0 character development.

I only read a bit out of morbid curiosity as I tend to find a lot of it too far on the scale of disturbing content. The anime episodes I've seen so far are milder and feel safer(?). Wonder if that's why they picked those ones to animate?

2022-11-11 16:07:47 +0000 UTCWith Junji Ito, I don't think these episodes are a great reflection of his work overall. I tend to find his work less scary, and more disturbing. It feels like he sets a challenge with every story to make the reader as uncomfortable as possible.
