Those hydrogen balloons made me laugh. They're all over China and explosions are frequent. Helium is far too expensive for party balloons these days. Hydrogen is easy to get as water is just H2O an electrolysis chamber will turn water into hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen doesn't spontaneously catch fire, it needs an ignition source to give it enough energy to bind with the oxygen in the air, that in turn is an exothermic reaction and explains the chain reaction.

2025-02-11 20:15:35 +0000 UTCAnd look at a periodic table. The stuff at the right extrem is called nobel gasses meaning they don't react with anything. The are the cool kids that everyone want to be. Helium it the lightest of those elements. SO of cause not flammable. The stuff on the left and second on the from the right is the stuff that really make stuff happen. Hydrogen being the lightest of all on the top left followed by Lithium the stuff in the exploding batteries. Nasty stuff like fluorine and chlorine second from the right.

2025-02-11 20:05:30 +0000 UTCDo you know you have had this exact discussion in Xiaban hou before about what you put in ballons. If you want them to fly it is Helium if you want it safe 160grams/m3 if you don't care or are put under sanctions bu the US as the Germans was with the Hindenburg you put hydrogen 80g/m3 flying even better but unsafe as hell. Methane is like 700g/m3 so i guess it would fly in a big balloon as air is like 1300g/m3. Butan however is 2400g/m3 and would drop the balloon to the floor. Sorry for the rant but sometimes i feel like i was the only one conscious on the physics lessons. OK, i am an engineer but in electronics. Don't know if i must state the obvious, that gases behave like things floating in water. If the push away more weight then they weigh they float or in the case of ballons fly. Acemedes principle. Maybe physicists should start streaking again so people remember a bit better.

Also if you remember the film Kiss of the Dragon with Jet Li, there's a scene where the damsel in distress bumps into Jet Li in a Chinese restaurant and asks for those puffy chip things.
