Xiàbān Hòu! - Episode #67 - Brutal Schools - The Chinese Education System

Today we will talk about the brutality of the education system in China.

In China, there is so much pressure, but the nationalism is being introduced in the classrooms that is reminiscent of what happened in Germany.

Q: What's TV like in China? How many channels does the average Chinese person have access to?

Hi guys I’m new here. I’ve been watching the YouTube channel for three years and I wanted to join the Patreon for the longest time. And I have now. I was wondering where I could get the Discord invite.

Q: Thanks for turning me to The Aquarium Guy's podcast. I've been listening to it a lot! Can I get a "hong hong" directed at Winston? Thanks! Peace and love

Q: how did you guys deal with the whole "要喝热水/多喝热水“ thing? also i haven't been able to catch you live recently, as i was hanging out by the port of Dandong, trying to catch some "wHitE tAiL DeEr" but then i met a gnome named willy and when i said hello, the only thing he said was "HONG HONG HONG", but luckily he retracted it.

I got paddled in the early 80s in a mid-Atlantic state, so what is this 50s and 60s nonsense C-Milk?

I've mentioned before that I had an exchange student from Hengyang in Hunan. Had him in my first year engineering design class back in 2018. He was at the point where he had to go back to take the Gaokao before the end of our school year. He desperately wanted to do well on it (somehow without studying a lick) so he could qualify to come back to the U.S. to attend an unspecified university. Family definitely had money. I don't know if he was an average 16/17-year-old rich kid from a large city, but he seemed to expect a free ride. I'd coincidentally started studying Mandarin the week before he arrived. He thought that was pretty cool. Total coincidence. I didn't know he was coming until the day before he showed up. Anyway, I observed some things that make me think he never got through the Gaokao without a pile of RMB going into a few hands. First of all, his English was rubbish. I helped him as much as I could but he preferred using an app on his phone to actually trying to expand his understanding. In fact, he paid very little attention during lectures and demonstrations of the CAD software he was supposed to be learning. You could easily follow 90% of the demos with earplugs in. But not if your face is buried in your phone on Chinese websites. Living on his phone and doing as little as possible on his own seemed to be the norm in all his classes. My class was the one where rote memorization wouldn't get a passing grade. He had to learn HOW to do things and produce products to be graded. That hurt his feelings. To his credit, he did get into this new way of doing things and learned quite a bit. Not so much in his other classes, but none of his other teachers really worked with him. Too bad. Also too bad that he almost certainly never made it back to school in the U.S. He asked what he should do to qualify to get back here. I told him in my relatively new and very primitive Mandarin that he needed to study and learn English without having to rely on his cellphone app. That would be like rewriting his DNA. I liked the kid, but he was very handicapped by the education system he'd grown up in.
