Super Mario Kart Part 1 is Done!
Tuesday evening, I finished up Part 1 of the Super Mario Kart video! Everything looks and sounds great, and I found some great background music as well. Overall, I'm really happy with this edit.
Out of curiosity, I decided to keep track of the hours it took to edit Part 1. In total, it took 20 hours of solid work to finish. By solid work, I mean no distractions: This was me sitting in front of Adobe Premiere, editing.

Part 1 is roughly 10 minutes long. So that means it takes about 2 hours of editing for 1 minute of video. Interesting stuff! The Part 2 section is probably about 22 minutes long, so I can expect 40-45 solid hours of editing before it is done.
Mario Movie Trailer Thoughts
On October 6th, Illumination and Universal released a teaser trailer for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie. I thought I'd share my initial thoughts and would love to hear your opinion in the comments below.
- I love the animation. Everything looks great and feels like it is from the Mario universe.
- Bowser's voice is SO GOOD. I actually forgot who was playing the role, and it is Jack Black! He nailed the voice.
- Chris Pratt's voice is....well I will wait to reserve judgement. But it basically sounded like himself? I thought for sure he would add a NY accent to the character. You hear it a little bit near the end, but not much. Obviously Mario doesn't talk much in this teaser, so we will wait and see.
Overall, I'm looking forward to seeing this movie and I think it is going to be absolutely bonkers huge at the box office.
Re-Recording Narration

I finished Part 1 of the Super Mario Kart video on Tuesday evening. So on Wednesday, my next step was to record the narration for Part 2. I like to split up my recording sessions because it is a lot of talking, and my voice tires out after awhile.
After my recording session, I started editing Part 2. But during my edit, I felt like my narration was off. I just sounded tired and somewhat hushed. I chalked it up to my timing. I recorded Part 2 midday, and I usually don't do that. I've said it before, but I like to record narration at night because it is quiet. So I think by recording during the day, it threw me off.
I once heard advice that you should treat your voice like an instrument, and it's 100% true. The day of the re-recording, I drank tons of water and avoided sugary foods that could make my mouth sound mushy (I know, it's gross). On Thursday night, I stayed up late, had a cup of tea, and re-recorded. It sounds so much better!
On Friday, I went back and replaced my old narration files and kept editing Part 2. I made these cool little animations for showing racer stats (see above). I'd say Part 2 is about...15% done?
Next week is a short one - I'm traveling to Portland for the Portland Retro Gaming Expo on Friday. Anyone else going to be there?
Have a great weekend!
- Norman
