Weekly Blog - Behind the Scenes of B-roll! (07/12/2020)
Added 2020-07-12 17:36:17 +0000 UTCHi Patrons! This week I've been continuing work on the Mario Paint video. Things are coming along nicely and I still expect it to come out later this month. For the weekly blog, I thought I would tell you a little more about my b-roll shots!

(Can you find Kiki the Cat in this picture?)
What is B-roll?
In short, B-roll is supplemental or alternative footage. For example, let's say I have a line in my narration like "Mario Paint was released in August of 1992." Ideally I could get archival footage of Mario Paint being released in stores in August of 1992. But if I can't get that, I shoot B-roll as an alternative to give myself some flexibility during editing.
I LOVE shooting B-roll. You can get very creative with it and it adds some polish to your video. I have a small room in my house dedicated to only B-roll. I've got an assortment of lights, cameras, props, equipment and more to help out.
In the picture above, I wanted to give a look of a kids room with a desk and Mario Paint. It turned into this shot.

B-roll does take a little more time than just showing an image from the internet, but I think it's worth it.
I'm hoping that by next week, I have a rough draft of the video for you all to view. See you next time!
