[Full Album] A WILHELM SCREAM | "Career Suicide"

Well...third time's the charm?! After its third chance on a poll, A Wilhelm Scream's Career Suicide finally won, and only by 9 votes!

What's crazy about this album is the immense musical overlap with so many technical metal albums I grew up listening to, but it seems to hail from a completely different music scene. It's really odd to think about. All my (best) friends (are metalheads) are going to love this album when they hear it, I guarantee it.

If you ask me, every freakin' bass player should hear this album. Brian Robinson turned on the hot-water faucet and let it run full bore until "We Built This City! (On Debts and Booze)" finally faded into nothingness.

Comments

that 3-3-3-3-2-2 pattern is something I picked up a lot from the drummer too in a couple grooves, being a drummer by trade. Built this city on debts and booze is a ton of fun to play imo. this album is the one that got me to sign up for this patreon

Matt

This is what made me take the jump to the patreon. A Wilhelm Scream changed my entire vision of what punk could be. As I got better at guitar and bass I was getting tired of even descendants riffs. I was like “they’re the best, so what’s next? Is there anything left?” Then bam, Wilhelm. An amazing album and pure joy watching other people discover and appreciate it.

Bonsai Pop

This goes for all your vids but I tend to watch the ones I know, and you bring a whole new layer of appreciation to my favourite tunes and in this case, whole albums. AWS are such a special band and this album is a masterpiece IMO and I loved seeing your appreciation of it

Brendan Kennedy

new here! glad you got to this one! AWS is one of my favorite bands and seeing them live is always a treat. hope you have the chance to see them someday!

That Guy in the Pit

There’s a reason why Propagandhi and A Wilhelm Scream are my 2 favorite punk bands.

Ronnie Thornley

Love AWS, but nothing has matched Career Suicide. It’s the only album that’s perfect front to back.

Ronnie Thornley

This album was my life for many years. Listening to this again just brings back all sorts of emotions and memories, smells, people, events, really nostalgic.

Ronnie Thornley

It sounds like a punk band plucked a fantastic bassist right from a math-rock band and plugged him straight in. Really fun album which I enjoyed a lot!

Kriss Watt

I don't know if they ever toured with Propagandhi. but they have both recorded with Bill Stevenson. Probably the two most talented bands to grace the blasting room

uncle patsy

the genius of i wipe my ass with showbiz is that the lyrics read "verse chorus verse chorus the solo then *boom*" and that's literally how the song goes :-D

Matt Conte

Third time Ive watched this. 😋🧨😎

Papa Shango

A slower AWS song that I can’t get enough of is Figure Eights In My Head. It’s off their latest album Lose Your Delusion. As corny as it sounds, there’s something musically about it that makes my soul feel good when I hear it.

Courtney

"My face is sore, I've smiled a lot" has to be one of the best compliments I've heard about an album review!

Mitch Moar

Finally had time to watch this one. Excellent band, incredible bassplayer, fantastic reaction.

Daniel Karlsson

I listened to this album on repeat for a MONTH when it came out, so it was pretty incredible watching someone hear it for the first time. So thanks for that lol. If you want another melodic hardcore album where all the instrumentals are CONSTANTLY changing what they're doing, check out With Honor - Heart Means Everything. You can listen to it 100 times and still pick out new things the instrumentals are doing. I've been listening to hardcore since I was 17, and it's pretty much all I listen to at 39 because everything else just sounds overly simple. Enjoy!

Shaun McCarthy

Sorry, it's just me. Check out George Hrab. He was the drummer for Philadelphia Funk Authority for 25 years; and he plays guitar and bass and piano and sings and writes and records his own music. But, he also has a series where he learns and plays the music that influenced him. It started during the pandemic and is called simply: 13 songs (well, it became 7 songs when the world started functioning again). Exactly what you were talking about in the middle of Debts and Booze. Do it, PLEASE do it, I'll watch every video. Sure others would join in.

EvertheHumanist

I saw these guys on a dark and stormy night in San Antonio TX around 2009 2010 ish, Just after Propagandhi's Supporting Caste album came out. The weather was SO bad the crowd was like 20 people in a tiny club south of downtown. After their set I bought them a round of Lone Star beers and helped them break down and pack up. The rain was so bad there was flooding and the bar let us stay till like 4 am because no one could get out of the parking lot. So we sat and drank and talked about the Supporting Caste album and Nuno specifically said Propagandhi had a huge influence on AWS as well as Iron Maiden, Yes, King Crimson, and a slew of other punk and metal. I love these guys. Really love that you found them. I introduced many friends and acquaintances to AWS. They all fell in love too.

EvertheHumanist

Saw these guys this summer. Such an amazing live show

kreviss jurjesss

haha I do love flatliners!, haha can you tell me why?

Papa Shango

my friend I cant tell you how happy this has made me, You know no body gives punk a fair shake and its so refreshing to have someone who really understands music break it down for us. I've been screaming for more coverage of Wilhelm and I am so happy you love Brians work. I laughed and cried and loved every minute of this it was better than christmas. Thank you! from way back in 2006 when I first heard “The kids can eat a bag of dicks” I knew these guys were special and they are, and have been, work horses playing tiny clubs for probably not a lot of money, but theyre still around, (relatively) unkown legends. Thank you again it truly has nourished my soul. (I also vote against the mustard drinking) Post Script I love lyrics. because in part to Fat Mike, who has also said the hardest part of writing music is writing lyrics. And everytime I hear or do listen to the lyrics by a wilhelm they are fantastic. all of this being said I have myself just like yourself been so caught up in the listening to the music for almost 20 years now and still don't know the all of the lyrics. I saw a lot of their lyrics for the first time on this video. Also I highly recommend Partycrasher

Papa Shango

Partycrasher is amazing! Totally agree - the musicianship is crazy good! The song they released from that era “swallowed the sea” is also a solid track.

Mac Thompson

I got into AWS when Mute Print came out. Changed my mindset of Punk Rock being straight forward. Love the breaks. Stops starts and everything in between.

Ben Romain

…and, loved the fade out on the fade out!

Trevor Kelly

Great video Mark! That was a lot of fun. I didn’t really get into the late 2000’s/2010’s bands (too much whining!). But this was fun! Every time you went for a drink, I thought, “Oh no! He’s going to chug some mustard!”

Trevor Kelly

Great video. Brian was definitely influenced by Karl Alvarez at some point in his life, last time I saw AWS play live, he sound checked with various Descendents bass riffs.

Gav Chap

If you want a more dynamic AWS, their next record "Partycrasher" is definitely worth a listen. It will probably never win a vote because it's just not as popular as Career Suicide so you'd just have to make an executive decision if you wanted to do an album reaction of it. Totally worth it even if you don't want to make a video out of it. Hard to really recommend one single song from it. Great playing across the whole thing.

eljefebezos

Enjoyed this episode. Such an awesome live band to see. Was working in an underground mine when this album came out. Use to blast it in the truck on the way down.

Steve Duff

This came in perfect timing. Going to see them with Face to Face, next week in Santiago

Nicolas Bonati

Our Ghosts- in my opinion is about him dealing with a close ones drug addiction. You don't deal with the person in drug addiction you deal with ghosts or demons one has within themselves and it's not just their addiction either it's yours as well that's why he saying working out contingents with your ghosts. He s fighting for his friends life and doing anything to save him/her and sadly it's such a losing battle but would lose every fight I could if it meant eventually being able to break the what's damn near unbreakable cause it gives a person everything they need at the moment without anyheadaches, stress, and it feels like love except its a mirage.

Jonah LeFever

Glad you got to listen to Jaws 3 people 0! Can you add Pennywise - Full Circle to your list for full albums reviews!

Jake Ryan

Fucking epic. Yeah, man, now that you've gotten into Propagandhi and now Wilhelm, you're going down the prog punk rabbit hole. Next, do some Flatliners. Come on y'all, I know those of you who like Prop and Wilhelm are also listening to Flatliners. Let's turn Mark on to them too.

Bryan Be Real

so crazy seeing you identify with my lane, which is like... so specific and very hard to put in a box, cheers to us

Dan P

Just finished the play through. This album rules so much. Glad you got around to it. You should check out their newest album as well, lose your delusion. They’ve referred to it a Wilhelm sampler as it’s got a bit of everything of their style. Trevor said when he was writing and recording it he wanted it to feel like a 90s rock album. Songs like figure 8s in my head give a good break to some of the faster songs.

Brad Clarke

Brian Robinson is the Canadian sensation. I still remember having to get this album special order at the local cd place when it came out. This first song melted my face when I got into the car.

Brad Clarke

Like I said, cover the album and I’ll join up. Here I am.

Brad Clarke

So many observations and comments I want to make so far but just hearing you react to jaws with all the compartmentalizing, comparison, pure joy ect is 5 minutes of gold that made my night. Perfectly summarizes why you’re so good at these and why this music is so fucking awesome and most importantly why it’s so fun to watch you go on this ride finding out what we’ve known along 😂. Just a beauty🤘

Chris

Propagandhi is a huge influence on Wilhelm, btw. Nice job catching that! To your point too of the blended vocals you picked out on Get Mad, that’s Nuno (the gruffer voice and their main singer) and lead guitarist/songwriter Trevor harmonizing. They do that quite a bit and man, their voices go so nicely together

lostmotel

I think I saw them on this tour too. Was the Lawrence arms also on this tour?

ryan mcgrath

For more Brian, before AWS, check out The Fullblast - Short Controlled Bursts.

ryan mcgrath

Fuck yeah, so happy you finally got to listen to this one. Hazy memory on some of these, but I'm pretty sure Cold Slither is about their former touring bassist that quit the band and left in the middle of a tour Pardon Me is about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney Ruiner is my favorite album of theirs. It's a little more dynamic in terms of having slower songs, but it's also lacking Brian Robinson. I'm hoping I can get The King is Dead through the November request room

Burns

A good closing song is like a movie with a satisfying ending. It ties up the (musical) narrative and releases you back out into the world.

ryan mcgrath

Also 1 final thing, If ya remember a while back I suggested you and Michael Palmisano both react to we built this city because of how fucking disgusting BOTH guitar and bass work are on it. Since he's not in the punk vein, I bet hes never heard punk guitarists do the kind of work these guys do.

Hans

Good pick up. AWS are Propagandhi fans.

Ngb Bng

Legitimately from the moment you had said you grew through the metal and prog scene, THIS was the band I was like HE HAS TO HEAR! Every metalhead I've ever known, especially the ones who shit on punk musicians, I show them this and their minds are fucking fried, like they cant comprehend that a band in the punk scene pushes the limit musically as hard as they do. Absolute fucking monsters. Lyrically I'd say I know its a common thing for Reilly (rhythm guitar and lyricist on the songs), when he refers to "City" he's typically speaking about his body, or a body of someone, generally the whole of a person, so "we built this city on debts and booze", talking about his life is built on debts and booze. Its something I realized on an old song "the king is dead" cuzz he'd say "The city dies tonight", which is about a friend who committed suicide.

Hans

Oh wow, what was his reaction? Haha.

Mark Michell

Hope you enjoy it, I sure as heck did! I feel like everything I've heard Bill involved with has sonically sounded killer the more I think back to recent episodes/videos.

Mark Michell

Yes, absolutely planning to make that happen in the somewhat-near future when time allows. Excited about the idea!

Mark Michell

It’s been a long time since I listened to this. I forgot how much I liked it.

Joe Miller

1. Tell Brian he needs his own bass channel like Matt Freeman. 2. Have you ever thought of incorporating interviews with bass player talking about their albums or techniques or anything like that? Lot of them in the punk rock scene I’m sure would love to chat and if you put a bit of work in I’m sure you can get some of your personal favorite down the line! Just a thought!

Jeff Harstead

A Wilhelm Scream were one of the first bands I ever left the country to go see (supporting Lagwagon in London many years ago in 2006). One of my favourite shows I've ever been to was A Wilhelm Scream supported by No Trigger, you know it was that kind of show where every person in the crowd knows every word and they're so excited the bands actually came to their town halfway around the world that the energy is through the roof. Career Suicide is a great album, but I think the previous album Ruiner is really something extra special. The emo and post hardcore elements they mentioned dropping I think actually made their sound even more interesting. You said about Career Suicide not having any catch your breath moments, but Ruiner has those with songs like "In Vino Veritas II" and "Mercy Day For Mr. Vengeance" with those lush harmonies that are some of my favourites on the record.

Garry Lee

You're dead on with the gruff vocals and the clean harmonies! Big reason I love Wilhelm, NOFX, and strung out.

J Reid

Also side notes, sometimes the bass just rides the roots because he also sings backups, gotta be able to pull that shit live you know :P

Mickael noel

Glad you liked it! All albums are great but the more they put out the better they get. They have a 5 song self titled EP that’s be a good bonus video, but hopefully you’ll get to Partycrasher and lose your delusion eventually. (All featuring Brian)

Jeff Harstead

Love this album.

Peter Del Villano

haha you could do a another video breaking it down after a few listens because there's so much going on, such an epic record

Mickael noel

Just saw them again at the Fest in Gainesville this past weekend. They played at 1:00 AM to a crowd of 30, 40, and 50 year olds, and it STILL was one of wildest shows I’ve ever seen in my life. And now I get this? Hell of a week!

Sean Hanrahan

I cannot wait to dive into this! I’m sure you’ll breathe new life into an album that I’ve probably literally heard 100 or more times and get me listening to it in new ways moving forward. Also can’t understate just how important doing this album with Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore at The Blasting Room was for Wilhelm. They were already a great band, but Bill helped hone them while also turning them up to 11

lostmotel

Was listening to an old Howard Stern show a few days ago and they were going through music sent in from listeners. Someone from the band's mom (I think) sent in Wilhelm Scream.
