Kendrick Used THIS Sample! | Reacting to Marvin & Tammi + Luther & Cheryl – If This World Were Mine

There’s a Mariah and Mutha Patti performance of Got To Be Real that I highly recommend checking out. The highlight is Patti and Mariah doing an insane high note together. They did it so crispy and seamless that if you don’t know anything about vocals you miss out on that truly genius moment.

When I bought Beyoncé’s first album and turned the case over and discovered that she and Luther did a cover of The Closer I Get To You, I literally gasped and immediately began ripping the plastic off. 😂 I usually just listen to a new album from beginning to end, but not this time. I popped the cd in and went straight to The Closed I Get To You. BABYYYYYYY they did not disappoint!!!! Bey and Luther tore that song/them vocals UP!! 🙌🏽

Just checked it out, so pretty, I love the airy atmosphere (Kai)

I suggest a theme of just Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye. They had entire albums together. Also something cool: How Can I Ease the Pain by Lisa Fisher …Luther Vandross’ back up singer.

Jasmine Felton

Can you do American Requiiem by Beyoncé? It’s so beautiful!

Kourtney Dortch

Marvin actually passed in 1984. I remember that because I was a junior in high school and when it was announced on the radio, we thought it was a bad April Fools Day joke.

Caeldo

Luther actually wrote a lot of his songs; by himself and sometimes with a collaborator. I think people feel that way because the radio stations gave more play time to his remakes because of the familiarity.

Caeldo

It never occured to me that the same Cheryl Lynn that duets with Luther is the same Cheryl Lynn that sings Got To Be Real.

Ok, my last comment, promise…but since y’all are on Marvin and Tami, you should listen to their song, You’re All I Need to Get By…then go listen to Method Man and Mary J Blige’s version called I’ll Be There for You/Youre All I Need. Or Kai, you could go ahead and bring back the “original song/remake/sample” theme week for an upcoming People’s Choice. 🫣 😇 😎 This video was such a great surprise! I really enjoyed it! 👏🏾

Damn, y’all are taking me back to listening to the Quiet Storm on the radio late at night in the 80s & 90s! Oh, and Luther’s voice could never be sugary, it’s SMOOTH like molasses!!!

Jen M

What’s the incident? Spill the ☕️!!!

Jen M

The more yall cover Luther, the more I realize nothing he did was original. He just made songs better! 🤣

Jen M

I think before there was The Gong Show, there was Amateur Night at the Apollo. Just saying. 😊 #thesandman

Jen M

LOVE that you guys did this, after 'the incident'. lol 🤗💖👍🏽 Respect!

This was simply wonderful-you both should dive head first into some Marvin Gaye music! His body of work is what masterpieces are made of— He by far, truly set a tone for modern day R+B music. You and dad both mentioned he had mostly upbeat music. But his later work really has some deep emotional layers to it. From him talking about the estate of affairs in the world (which can ring true even today) to him dedicating a whole album to an ex- wife…. His music can bring tears of sadness and happiness to just about anyone. Two of my favorite songs of his are: Distant Lover and If I should die tonight.

Thank you for this. Luther is hands down my favorite male vocalist. There was always a running joke about who you'd love more, little Luther or big Luther based on his struggles with his weight. If I had no choice but to choose it would be Big Luther for me. Although truthfully he sounded the same either way. I also love Marvin Gaye's version, but vocally in this song I'd choose the Luther version. Marvin's catalog is actually sublime and stellar. The women, Tammy and Cheryl, both have similar vocal ranges. Tammy was unfortunately died at 24 due to brain cancer. Gone way too soon. She also had a very high profile romance with David Ruffin from The Temptations abused her before she left the relationship.

That's exactly the feeling Kai and I both get, too!

Please react to Luther -Make Me A Believer. Pure eargasm

So, that said, was my research, considering I've never heard Cheryl or the tracks before, sufficient?

The FrontRoom

Fun fact (for me): Cheryl Lynn was my 1st autograph! Newark Symphony Hall circa 1979. I got to sit on her lap & take a Polaroid picture with her that she signed right after! I studied her signature and modeled my cursive L after hers! (I went by Lisa then and I still make them the same way to this day! 🥰)

Felicia Wiggins

This was such a great surprise…thank you both for reviewing these hits!!! 🫶🏽

Adrienne

Still get goosebumps listening to Luther.

Linda Walker

So nice to see you dive into Cheryl Lynn she is one of my absolute faves! When I'm moving slow in the morning her music lifts my spirits and gets me going.

Kim P

Thank you so much ,this is definitely my era ,my favorite artist, still listening to these songs til this day.

Linda Walker

The fact that y'all both knew there song, but didn't know it was Cheryl is kind cool. Like the both of y'all got a feeling of nostalgia. Not related to the song, but I when I was in AIT in the army this one platoon sargent would only call the "boogie woogie" cadence when we had to march. Dad saying boogie just made me think about that.

When you do the classics ... bullshit doesn't work. So you do have to study a bit, if you're not just gonna talk about 'the music' ... you can't know the mechanics of the period or history of the SINGLES that were released and promoted versus the album cuts that were recorded as 'fillers' often, and not singles. ALSO, the power of the publishers promoted some writers over others, so it wasn't always the artist, but the writers of specific tunes, that created the buzz.

Brother EDEN Douglas

I really appreciated this one. One, because I love Luther but also the way you took the time to dive in a little bit on their stories. I realize you don't have time to do that most of the time but I enjoyed it.

jeff baker

Awww! What a sweet listening session. Thanks Kai and Dad, for the care and consideration you gave these beloved artists and tracks.

Brenda T.

Luther Vandross really is the greatest of all time..

Marco

One of my favorite Luther songs! He had such a gift in that his singing can make you feel like he has loved more deeply than any other person who has expressed romantic love for a significant other.
