Wow, Haley, thanks so much! We do hope to get down to New Orleans one day. Such a unique and vibrant place, from all accounts. I know the Black Star album is on Kai’s list of LP’s to cover. What a unique talent Mos Def is. His concert just as we expected in way - warm vibes and down to earth. And to top it off he walked onto the stage with music from Hendrix’s first album playing! Hi!! I just wanted to say hey to you guys and that my hubs and I absolutely love y’all. We’re both lifelong hip-hop heads and your relationship is just wonderful. I hope you enjoyed the Andre show!
I saw that you guys went to see Mos Def, but I’m not sure if you’ve covered the Black Star album. If not, I think that would be a great one to cover beginning to end. We saw them last year at Mahalia Jackson theater and they were amazing.
Sending out lots of love from New Orleans. If you’re ever in town, hit us up and we’ll show you around.
Signed, an ER doc who loves HipHop and can talk about it forever🩵 (504)-919-1027

Great reaction per usual. I didn’t immediately catch all the references at first, had to watch it a few times and hear some stuff on social media too…but it was the most fun I’ve ever seen someone have with a diss track. The whole video just seems happy and unbothered! A vibe! The dancing was phenomenal.
I do love the part where Kendrick gets more intense after saying, “imma send it up to Pac!” Def my fav part of the song.
My fav part of the video is the krumping dancing when he starts talking about how Drake used the rappers in Atlanta for his own gain (Future, 2 chainz, etc.) that was such a great part! Also, it was fun to see Whitney and the fam! ❤️

Thanks guys. You guys should check out the Popup concert at least Kendricks set. It was seriously like the nail in Drake's coffin. Especially the ending.

Yay! LA Native here! Yes, we're still partying lol. Okay so here are all the Easter eggs people pointed out:
- Video was filmed at the Compton Courthouse. Many speculate that Kendrick is going to jury duty.
- Tommy the Clown is a legend in Los Angeles. He steers the youth away from violence. Most famous for a dance called "Krumping". Check out the documentary called "Rize". It's super dope!
- The guy wearing he ski mask that gets yanked away they're saying that's Drake lol. The all black outfit / scene is referencing Drake's dark lane demo tapes.
- Kendrick does 17 push ups because Drake likes under 18 (LOL!) Absolutely hilarious.
- The owl pinata - 1) OVO reference. 2) Kid's game. 3) Notice that trash falls out when Kendrick cracks it open 🤣
- Kendrick while saying "A minor" playing hopscotch, a kids game. People said he skipped over the 6 😂🤣
- Mustard, the song producer, is wearing a Toronto Blue Jays hat
- Shipping containers - reference to human trafficking.
- Demar Derozen used to play for Toronto Raptors. Also was a close friend of Drake. There's an interview floating around where Derozen says how Drake is "his brother." Not sure what happened, but he has obviously turned on him.
- Girl dancing on tightrope. Drake needs to watch his step. Birds like to perch on electric wires. Maybe another owl reference. Some think the imagery I linked to his "Nothing Was the Same" album cover.
- Whitney and kids featured to prove they're all good between them. She proceeds to "blood walk" while wearing a "wife beater." The shirt got the name because on the TV show "COPS" the men who usually got arrested were wearing that sleeveless undershirt.
- People found out that Kendrick was shooting the video, and they just showed up. All those people singing is organic.
-The owl at the end of the video is brown and white. Owl's perspective = not in cage. Only for the camera to pan out and he's in a cage. Some people connect this image to "I know why the caged bird sings"

Everyone has explained Tommy the Clown. I’ll just add his dance movement gave the kids an outlet to steer them away from the streets. I love how they were highlighted throughout the video . DJ Mustard said in an interview that he has been trying to get a placement with Kendrick for years. At one point he would send him 5 beats a day. Consistency led him to his biggest hit. Besides the owl being the symbol Drake uses, its significant because owls are predators that depend on other animals for food. Aligns with Kendrick’s point of Drake being a culture vulture and his alleged predatory behavior. The highlight of the video for me was the appearance of Kendrick's family. Thanks for the reaction.

Hey guys great reaction. I think he was strategic with the timing of the video. He had a concert on June 19th, which is Juneteenth. Juneteenth is the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas two years after slavery ended. And then he released the video on the 4th of July which is Independence Day for the U.S.

I came to the comments to talk about Tommy The Clown but so proud to be amongst true culture lovers that beat me to the punch. This is a moment in history that will be spoken and written about for many many years to come. We have to remember that hiphop is still relatively new. Most of the creators of the genre are still living. This is absolutely the most deliberate battle we've seen in hip hop. So glad that it's ending in a joyous song and not bloodshed like past battles we could compare. <3

The clown in the video is “Tommy The Clown”. He’s a big entertainer in LA and has his own “krumping” dance crew (the people who have their faces painted) which is a style of dancing in LA that you see throughout the video. They do a lot of birthday parties and other community events. The whole video is a nod to LA and their culture. Tommy the clown became more known when he released the documentary “Rize” which showcased the underworld of Krumping in 2005!

That's Tommy the Clown. He's an L.A. legend! He invented a dance style called clowning in the 90's that evolved into what's now known as krumping. If ya'll are interested, there's a documentary about it called Rize.
