"Dear Lover" and "out on a Limb" by Teena Marie are a few of my favorites. She was a wonderful lyricist who gave so much imagery with her music. Very talented. RIP 🖤

Been listening to Teena Marie from 8-Tracks to streaming!! She is phenomenal, RIP Teena!!❤️

Desertbutterfly78

This is the sound Silk Sonic was imitating with their recent album.

Joylynn06

Square Biz is such an amazing song. Definitely one of my favorites from that era

SlumpJones

GREAT JOB GUYS! 90'S HIP HOP REMIXES SUGGESTIONS: CRAIG MACK- "FLAVOR IN YOUR EAR" ORIGINAL & REMIX FEATURING BIGGIE, L.L. COOL J., BUSTA RHYMES & RAMPAGE. YOU JUST GOT TO DO THE VIDEO FOR THE REMIX. THE NEXT SUGGESTION: A TRIBE CALLED QUEST- "SCENARIO" ORIGINAL & REMIX. BOTH VERSIONS FEATURE BUSTA RHYMES, CHARLIE BROWN & DINCO D BUT IT FEATURED A NEW ARTIST BY THE NAME OF "HOOD" (THAT PASSED AWAY BEFORE HE HAD A CHANCE TO ENJOY THE FRUITS OF HIS LABOR), DIFFERENT LYRICS & PRODUCTION.

KAZBAAH

Fun fact! Not sure you all know but many African-Americans did not know Tina Marie was white until she did an appearance on SOUL TRAIN - the legendary dance and performance show.

LaToya Ma’at

Also happy would be a great choice

Jamil King

Rick James and Teena Marie each have amazing individual discographies that you’d both love.

BigHomie_Ant

One of the greatest duets of all time. This song brings back so many memories

BigHomie_Ant

Teena Marie was THE songstress! She could sing absolutely anything and make it sound amazing. Check out "Square Biz" or "Out on a Limb". One is fast-paced & upbeat. The other is slower like "Fire & Desire". Both are unforgettable.

Tina E

A masterpiece ✨️

Lady T, Teena Marie, is one of my fav artists. She’s great. The R&B era of 1975-1985 I call the “Quiet Storm” era. Those songs used to play at night after 9/10pm on Black Radio stations, to unwind, relax, be with ur boo, cry over the one u can’t be with type of soul music. Rick James is a great artist

Simira

Thanks for joining, Dewayne, and for the rec! - dad

Dewayne Williams

I just thought of another song you guys would enjoy the "passion" in. Lenny Williams - Cause I love you 😍

Tonya G

Kai just made me laugh out loud "were people more passionate about things back then or something?" 😆 🤣 😂 LOVE IT!!

Tnulb

Hold up, Teena Marie is white?! Would never have thunk it! Blue-eyed soul indeed :) - dad

The FrontRoom

Im cracking up at Kai asking were they more passionate back then. Lol. When I was in high school, this was the music I preferred to listen to, stuff for the real lovers and my mom said I was so old. Great video guys. Teena Marie was really something special. So many suggestions for her, Portuguese Love is a classic and has been sampled by others Rick James and Smokie Robinson also have a lover song too called Ebony Eyes

Storm

YESSSSS!!!

Felicia Wiggins

Classic scene.

Storm

My favorite Teena Marie song is Lover Girl.

Veronica Estrell

Such a classic. I can't think of anyone Lady T sounds like. Here's the link to Martin and Gina's version. https://youtu.be/fxJaXgiaAyE?si=e2psfNktQHruR3IT

Tina Marie Please- Deja Vu, Square Biz

MrsbullRhine Rhine

Yes, do Teena Marie's Square Biz & Lovergirl. She also plays instruments. I believe Rick James started in a punk band. He's very versatile.

ProRenae

Putting Beyoncé and Taylor Swift in the same boat should be criminal 😭

Emily

Interesting that you guys recognize the spoken word over a beat or music. Hip-hop celebrate 50 years just last year. Me too by the way. It has existed my whole life. It was just unbrellaed within R&B. Songs like this were the gold standard in the 70s and early 80s. Teena Marie had an amazing voice and for years many didn't know she was white. She is the gold standard of blue eyed soul. Teena Songs to check out Sqare Biz Ooo La La La Deja Vu Out on a limb (fav of mine) Portuguese Love (another fav) Rick James songs Songs Mary James (this is a 420 anthem lol) Give it to me baby Ebony eyes Bustin' Out Ghetto life A lot of Prince's early career was thanks to him opening for Rick James.

Tonya G

The discussion about talking over the track made me think of this joke about The Commodores https://www.instagram.com/reel/C74NBoAJDIN/?igsh=MXQzbnJvcjE4NHgwZw==

Kat

I always associate this song with the sitcom Martin. You’ll have to look up the scene of the two main characters performing if you have not seen it lol. Great suggestion and love the format.

Precious

Facts!!! 😂

Lily Taylor

This song is quite different from most of Rick James’ music just in case you guys decide to delve into more of his stuff. I’m so glad you all got to hear Teena Marie. Vocally she is so talented. Right up there with Minnie Riperton and Mariah Carey. Beyoncé and Taylor Swift could never. Just sayin’ I miss the old days when it was all about the vocals.

Jen M

Fire and Desire.....all time classic

Scott Britton

Ha ha, great little story. (dad)

The FrontRoom

Funny how Kai questions if people were more passionate back then because both Tina Marie and Rick James said that Tina was almost replaced because she said she had a fever and wasn’t gonna make the recording and when she found out that they were going to replace her she was pissed so she stormed over To the studio and sang her heart out

Anthony Mendoza

I used to not like Teena Marie’s voice as a kid but the older I got the more I appreciated it. She’s definitely got a unique sound all her own

Jordan Richardson

More Rick James! Although there are many jokes because he was quite the character, his voice was SO rich and giant. My favorite song by him is "Cold Blooded" 🕺🏾

Hodge House

Every time I hear this song, I think about the "Martin" show when him and Gina re-sang it! LOL! They were so exaggerated with their version 🤣😂

Hodge House

OMG!! So ready for this!!!
