The Case For Affordable Art

Here it is a day early

1. Why does art cost so much?

2. Why don't galleries ever lower prices for work that doesn't sell?

3. Why do dealers bid on their own artists at auction?

4. Why aren't gallery artists allowed to sell out of their studio?

5. What does gallery representation even mean?

6. Why aren't artists paid as employees by galleries?

7. Why can only .01% of people afford art?

8. What does "protecting an artist's market" mean?

9. Why aren't artists paid for months after they sell work?

10. Why do we think price reflects art's quality?

11. Why do so many artists want to make big, expensive art?

12. Why do artists continue working with galleries?

13. Why are Funkopops the closest thing available to affordable art?

14. Why is art inclusive in message but elitist in price?

15. When can I finally redeem my hustlepoints?

The Case For Affordable Art

Comments

I think this is great, and I'm working to pivot to this, but an extra reason artists might be hesitant (possibly more so outside the US where there is less of a hussle culture for individual artists) is that promotion, selling, and administration is a lot of work. The example of kickstarter is good to point out that these days a lot of kickstarter campaigns are successful based on their winning pitch production and correct "tone" rather than the actual value and viability of the project.

So what I get out of it is that the art that responds to current cultural situation, the more immediate it is (i.e. memes) the cheaper and affordable it should be (prints). And those works that turn timeless can be reproduced on a timeless medium (oil on canvas) and take thorough execution to meet the demand of a few. The affordable artwork helps to introduce into more difficult and less accessible work.
