Musical Opinions Wanted :)

Hello out there, fellow enjoyers!

I need your help :)

So, basically, I have started to write the script for my "Dreamcast Type Beats" video which is all about the musical identity of the console. I'm trying to find the tracks that really capture that clean, futuristic "blue skies" type feel.

Problem is... there's way too much stuff!

So far I've narrowed it down to around 27 games (listed below) which I think really capture the vibe but I definitely want to get this shortlist down a little bit before I go and make the video.

If you get chance, take a look at this list here and let me know if you have any thoughts or feelings on these soundtracks:

Blue Stinger

Border Down

Chu Chu Rocket

Crazy Taxi

D2

Daytona 2001

Ecco the Dolphin - Defender of the Future

Elemental Gimmick Gear

Ikaruga

Jet Set Radio

Maken X

Metropolis Street Racer

Phantasy Star Online

Power Stone

Radirgy

Rez

San Francisco Rush 2049

Shenmue

Skies of Arcadia

Sonic Adventure

Sonic Adventure 2

Soulcalibur

Space Channel 5

Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2

Toy Commander

TrickStyle

Under Defeat

Thank you so so much for taking the time to give this detailed feedback - it's very much appreciated and has actually massively helped me; there's a few you've convinced me to cut :) Daytona will absolutely be front and centre, don't you worry - really really glad you like this one as it is a personal favourite. Same for Ecco, which may be my favourite soundtrack on the Dreamcast... and that is really going some! Thanks again for all this feedback; it's really good to get a second opinion on so many of these, and I'm really glad you've discovered a lot of bops in the process!

Dreamcast Enjoyer here I come! I've listened or tried to all those soundtracks and here are my thoughts. And damn man, I didn't know the Dreamcast music had so many bangers. You've opened a pandora's box for me here, I'll have to dwelve more into the dreamcast music and relisten some of them, like the Daytona 2001 one that has me in love. Skies of Arcadia definitely gives the blue sky vibes (Sky Pirate Island song, Blue Sky Pirates' Ship (it's even in the title xD)) I've found that the Crazy Taxi OST doesn't have the vibe that you're looking for here. It's very punk, same vibe than the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games. And that isn't the blue skies, clean, futuristic vibe. So I wouldn't include this one. The Daytona USA 2001 soundtrack is the shit on wheels and you absolutely have to include it. Especially the song that goes "Dayyytooonnaaa". It makes me feel like I'm at a party. A constant party of non-stop dancey music. It has cheerful and fun vibes. It only has that, over and over again. Man I'm listening to it right now and I'm feeling so good. I feel like it can make everyone feel better at a party, even the ones that don't dance. I've found that D2's soundtrack is slower and more melancholic. I wouldn't include this one. From the Rez OST I've found that only the first song, Buggie Running Beeps 01 by Keiichi Sugiyama, fits the blue sky clean futur aesthetic. The Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 OSTs are so long, damn. I don't want to listen to all of them, but they seem like they have many different styles of music and potentially some of them are fitting. I leave this to you. The Under Defeat OST doesn't give me blue sky clean vibes at all. I haven't been able to properly listen to the TrickStyle OST because it isn't on youtube, so I've listened to it in the background of some gameplay videos. But it sounds cool and like it fits the vibe! Maken X music gives me violent and angry vibes. I don't feel like it fits the vibe. The Space Channel 5 music sounds off to me... Not this vibe. It sounds like old school jazz but in a old-fashioned way. Def not futuristic. In the Jet Set Radio OST I find that the song that fits these vibes the most is 'Electric Tooth Brush'. I've tried the Phantasy Star Online OST and I don't feel like listening to it entirely. It sounds kinda meh/boring to me. But maybe there are some themes there that are fitting. I leave this to you. Same with Shenmue, SoulCalibur, Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 and Elemental Gimmick Gear. I've liked the Metropolis Street Racer OST quite a lot, but I wouldn't know what song would fit. If you can find one in it, maybe it could be a very good candidate. Same with the Toy Commander OST. In Chu Chu Rocket the song 'Multiplayer Match' gives me the vibes of being in the beach, lying down and just chilling to the sunny day and blue sky. The whole Ecco the Dolphin - Defender of the Future OST fits this vibe. I would 100% include this game. I don't feel like listening to the whole Border Down OST but the first song that I've listened to, 'Last News (atract)', fits this vibe very well. I've really liked this song. I feel like Blue Stinger OST is too dramatic. Doesn't fit this vibe.

I know MvC 2 and Grandia both have banging tunes but I was going to try and keep it to Dreamcast exclusives where possible (although Rez isn't, so maybe I should do those...)

Alex Hayden

I'm a bit curious as to the omission of Grandia 2 and Marvel v Capcom 2, but I'm supposed to help shrink the list not expand it, so...my personal al must keeps here are the onvois: CRAZY Taxi, Sonic Adventures, Phantasy Star, Soul Caliber and Skies of Arcadia. But I'm interested to hear your thoughts on some of the games I haven't played like Maken X, Ecco, and Under Defeat. Honestly I'm no help here because all of these selections that I'm familiar with seem like they are a good fit for a DC music collection. Maybe get rid of CRAZY Taxi since it's mostly a handful of Offspring songs? Maybe constrain it to only original scores? I dunno this is a toughy.

You know I've never actually checked out Space Channel 5 part 2 so I should really give it a look! I'd definitely appreciate a link to the Rez interview if you don't mind! I always assumed he was inspired by some Euro deep-house type stuff based on the game, but I'd be very interested to read about it. And I can't believe you don't like the MSR soundtrack! Richard Jacques is a goddamn treasure haha

Alex Hayden

Glad to see phantasy star online that has some really beautiful synth stuff! I've got an absolutely great interview with Tetsuya Mizuguchi about the influences on Rez that I could send you if you wanted. In regard to Metropolis Street Racer damn, with that awful watered down country music, I think it might have some of the worst music on the dreamcast. Sonic Adventure 2, escape from the city, that's peak sega that. It's so exuberantly joyful, up there with Sega's Dayyyytooooonnnnnaaaa! As being pure sunshine distilled into musical form. Shenmue: Nightfall theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdZ3821-k8Y. Beautiful. A thing that's worth adding in addition to the Dreamcast having great music, on a deeper level it really is a music console, Samba Di Amigo, Rez and Space Channel 5 (1 and 2, We never got 2 on the dreamcast over here though), all music orientated games made by Sega during this small time window, that's alot of music games. Space Channel 5 2's music is considered to be alot stronger than the 1st ones I believe too, could be worth checking out.

Respect, my dude! I thought I was way out on a limb with that one as I never hear anyone else talking about it I find it very relaxing in a strange way :)

Alex Hayden

I adore the Chu Chu OST. It's so unique. Minimal, quirky, and stylish. Nothing quite like it
