I thought the best way to sum up Kali's Grapple Day was this side-by-side juxtaposition of social media photos. Although perhaps I'm being unfair: the newcomer had a very respectable record of 5-3, coming up just short of a coveted top 3 finish. Still, it was surely her big loss against the eventual champion, Sam, that will linger most in viewers' minds.
I interviewed Kali at the end of the day to get her opinions on the match. At first she seemed annoyed; I thought maybe I was asking about a sensitive topic, but actually it turns out Kali just doesn't like me.
"I have no regrets about anything," said Kali, after I finally assured her that, yes, I do have a sizable reading audience. She continued: "The points don't REALLY matter on Grapple Day. It's just about looking hot. Who gives a shit about Sam's trophy? Everyone knows I beat her in every way that mattered."
Isn't that a little... delusional, I asked her. Is it possible that she was just making excuses to cope with the fact that, for the first time in her life, she wasn't getting what she wanted?
Kali just smiled, as if she were expecting the questions. "Nope," she said. "Maybe YOU would be delusion if you said what I'm saying. But you're not like me. I'm different."
