Chapter 1: Smartphone in Murim Academy

I Got Isekai'd into a Murim Game plastered with Mods

[Final Outcome: Death (Qi Deviation)]
[Final Realm: First-Rate]
[Due to excessive intake of elixirs and reckless cultivation, your energy channels went berserk. Unfortunately, there was no one nearby to help, and you ended up dead.]
[※ Tip: Taking elixirs without considering your current inner energy can be poisonous instead.]

“Ah, fuck.”

Dead again.

Just as the sun was rising, my 7th Murim life came to a miserable end.

***

These days, my go-to game was "Raising a Murim Warrior."

Aside from its generic mobile game-style name, the game was actually highly polished and received great reviews.

I’d always liked character-raising games anyway.

So even though I didn’t know much about the martial arts genre, I decided to give it a try since I had a rare long vacation.

But…

It was way harder than I thought.

The pacing was slow, sure, but the characters would drop dead like ocean sunfish over the smallest thing.

More like Long Li■ the Queen than Pr■cess Maker in terms of difficulty.

It was supposed to be a game where you trained at an academy and reached the ending of “You became a master and lived happily ever after.”

But I got stabbed to death by bandits during a training trip, died from Qi deviation while meditating at the academy, got killed by a passing Unorthodox master I happened to tick off, and even got jailed by guards for causing trouble and lost all progress.

Sure, I might have played a bit aggressively… But Murim was a world full of lunatics who drew swords at the drop of a hat.

At least, that’s how it seemed to me.

***

My 9th Murim life.

“Hoo…”

[Ending NO.018: The Greatest Under Heaven (Orthodox)]
[Final Realm: Enlightened Realm]
[Having finally brought the Heavenly Demon to his knees at Mount Tian, you declared with grandeur, “I am the Heaven now.” No one present could deny those words. It was the birth of an unparalleled ‘strongest’—past and future alike.]

After swallowing my pride and following online guides, I finally cleared the game.

I chose Shaolin Temple early on to quickly boost strength and inner energy, opted for the fist-palm martial arts tree for its simple but powerful skills, and cut off all interaction with in-game characters to focus solely on cultivation.

The result: The Greatest Under Heaven ending.

However…

[Romance Ending NO.999: The Ascetic]
[You followed the teachings of Buddha your entire life and never once broke your vows. Though a trace of loneliness remained in your journey, you are deemed worthy to attain Nirvana.]

“…”

In return, I lost half the game’s content.

Characters from Shaolin—aka the baldies—couldn’t get married.

Sure, you could raise affection with women and trigger events, but the moment you did, you’d break your vows and lose all your perks.

In other words, I focused solely on clearing the game—

And missed out on all the lovey-dovey event cutscenes with the heroines.

The title of “The Greatest Under Heaven,” earned by sacrificing both women and hair…

If I were the game character, I’d bite my tongue and die.

I’m sorry, buddy. sob sob

13th Murim Life

[Final Outcome: Death (Assassination)]
[Final Realm: Peak Realm]
[After ingesting “Dispersing Inner Power Poison” at the inn, you staggered from the loss of internal energy and were ambushed by an assassin. The world mourned the fall of a great star of the orthodox faction.]
[※ Tip: Always watch your relationships. Someone holding a grudge might attack or put out a hit on you at any moment.]

“Fuck, not again…!”

Those cowardly Chinese bastards.
Poisoning me first, then fighting?
Filthy, low-life scumbags…!

[Would you like to quit the game?]
[Yes ■ / No □]

Unable to hold back the rising rage, I rage-quit the game.

I had already swallowed my pride when I cleared the game with the ultra-master bald monk ending.

But getting a harem ending was still damn tough, even with guides.

If you slipped even slightly on affection management, jealousy would flare up and relationships would start to wobble.

Trying to meet as many characters as possible within a limited number of turns made it even harder to meet the required stat thresholds.

“Hoo… Hoo…”

I calmed my anger with Lamaze breathing.

Getting stressed while playing a game?
That’s no longer a game—it’s a disease.

Anyway, I’d already tasted pretty much everything the game had to offer.
What remained was… ehehe… happily collecting CG illustrations.

Time to make some compromises.

Since I cleared the first run purely, would it be okay to mess around with mods a bit this time?

The deliberation was short.
The decision was instant.

I immediately entered the mod community and picked out a mod pack I had been eyeing for a while:

[Even You Can Become a Murim Master – Ultimate Mod Pack.zip]

Installed it right away.

As the gauge bar filled up—

drdrdrk…

—I scrolled down to get a rough look at what kind of goodies would lead me to the path of martial greatness.

– [For Beginners] Goo-Goo-Gaa-Gaa Difficulty

[No more dying like a sunfish over and over due to high difficulty!
No more wasting over an hour running around the map at the start just to farm items!
Perfect starting setup, perfect growth foundation.
Live the life of the golden spoon youngest son in the ‘Warring Gold Fields’.]

I liked it already—right from the start.

– [Team Wallu] Korean Language Patch (99.8%)

[Strong and noble Lupin!
The official Korean localization sounded too stiff for you?
Well then, you clearly lack the qualities of a true martial arts boomer. Of course, so do we.
That’s why we’ve softened some of the hard-to-understand wuxia-style expressions and adapted them to better fit modern sensibilities.
In that process, we also threw in some Western script (English), but hey, as long as you understand it, who cares?
Of course, for some characters, we’ve kept a more archaic tone to preserve their original flavor.
Fully compatible with other modern-world-related mods.]

I couldn’t help but agree.

When I first started, terms like Naegayo-sang or Gumyeong-jeolcho—a bunch of incomprehensible Sino-Korean nonsense—totally alienated me.

Like, what the hell is Gumyeong-jeolcho?

Just call it Ultimate Skill or Final Move—why not use good, clear terms?

Besides that, there were also mods like:

Skimming through the various mods—

A satisfied smile crept up on my lips.

One mod that particularly caught my eye was “Smartphone in Murim.”

User ratings weren’t that great. Apparently it made the game “too easy”?

But—

[Tired of sprinting everywhere using light-footwork just to raise affection points?
Ever had an event end before you arrived, even though you rushed over the moment the pigeon arrived?
With our 1 Smartphone per Person policy, that’s all in the past.
Now you can flirt with your heroine anytime using MurimTalk!
Experience a modern Murim with various other add-ons!]

Just like the mod description said, the game had lots of events that would disappear unless you arrived at exactly the right time.

And to raise affection, you had to physically go find the person and talk to them. What a pain.

But now, you’re telling me I can build affection just through messaging, without having to meet them in person?

That alone made the mod worth it.
It would probably cut down the grind by half.

[Installation Complete! Would you like to run the game now?]
[Yes ■ / No □]

Just as I was about to read through the rest of the mod descriptions, a notification popped up saying the installation was finished.

Well, with weird add-ons like “Gallery” and “Streaming” already bundled in the all-in-one mod pack, I figured they’d be useful somehow.

Couldn’t be bothered to add or remove anything manually.
I’d just explore the rest while playing the game.

Launch Now.

New Game.
Create Murim Warrior.

At the very bottom of the default presets, I selected Geum Si-hyeon, which seemed to be a mod-added character.

As expected of “Goo-Goo-Gaa-Gaa Mode”.

Even with the help of RNG, it’s hard to start with more than one OP trait, but this character had five.

Now this is a mod.
This is a cheat.
This… is a real game.

Grinning with satisfaction, I hit the Start Game button.

Whirl… whirl…

The familiar loading screen popped up once more, and a swirling vortex—reminiscent of the storm of space-time—began to spin at the center of the monitor.

Whirl… whirl…

Maybe because of all the mods installed, but it seemed to be taking longer to load than usual—

“……?”

──And in the next moment—

My vision turned black.

“Gaaahh…!”

A searing pain engulfed my entire body, as if I were being burned alive.

“Si-hyeon! Si-hyeon, hang in there!”
“Oh no, young master…!”
“Hhng… sob Si-hyeon… huhuhu…!”

I even started hearing voices, maybe they are hallucinations.
