#MakeThisBattle Feedback - Dec 16th

EpicLLOYD has been digging down into a bunch of match-ups that were submitted in the last round of MakeThisBattle! The theme this time around was 'Opposites Attract' so a few of the suggestions relate to that theme. Let's see what Lloyd thought about them...

Rambo vs GLaDOS (submitted by Michael Fairbairn)

First things first, my spellchecker knew who GLaDOS was. Now while that's awesome, albeit a little creepy seeing as that GLaDOS is a AI robot, it doesn't change the fact that I had never heard of this being. Also never heard of Portal. Now that's not always a huge deal if the character is broad enough but we've been getting a lot of these gaming characters lately and I just can't see any of the niche ones ever making the cut. Not when we haven't done Link, or Sonic or some of the other mega hits yet. Many might argue that Rambo is equally as niche (but I'd personally support Mr Rambo) but still accept that even he is probably too concentrated of a character. If anything I'd do Rocky or Sly himself and then a taste of all those characters. Long story short I just don't see it.

Henry Ford vs Karl Marx (submitted by swansong & mblpns)

Now we're talking. This is a great matchup. Both these guys have been flirting in the cut for years and it'd be great to finally get them some light. The father of the assembly line against the father of communism. A man who loved the free market and exploited vs a man who wanted from each what they could give and to each according to what they needed. Fun. A strong strike against this matchup is maybe the U.S. and European centric nature of the men themselves. As I'd like to see us branch out to other parts of the world more; but seeing as they guys were both Titans I do dig it.

BTS vs The Beatles (submitted by Lunarose)

To be honest this matchup would crush. I don't like it, but it would crush. BTS are so huuuuuuge right now and The Beatles have so much name recognition they'll always be a strong choice.  I think this would just hurt my ego a bit. I don't know much about BTS the band but I'm not very moved by such poppy music and besides BTS will always mean Behind the Scenes to me. I guess the macho dude in me has a  hard time taking them seriously. I do love getting a strong Korean presence into the battles though and typically the more I hear a matchup like this the more I end up liking it in the end. It would be expensive to produce for sure that's a plain fact. There must be about 6 guys in BTS and then the four Beatles. That's a lot of people. Maybe too many. Tough call.

Vince McMahon vs Spartacus (submitted by Red Claw)

I really don't understand the matchup. I know these two characters and think each of them has some merit but it seems as though each has much, much better options for adversaries. One led his people to freedom the other is what? A wrestling mogul? Just seems a little weird. I'd body slam this matchup and leave it on the map for dead.

Bugs Bunny vs Sonic the Hedgehog (submitted by J-Star)

I really like this. Two speedy rodents. Two cartoons. Two iconic names in their own right.  What else could you ask for in a battle. In the year that 2020 was, it would have made a great animated option and I don't really see any other way of getting this match up done.  I do think we could come up with interesting ways to animate these guys so that it wasn't a straight rip and we could avoid any copyright issues. Also, because they are both so fast it might be a fun way to justify some kind of fast rapper battle.  Another fun thing is how each of these two is from different generations. Many arguments about Bugs' old and outdated comments and episodes could be made etc. Tons of room for fun cameos as well. Good stuff.

Howard Stern vs Joe Rogan (submitted by Dante Walton)

This is actually really cool. I like both these guys a ton and radio personalities are something we haven't touched. With the broad spectrum of stuff that Rogan does, we could delve into the UFC world and stand up comedy arenas as well. Both very recognizable and successful. Both with very different approaches. I don't see this clawing it's way to the top of the pile for a few years but I do think it has legs.

Orson Welles vs Charlie Chaplin (submitted by Neo)

I gotta be honest. This one is never happening. Whilst the long term option of Mr. Bean vs Charlie Chaplin exists its gonna take something special to replace that as the go to Chaplin option. And there's no way we'd ever sacrifice that for an oddball match like this. There is also the fact that we've already done the Directors battle so choosing the next Director to feature needs to be the right choice. Orson Welles I think might just be one of those characters that, while important, won't see the headlines of a rap battle for a very long time.

"Monk's Hot Takes" - our manager offers some thoughts!

This was a bit of a weird round. Haha. Pairing opposites did flummox some people and ended up pulling together some strange combos. Rambo vs GLaDOS is one such match-up. But it kind of makes me quite sickly but strangely interested in equal measure. McMahon vs Spartacus sounds off (so I can understand Lloyd's reaction) but the idea of a 'real' gladiator type arguing with the guy who champions the 'fake' wrestling world does have something alluring about it. Karl Marx is one big name who hangs around never getting selected despite having all the right credentials. It seems unfair. What is holding us back. Possibly finding the right opponent. I have been content with Robin Hood as his opponent just to lighten the mood. But if we wanna dry things off and go with a more traditional match-up, then Ford is a good shout. I'd say my favorite idea of this bunch is Bugs Bunny vs Sonic. Primarily because I find the typical suggestions for Sonic (like The Flash or Usain Bolt) rather unappealing or maybe just unimaginative somehow. Perhaps those ideas have just been hanging around too long. Equally I've never liked a Bugs Bunny idea. So melding the two together seems fun. But I might feel different tomorrow.

A new round of MakeThisBattle is beginning!!

The theme this time is "21-21 Vision". We are looking for match-ups that feature characters that have some significance to next year - 2021. There may be a new movie, game or tv series coming out. There may be a significant anniversary. Or you might just think we NEED a certain match-up to happen as soon as possible. Or anything that fits that loose remit of being appropriate for release in 2021.

You can always ignore the theme completely if you prefer. But, when selecting the match-ups for feedback we will select 2 or more suggestions that match the theme.

Same rules apply. Seven match-ups in total will be selected. Three suggestions per person. You can post them in the comments below, email them to erbpatreon@gmail.com or post them on the Discord server in the dedicated '#make-this-battle' channel.

Deadline for submissions is... 5pm PT on Saturday 26th December
