LGR - Unboxing and Enjoying a VHS-C camcorder

https://youtu.be/38altPBT_zk

Bit of a different thing on LGR this time!

I had this new old stock JVC camcorder from 20ish years ago and now is the time to finally open it up. It's pretty darned similar to the original camera that I originally used to record LGR back in the day (and the pre-LGR videos as well!) so it was a real treat to experience one basically brand new. I seriously did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did around town, thanks to the battery somehow still holding a full charge.

And yep, that's all this is! Not exactly my usual fare but still within a familiar-feeling wheelhouse, so hopefully it's a fun watch. Now it's onto tackling the next video for me, which – wait for it – is a classic DOS PC game review :O

I spent so much of my 90’s behind one of these and a full size tape cousin of it in high school. I was asked to film high school football games and practices so they had footage to review and analyze. (I did college as well, but with much higher end SVHS and “pro-level” editing gear) So much nostalgia in this, I’m so glad you took the time to walk around town with it! Definitely brought back all the memories! Who needs rose colored glasses when you’ve got a 2” flip out color LCD and a CRT!

Joe Legeckis

Holy crap! Was this the first ever LGR bathroom selfie on VHS? Lol

Nachts

That was "The One" by Ritchie Everett! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCXF6H5FX-c

LGR

Ah man, I gotta ask, what song was used during the demonstration part? I need to listen to more of that musician/bands work, it makes me want to check my local on the 8's! Hahah

DFawlt Uzr

Somehow I feel that submitting VHS footage would make *ME* suspicious, ha

LGR

That's the cool thing about analog video, even though it's shot today it gives it a certain feel that just oozes 90s.

Because Why-Nerd

I kept imagining you coming across some kind of crime and having to send the footage to the police :)

Erik Sundström

Those really were convenient. I remember being slightly irked when we couldn’t do the same with MiniDV tapes.

LGR

My family had one of these (or maybe it was something really close to it) back in the day. I thought the cassette adapter thing was so neat. Until it broke.

Paul G

Yeah I had a blast with this once I discovered the battery still worked like new. Far too enjoyable to just go around recording everything again like I did when I was a kid!

LGR

It's great, no complaints so far! Though I've mostly just been doing random crap around the city and side missions, not a lotta story yet.

LGR

They lasted all day while I was out taping things! I topped off the charge once I got home so I could do the capturing of the footage, but it wasn't even half depleted so I likely didn't need to do so. The battery is surprisingly robust.

LGR

Ain't that the truth

LGR

Its fantastic, even though the pseudo-porn music during the effect demonstration gave me a moment of panic over if anyone could hear it, lol.

Honorary Octopus

Ha, the thumbs down on the old LGR video. We're our own worst critics. 😆

Tim J

This was fantastic! I still remember being blown away by the VHS-C to VHS adapter - that you could film something and watch it on a TV seconds later!

Gareth P

How long the battery lasted? Did you have to charge at any point while you did the test shooting?

Dukefazon

How are you enjoying Spider-Man 2? I got it on launch and played it for days straight and loved it

LevyNeptune

The B roll/demonstration was solid gold. The clicks from the zoom toggle, the urban exploration, cam pointed at TV lets play, and night test/Blair witch footage. I was half way expected to see a star rating under the video and the broadcast yourself logo. Also a dukes neon sign?! In anyone else's house that'd be weird, but you... on brand. 5 star video here. I hope it was as fun to make it as I had watching it.

PiraTed

Oh man, I had...some kind of camcorder in this vein, I don't know if it was JVC or not, but this super takes me back. Had a lot of fun with that thing, up until I lost the VHS-C adapter. (Which I don't think mine had a battery? That seemed pretty weird to me, seeing it here. I know if mine did, I probably would've done just the same as you as a kid in playing with it too much, ahah.)

Valora Inverse

Time to make LGR analogue horror

Alyxx the Rat

I feel like all of your blerbs should be recorded on this moving forward lol.

Aaron

that's true - did you notice the interlace artifacts when there was heaps of motion? might be the retrotink introducing it

Arizona Palms

lost my shit at the blair-witch esque shot in your yard

Arizona Palms

Now you made me go back and dig up the cross-country road-trip movie I made: I set up a Sony DV camera on the dash and recorded straight to hard-drive for a "continuous" 40-hour shot. Alas, the something crashed partway through and nuked the RAID drives, so I had to get by with just one and got most of the footage (except the really nice stuff in Bryce Canyon in Colorado.) Strange to see it now in all its 720x480 glory ...

Jason Olshefsky

Nice! I can't wait to see how the strange crucus sculpture will look like with that camera 😉

Frederic St-Georges

You get a big fat cigar for deinterlacing 30i video to 60p properly! Excellent.

Jim Leonard

I am having trouble even forming a sentence because my family had that exact camera and I had 100% forgotten about it until I saw the thumbnail for this video. Can't wait to watch it <3

Peter Metzger

There's something so warming and nostalgic about the look and the way the sound of a classic camcorder video comes across. Reminds me of all those 90's family trips my dad was always filming.

Mat Cooper

While i know that game reviews (eventhough clearly in your name) arent a thing that does well by viewing numbers, and i totally understand that you focus on what gives views, i mean i also love the retro tech stuff.... i guess what im getting at that i understand why you dont do that many game reviews anymore, but im happy for the odd (also tech tales!) video every couple of years, i just rewatch that 12 times over :D

Axonteer

Unironically one of my favorite pieces of art 😁

LGR

a dukes mayo neon sign? I need that in my life so bad

Zachary Outen

YEP. VHS-C held on for dear life for a surprisingly long time.

LGR

20 years old and it's not even DV? Oh boy. 🫣

Peter, quietly
