LGR - Casio CW-50 Thermal CD Printer

https://youtu.be/0UrUr9P21nQ

Right, so! Got back in town Tuesday and got right to work on a few video projects, none of which are complete yet because they either: need far more time to be completed still, or fell apart entirely due to old tech being... old. Such is life.

So I slapped this together real quick since I'm prepping to leave soon for New York! I will be attending Long Island Retro Gaming Expo on August 11-12, as well spending several days hanging around the area before that since I've never been there before.

Oh and uh, as for the video topic? Yeah it's just a printer, ha. Albeit a pretty nifty thermal deal from 2002 that I've always been curious about. It prints directly onto blank CDs and DVDs! Among other things if you put your mind to it!

For the next couple days though I'm pretty much just laying groundwork for those unfinished projects, hopefully getting to a point where I can complete them once I fly back home without too much unforeseen hassle. We'll see how it goes. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this bit of Casio silliness โ€“ and if you're attending LI Retro next weekend then definitely say hi! If not, you'll have another opportunity at VCFMW next month :)

That ending will be fixed, thanks!

This looks legitimately useful. I sort of want one. I definitely need one for the 3 discs I burn in a year right?

If you are flying to NYC this summer, please double and triple check your flight for delays. Especially if it's to La Guardia. Especially if there are rain showers in Philly.

Honestly, watching the printing on the wrong side of a disk was kinda painful. I understand that the content of the disk was copied. But still, destruction of a perfectly fine authentic retro media is sad. It would be better to try this on some CD-R with useless stuff or a disk that does not work.

This is really cool, and surprising how much better it is than a lot of the other options available at the time. I remember buying some Totally Legitimate DVDsโ„ข back in the mid-2000s that came with inkjet-printed labels, and they'd just rub straight off on your fingers. I still have at least one of them, and it has a big thumbprint on one of the printed areas from when I discovered that fact lol.

I just picked up and repaired a similar model (CW-L300) for use labeling discs. Beyond that, I'm impressed how well it prints plastic strip labels (akin to Brother P-Touch). The software, not so impressive - but hey, it still works. Fun fact - the CW-L300 (and similar?) models require a tape adapter to use the disc labeling tapes, which are smaller than the strip tapes.

hah! that was great

I was disappointed that you didn't print Cool Crab, but I watched to the end before commenting, and I should have known better than to be disappointed. ๐Ÿ•ถ๐Ÿฆ€๐Ÿฅค

Love the simple videos, love the more involved ones!

Thank you!

Humm... you could print QR Codes on there, have data on both sides. ^^'

The end was cut just slightly abruptly. By the way, this was a super fun episode, I was not expecing so much laughter from this little device, it's friggin' cool! Now I want one.

For a simple video this was extremely entertaining! Your commitment to printing on the wrong things was delightful, and I was really hoping the disc would read! Also the timing on the outro was ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป Have fun at the show!
