LGR - Building the Megaluminum Monster

Happy new year!

This'll be the first LGR video of 2020 when it goes public. How exciting!

That being said, the Lazy Green Giant was a fun build when I did it but I've been wanting to update it since the day the video went live. Almost immediately started ordering better parts. So here we are!

Seems the PlastiDip was a mistake, haha. Looked cool, felt cool, but in reality it was a nightmare on a computer like this. So much dust and grime built up even with regular cleaning. With this Lian Li case I've not only made regular maintenance more reasonable, but I've taken the opportunity to fix a number of qualms and desired I've had ever since building it last year.

Hope you enjoy! It sure is good to be back making the LGR-est of LGR Things like this after a month of Christmas weirdness. Here's to 2020!

I want to get that Lian Li PC-60 case so badly but they are hard to find and cost alot.

I HAD THAT CASE!! Back in the day.. Maybe 2002? I paid what I thought at the time to be stupid money for a side panel with a window and got a CCFL neon kit for it. Slapped GTA Vice City stickers on it. That thing was the bomb. I called it the beast :D. I wish I had that case now, Pretty sure my parents chucked it along with the Athlon XP board I had inside it.. Really miss that era. It was just when manufacturers had hit their most brave and before the downturn of pc desktop popularity. I got the same system a matrix orbital display too, white on blue!

Certain games like Unreal Tournament ( facing worlds esp ) and Halo 3 on Xbox 360 never get old. They are timeless classics.

lol that case, lian-li. this is when they earned their luxury tax. THICK sheet aluminum and SOLID cases that could be modded any way you wanted, even welder friendly. i worked at a small computer store when these cases came out, of course the owner built his main rig in a full tower version, we also had a customer/friend who built a mod rig in a mid tower from that line who embedded an lcd in the front. a regular lcd monitor. and you gotta keep in mind that multi monitor setups were not common back then, i started going dual monitor in 2000, and i of course had to have a separate video card for a second monitor at that time. this dude in 2003 embedded a lcd into the front of his computer as a second actual monitor (visible as a second monitor in windows xp) using a pci s3 virge. which makes it even more hilarious. it was a crazy setup.

Lian-Li made nice cases back then. I'm still running my gigantic PC-V2100B server case from 2004. It works now as my Plex server, has drive space for 19 hard drives (12 x 3.5" and 7(!) x 5.25"). It cost $300 or so at the time, but it's already lasted 15-years, and it still works/runs/looks perfect.

Chris Munch

Niiiiice... Yeah, man .. Lian Li made all the sexy cases back in the early 2000s as well .. I wanted one back then, but settled for an Enermax

Starting off the new decade with one of my favorite things, a new LGR win98 build video! Absolutely loving it, thank you very much! Have a great new year Clint!

Roel Eppink

This video was as delectably delicious as an episode of LGR Foods.

Love work on the build. Really does feel like a much sleeker setup now. And those Lian Li cases, certainly always lusted over those designs back when I was a broke student in the early 2000's. Gosh that makes me feel old. Hope you've had a happy new year, and have a great 2020!

Rob Caporetto

Looks like lian li has been making overkill aluminum monster cases for a long time. I have the pc 011 dynamic currently and it’s a beast of a case.

Zachary Outen

I'm sure they have! One of my current favorite case brands is Fractal Design. Super well-made cases inside and out.

LGR

Definitely did. It's a neat look, but so not worth it for a desktop PC. Would probably have fared better with a clear coat on top, but eh. Here's to a new decade of LGR things!

LGR

To you as well!

LGR

It really does, makes me wish I'd dropped it into a system years ago! Love how simple it was to set up alongside the newer Aureal card too, Windows 98 even comes with full drivers built-in.

LGR

Indeed, can't go wrong with silver/black, especially brushed aluminum. Reminds me of an 80s hi-fi audio system!

LGR

This is the way.

LGR

Nice. It really is a fantastic card for games like that. Rising in value too, I remember when you could get one for like five bucks not so long ago.

LGR

Glad you thought so! Doing yet another "end of the year/decade" video just seemed so boring. All I wanted to do was make a computer, heh.

LGR

Yeah it's an exciting time for sure! Really looking forward to diving into a few new things this year :)

LGR

Right?? It's the kind of build I consistently drooled over back then, but was always entirely out of reach. Such possibilities!

LGR

That's very kind, thank you!

LGR

Orrrrr LGR Foods is a lot like a regular LGR episode, just with more lunch meat.

LGR

Thank you, I sure hope it's a good year myself :D

LGR

Thank you, happy new year!

LGR

Haha, maybe I will. I'll at least leave a camera running while I do it.

LGR

Excellent to hear :) This one was oddly fun to put together myself. Probably because it was so straightforward, but with a rewarding bunch of possibilities opening up for the future with this hardware!

LGR

Nah, I'm not a fan of adapters for adapters. Gets kinda messy. Curious if that would work well for a hard disk interface though!

LGR

Pretty much! 1993 to 2003 will never die on this channel.

LGR

Ooh yeah that makes much more sense.

LGR

Ah you are correct!

LGR

Thank you, I'll do my best!

LGR

It will never grow old. Such class!

LGR

Sweet, hope you enjoyed it!

LGR

Happy new year to you as well!

LGR

Honestly yeah! SD card makes it very convenient. It has USB around back anyway :)

LGR

Ah. Cool. Who needs USB when you have the blazing speeds of SCSI though right? :p

Garoninja

Yep! Two USB 2.0 ports that I can't make use of.

LGR

What is under the small rectangular door on the front bottom of the case? USB?

Garoninja

That Win98 Boot sound... <3 <3 <3

Anders Enger Jensen

Happy new year Clint. Amazing what you did with the channel on your own. Keep it up!

meisterolsen

I had a similar vintage Lian Li case back in college. The PSU backplate should be removable. You can attach it to the PSU and slide the whole thing in and out. Mine had all 120mm fans, but I had no sliding motherboard tray as far as I remember. Super great & quiet until it got bashed up driving home one winter in a friend's SUV.

JennaKay

Other manufacturers should take a look at cases like these.

Torsten Giebl

Phew, I guess I dodged a bullet by not getting PlastiDip. I'm fixing up an old Windows 98 PC I had laying around and I made a last second decision against trying out the PlastiDip method. Boring old white paint it is! Oh, and Happy New Year! Can't wait to see what you'll bring us in the new decade!

Aggs

Happy New Year!

Rico da Rooster

Man that AWE64 sounds amazing

Alyxx the Rat

Dude, Lian Li was like the Rolls Royce of PC cases back in the day. Very nice build. There's something about the silver/black theme that just works. Happy New Year to you sir.

Deckard Games

This is the right way to start a new year, watching LGR rebuilding an old PC.

Torsten Giebl

Cool, you have the same Sound Blaster Gold model as me. Got mine for 80 bux untested with rusty inputs that ended up working great. I actually bought it just to play Settlers 2 on since the music sounds so good on it

Happy New Year everyone! 🍾🍀

What a wonderful, fascinating and relaxing to start the new decade. Peak LGR-y LGR thing

Happy 2020!

Happy new year Clint and cheers from Frogland.

Shuranosuke

Happy new year Clint! I've been paying close attention when it comes to PC hardware news and II can honestly tell you big changes are coming for the year 2020 and I can't wait until we get to play with these major advancements in PC tech! I'm sure there will be new hardware to make the retro gaming experience even better as well! There's always new gadgets to play with. I love your content and look forward to what's coming on your channel! Happy new year my friend

Terry Lee

Somebody definitely used that case before. Those weren't Noctua fans in those boxes, I can see the case has grey Noctua Redux fans installed and those are probably the stock fans put into the Noctua boxes.

Wiseblood

That's how you kick off the 20's... by pretending it's still the 00's! ;D

Kris Asick

Happy new year y'all! :)

Joe Moorman

Happy New Year Clint! The Megaluminum Monster is both sick (90s!) and 🔥 (2020 appropriate)! That old school Lian Li case and the dual audio cards... 🤤

Joon Choi

Happy new year's

AOL

Your videos are perfect, keep up the great work and Happy New year.

This sounded more like an LGR Foods episode. Lots or virtual drooling and “aw yeah” action. 😜

Pete Johns

I was thinking the same thing! 🥳

Happy new year! Here's to another year of LGR goodness!

Tktagmedia

Just out of curiosity, did you consider a CF to SD adapter so you could use a CF to IDE adapter but still use an SD card? I've seen some videos on YouTube with people using them but never tried them myself. I'm mildly curious if they work well or if they're more trouble than they're worth.

John Bailey

Omg, make a video when you peel that junk off the case. That would be so satisfying to do/watch!

Great video to start the new year! Love LGR builds!

Seth C

I think the build videos are my favorite LGR content. There's something very relaxing about them, and it's always fun watching your excitement over PC components. I'll miss the Giant, but I'm excited to see what the Monster will get up to in the future.

Modren

New PC build video?! YESSS I LOVE THESE!! Happy new year!!

Akselmo

Yeah, I'm staying home and watching LGR build a Windows 98 system on NYE and I'm totally OK with that! Godt nytår alle!

Adam Christensen

Happy new year man!
