LGR - Retro City Rampage 486 for DOS

Finally got a boxed copy of this to review! Mmm, new games on floppy disks, I approve.

LGR - Retro City Rampage 486 for DOS

Dunno why we can't reply to replies on Patreon, but...haha, if there was actually a classic Mac OS port of this, I may jump right out of my coat. I never see anything like that.

Tanara Kuranov

Rogue Legacy eh? Played it? Enjoy it?

RetroSwim

Yeah, I would hope situation here would be as good as there for obtaining old PC's. I have treid to get replacement for my broken 486 pc for two years now. I have seen mayby 5 on sale but every of them with crazy price. Most of them got more crazy price than on ebay.

Joonas K

Haha, nice

LGR

I definitely have to disagree. Finding an x86 machine is a thousand times easier than finding an Amiga or C64, at least here in the US. I can go to any thrift store and find several, and go on Ebay and find hundreds, if not thousands. Whereas finding a work Commodore machine is pretty tough in comparison. Not only that, but you can build a 486 PC using any number of thousands of available parts, all of which are very common and very cheap.

LGR

It's sad how hard is to obatin working 486 system nowadays. It's much eachier to get Amiga or Commodore 64 with reasonable price, but when you try fiend 386/486 only few pop out and they are priced way too high. Reason is also simple. People trhow out old x86 pc's easier than other computers from way back. Homebrew scene does not work if there is no devices.

This is absolutely amazing. Just seeing the directory contents in DOS gives me a nostalgia semi.

Well, in a way this obsolescence issue is also true of pretty much any vintage system. But yeah, the extra barrier to entry for 16-bit Windows games is a challenge, and I never found it to be an operating environment very friendly to game development beyond simple VBASIC stuff!

LGR

I wonder if the lack of win16 homebrew activity has anything to do with the similarity between 16-bit and 32-bit windows, from a programming perspective (which made porting easier). I imagine win16 development feels like an extremely primitive and fragile version of modern windows development in c++. And the result is something most people can't run, at least without setting up some form of Windows environment in a virtual machine, because they're using a 64-bit OS.

Well, I use a Das Keyboard Professional S, and that's what I'd recommend since it's dead simple and super high quality. But it's also a bit costly. A good alternative I hear is the Rosewill RK-9000V2, which is a bit less I believe!

LGR

Hey LGR, I want to buy a mechanical keyboard (I don't really play games, but regular keyboards feel mushy, and I think I could type more accurately and quickly with clicky keys.) Can you recommend a good mechanical keyboard that ISN'T necessarily loaded with gaming features, and that is shaped like a normal keyboard (must have keypad) Sorry, I know it's unrelated to the video, but this is the best way I know of to reach you.

It's pretty awesome for a freebie with the full game, that's for sure!

LGR

Absolutely, the thought that went into this is just great

LGR

None of my modern PCs have removable media drives, they're totally pointless now. But my retro ones, well, they must ALL have floppy drives, haha

LGR

Absolutely, I wish DOS PCs got more love in homebrew. So much potential!

LGR

I believe Brian talked about a classic Mac OS port, but it's not happening for the time being. Though with this guy, you never know :)

LGR

I love that this is a thing. Sure, it isn't the version I'd prefer to sit down and play (and the PC speaker music irritates me a bit too much), but I love that it was created… even if only as a "it was done for shits & giggles" exercise.

Rob Caporetto

It's been so long since I have had a game on a floppy that my latest PC doesn't even have a drive. I barely even use my DVD ROM anymore...

Douglas Holmes

oh that's so refreshing to see new stuff for dos. had a bit of a rant yesterday on a forum and twitter on how the "retro scene" seems to be solely focused on nintendo and jrpgs nowadays :( this version actually looks incredible

Banjo Guy Ollie

Beyond cool... been playing the regular version a lot so I might give the 486 version a shot in DOSBox.

Alyxx the Rat

Oh my gosh, is this still available? It's still available. I'm getting a copy. The only thing that'd be better is if they went and stuck this on Mac OS. At least to me. Then again, if that had happened...I'd probably have been on that from the beginning.

Tanara Kuranov

lol wut. What is even in that box??? Something like that seriously makes me think of those console boxes that come with a game or two, not a game in itself...

Lindsay Michelle

The bigger the better! About the only one I've seen as TOO big would be the collector's edition of Titanfall. http://i.imgur.com/DVy3OTL.jpg

LGR

Well... I can only play this video on 144p at the moment... extra nostalgia oddly fitting for this video! As for boxed PC games... do the biggest boxes suit your tastes more or does size not matter that much? I just wonder if you've ever seen a PC box that was TOO big for you... haha.
