I did most of the Ultima covers, and a lot of the graphics for Ultima and Wing Commander. I'm also a patron! :-)

Worst box art would be awesome. What the hell were they thinking with that alternative "Out of This World" box? Jesus.

This takes me back so much. I still collect big box PC games to be honest just because I enjoy... looking at them. I got Ultimate Doom for 10 bucks on eBay and the cover art has such a shiny embossed look to it and I can just stare at it for hours, man.

Absolutely. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for DOS comes to mind! Even Ikari Warriors, since the screenshots show the arcade game and the real deal barely resembles it.

Has a box with great cover art lured you in and then the game turn on to be totally different or bad?
2014-11-16 21:53:28 +0000 UTC
I'm happy you sent it, too! It really is one of the best box art pieces I've seen. And yeah, there are a load more, there's no way to fit them all into one video.

Patreon doesn't host videos, that's YouTube. So it'd be a YouTube problem if anything, and they're known to load slowly! Unless you mean this page you're commenting on, and in that case I'm not sure.

If they are original to the box and came from the publisher, I never take them off. Only things I take off are price stickers, and that's ONLY if I'm positive I can remove them with no damage.

This was a lovely nostalgia trip. I also would like to see more of these, be it best or worst box art.
Among my favorite PC game covers (that currently come to mind) are Fate of Atlantis (the box art alone makes you want to play the game) and System Shock 2 (Shodan's menacing stare).

I love box art as well. I remember the boxes of the earliest games we got. Star Trek 25th Anniversary, X-wing, etc.
I think artwork is a big part of sucking people into the game, unfortunately that means sometimes that you get a game and the artwork is the only good thing about it.
I would love more of these, also do one of the worst box art, I would love to see bad game boxes with artwork as bad as Mega Man's USA cartridge art...

How do you deal with stickers on the front of the box? I usually try to remove them if I have the impression that it won't do any damage. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's a gamble.

I'm kind of surprised Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition box didn't make appearance with the original one there.

I love your videos but does pateon take a while to load for anyone else? I have verizon fios so my internet connection isnt the problem. It usually takes about 30-60 seconds to load a video on patreon.

The reason there's a second guy running into the fray in the background of the Doom box art is to exemplify the fact that the game has multiplayer support. ;)
Actually, I think a video showcasing some of the worst box art would be appropriate now that you've done some of the best. I actually consider the System Shock box art to be pretty bad because it really doesn't match up with the gameplay at all. :P

very kool. reminds me of your video on game requirement stickers. :) initially strange to think of doing a video on this but.. makes for a really kool video none the less. would be kool to see you do a faves for console/peripherals box art, retro magazine ads for pc games or the like. Though I Don't know if you ever collected them.

Man, that is box-tastic! Thank you so much for sharing; some amazing. covers in there. I've come to think of big box PC art as really a lost aspect of game marketing. I used to to buy games based on the box art alone! Not the most savvy approach, and this definitely resulted in some crappy games in great boxes (ie. Pools of Radiance: Assault on Myth Drannor). But hey, I don't regret it because at least they still look great on the shelf today!
As for my favourites, I have always been a huge fan of Larry Elmore's fantasy art from his work for TSR. He did the covers for Might & Magic VI, and several of the Everquest games. Another standout in my collection is the collector's edition for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. It has the faux leather thing going on, and is a simple but elegant design.
Great video again, and like others have said, you gotta do worst art version! Here's an early nominee: Keef the Thief.

I'm quite fond of LSL2 and LSL3 box art with the lowpoly big heads and all. It's nothing special really but they're rather different from the rest of the series boxes and stuck with me for some reason.
Another favourite of mine is the Railroad Tycoon 2 (original) box with the black and white steam locomotive. I was really into trains at that time and having this rather large box with this engine on it was awesome. It took quite a lot of effort to persuade my parents to buying it so when I got it I just looked at it for a while.

I'm so proud I sent you that Transarctica copy ! <3
There's a lot of Amiga cover art I love : Flashback, Populous 2, Cruise for a Corpse, Agony, the Ishar trilogy, Sleeping Gods Lie, Shadow of the Beast, Dune, Syndicate, ... I'd vote for more Amiga boxes. \o/
On the PC side I recall a lot of good box art as well : Doom, Tyrian 2000, Cybermage, Mechwarrior series, Monkey Island 1/2/3 (the 4th went 3D and had atrocious keyboard controls... it wasn't so good... including the box art), the Command & Conquer series, ...
(I probably replayed Mechwarrior 2 and C&C Red Alert way too much over the years)
To show all of them is nearly impossible, sadly. But you're welcome to try. ^^

I officially cast my vote for another video, cataloging your worst box art. This video was great, and I look forward to more.
