LGR Tech Tales - Osborne's Rapid Rise & Fall

Inaugural episode of a new series on LGR. Quite refreshing to try something new! Please let me know what you think about it, as like always with anything new, it's hard to determine if something you've created is any good or you're too close to the material :P

LGR Tech Tales - Osborne's Rapid Rise & Fall

Comments

That's awesome, glad you're enjoying despite the initial lack of interest :)

LGR

You know, I actually have littl interest in computers, much less the old ones, but I like the format of your educative videos. I get to slowly familiarize with the subject while being entertained. So... Thanks!

Sabrina

More please!

Kristina Smith

My piece of post-glory-days Osborne history: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7055/6860884205_c3c2ebdaf2_o.jpg -- Sadly the yellowing has set in pretty bad, but I have since gotten rid of that grubby DVD drive! :P

RetroSwim

Awesome!!!

Love it. Commodore please. It would also be nice to see the TRS or Sinclair Timex as well. Big Old computer fan here. Own and use an Apple IIe, C64, Atari MegaST2

Kristen (Coconut81)

Think your on to a winner here Clint :P. Keep em coming!

Great new thing you have there. There are many topics out there for this new segment. Still the best video for me that you made is when you compared the gravis ultrasound sound card to the sound blaster. That is my all time nr 1 LGR video. I still can't understand how the could loose to creative when they had the most real sound compared to the bad SB card. My first PC was with a 486 sx25mhz and a gravis card. I remember my father saying that he sown the extra cash on the sound card just to make it special. Tell the tale for the people and bring back the forgotten sound of true freedom :)

Radek Fager

nice i hope on more like this :D with the detail`s etc

StigDesign1

The shorter length makes it feel like it could be a segment in an episode of Computer Chronicles. Scanning the comments, I see I'm not the first one to mention that show. :)

Nice and Games

This was serious quality, loved it! More of these 'smaller guys' who were the big guys in the past on this show plz, it's fascinating!

Krundis Flartlissgunff

Great idea, there is a ton of material for this out there :-). As noted by others, i'd also like this to be a bit longer :-).

Bad Sector

Thank you! Yeah, several are saying they'd like these to be longer, but I'm really trying to go for more a of bite-sized approach. But we'll see how the future goes!

LGR

I almost bought an Osborne computer! However, I did not have the money at the time so I stayed with my Commodore Pet that came with 8k of memory which I had expanded to the max of 32k. I also had s pair of 5.5 inch disk drives and a printer for it as well. No, it was not portable and the the system was in a metal box and weighted over 20 pounds.

Great video and great idea for a new series, you won't lack for material to discuss! The length was good, it must be hard to edit down to a ~4 minute video, but it makes for a nice concise tale of...tech.

Nice and Games

I enjoyed it - I reckon if you were inclined you could do longer and more detailed episodes in this series and people would enjoy that. Don't know how feasible that is with time and budget constraints. Perhaps multiple episodes on same topic? Atari and Commodore tales would be epic!

jbnbeeb

It's very professionally made. Plus, you have a great voice for narration. The tone is a bit different from your videos, but it's a good mix to keep things fresh. There are a plethora of topics to talk about, so this series could be going on for a while. I have a few suggestions for topics, but that'll go on forever lol. Either way, great video.

Pow3rh0use

I'd watch more Tech Tales videos.

Zach

Good stuff! I thought the length was just right; it's like a quick fix of computing history.

Therek

LGR Tech Tales! I love it!

d

Loved it. As a few other commenters said, it's nice to hear about something outside of the normal giants of the industry - so hearing about those lesser known firms would be great.

Rob Caporetto

Reminds me a bit of how much i miss All Your History are Belong To Us. I know it's not really the same, but always nice with a bit of tech history.

Mikkel Szklany

I agree on this front, 10-15 mins would be great. Appreciate they are meant to be short stories, but with so much content to unpack in this series, and the fact (I'm assuming here) with an existing audience that would happily watch videos of that length, I think that would be the sweet spot. That said, I'd happily watch you for hours. Maybe after you've done a few at this length, try some longer ones? Regardless, love the idea.

Chris Cook

This is awesome!

Alyxx the Rat

What a nice surprise. I love it. :) Could you do 3DFX's story ? ('cause I wave my fist at nVidia every morning) Or Cyrix (it was cheaper than a Pentium CPU in the late nineties) ? Or... Commodore (the poor Amiga did eventually have FPS games instead of platformers, even if it wasn't Doom, but it was too little too late :-( ) ? ;-)

Maximilien Noal

Great! do it up MOAR!! --- Make them a bit longer if possible tho.. but otherwise good!

Patrick Strater

My favorites of all your shows are the ones where you talk about history, whether it's old game reviews, old machine reviews, oddware, or now tech tales. Please make more...

Amy Mason

Thrilled to know I am not the only one who does that.

Amy Mason

It would depend on the subject I suppose, but maybe just a little bit longer, about 7 minutes? Makes it just about right for a bedtime story ;) Otherwise this series seems to fit perfectly on your channel every once a month or so. Keep it up!

Marnix

Great stuff! I hope to see more videos like this!

Mikael Lindgren

I second the motion.

Headset Guy

Great idea! Now we need one on Commodore, that is a story for the ages!

I know that today they're owned by Mikrolog: http://www3.mikrolog.fi/Tuotteet/Osborne But as for back then? From what I gather, a holding company in Sydney, Australia bought the rights to the name and started a new Osborne Computer Corporation. They eventually went bankrupt themselves, and were bought out by Gateway in 1995: http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Gateway+2000%27s+acquisition+of+Australia%27s+Osborne+Computer...-a017119225

LGR

Do you know who snapped up the Osborne brand name in 85? My 486 rig is currently in an "Osborne 386SX" case, which now seems like it was only ever Osborne in name...

RetroSwim

My goal is to stick to about 3 to 4 minutes. After all, these are just short stories, not in-depth analyses :)

LGR

I liked this but I think it could have been longer and more detailed. Maybe not on this topic but in future episodes.

Amber Coleman

Ahh, yeah, this is a series I'll also enjoy. From what I've read (mostly accounts of Apple employees of the time working on the Macintosh), Osborne himself was a bit of a douche when it came to his crippling hubris regarding his computers and the competition. It's really too bad that Osborne went under the way it did, because despite being an also-ran, also-rans of the early computing days were potential major players who could have changed the face of everything we know today had things turned out differently.

Runefox

This is pretty awesome, I like it! :)

ReeseRiverson

*nods* Yeah... I can see more videos like these being fun for sure, though the lack of snark may make some of your fans a bit weary. I'd say don't go overboard with these, maybe just one every month or two, but definitely make more! :)

Kris Asick

This is even better than watching old Computer Chronicles episodes

_nderscore

Really great video. I've always liked history overview-type shows, and this one looks more than promising. I look forward to future episodes if you decide to do them.

GenreChowderStudios

I also really liked this show! You are very smart and informative. I like to learn about this stuff..its interesting to me!

Brandie Drown

More? Put it this way. You COULD NOT DO TOO MANY OF THESE.

Kevin Furr

Loved it. Please make more of it!

Clayton Poitevin Júnior

I like this show! Not too short or too long, and quite different from all your other shows. And knowing you, you're going to cover a bunch of obscure tech history, which is awesome instead of hearing the same stories over and over. Keep up the good work! :)

Lindsay Michelle

moar

Jason Potter

I like. Reminds me of the sx64. My only quip is that I wanted it to be longer! I guess I only have osborne to blame that it's not. Damn him and his failed marketing strategies.

Nostalgia Nerd

All you ever hear is stories about Apple and Microsoft and their internal drama. This series looks to be a breath of fresh air, I'm hooked.

Michael Lamartina

I like it.

Keith McCaffety

Yup, I got it fixed up and working many years ago, talked about it in the comments section of that video! Well, "working" as well as these still do after over three decades in use.

LGR

I remember you had a video where you got boxes of CPM software and Osborne stuff. That's still one of my favorites, I love old retro computer related videos. Ever fix that second disk drive?
