This is such a Chicago episode and it's a shame that all of that went over most viewers' heads. I was born and raised in Chicago and always smile when I watch this and hear the references. Why? Because I was fascinated with serial killers due to a high school friend whose father was a Chicago police officer and worked on a number of cases in the Chicago area. The two guys working at the hotel, the manager and the maintenance man, had the names Scott Mudgett and Eddie Holmes. That is a direct reference to the serial killer H.H. Holmes whose real name was Herman Webster Mudgett. He was suspected of killing possibly up to 200 people, but was convicted of only killing one. The hotel in the episode is called the Englewood Hotel; Holmes' "Murder Castle", a three story hotel-sized home he had built, was in Englewood, Illinois. Every time I drive back home to visit family I drive through Englewood and once again on the way home. There are a few similarities between the two buildings and I'm sure the location people were looking for something as close as possible. I also liked how it had secret passages as that's also a reference to the ones Holmes had. Anyway, about the episode itself. As you said, Dak, these last two episodes have been slower than the excellent first four. And that's absolutely okay because you can't just have non-stop action, you also need slower ones to flesh out characters more as they learn knew things, find new clues, etcetera. You seemed surprised that one of the residents had been there for three months, but it's because they are currently residing there. They may be living on welfare or social security and can only afford a room in what are sometimes called vagrant hotels. There was one on the street where the punks and skins would hang out back in the '80s and I befriended one of the residents that I would see occasionally; he was a good guy with some interesting stories, but unfortunately he also had a drug and alcohol addiction. He showed me his room one night and it was smaller than the size of a normal bedroom. And then one day he wasn't around and I never saw him again. I loved that Charles Herring Lynk's name was code that he was innocent and not the Alpe and then Woges into a red fish (red herring). 😄 It was cool seeing Charles Baker (Dan Wells) again; he played Skinny Pete in Breaking Bad. They said the number seven a lot in that one scene. Seven has been my lucky number since grade school. The class was seated alphabetically by last name and I was in the first row, seventh desk for most of my grade school years. (nobody cares, Brian) Thanks for the shoutout Dak, I smiled for the rest of the evening. See you tomorrow!

That hotel looks better than some of the places I used to stay in when I was on the streets back in the late 90s. Honestly having at least a bed, a toilet and a shower/sink to use, even if it's a bit dated and grotty, is a far better option than sleeping in abandoned buildings or trying to wash yourself in a public toilet sink. Not sure about the US, but in Australia the place does at least have to not be a complete dump and have all amenties working. Hell sometimes if you had a few extra dollars you could get a room with an old black and white television, very posh.
