Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reaction 6x08

Comments

Tabula Rasa is one of my favorite episode. I think it's pretty self contained and seeing just this episode, you could get a good feel of what BtVS is as a show. The humor, the drama... The part about Spike and the shark could be confusing if you never saw the show before, but otherwise, I really think it could be a good introduction.

Josee (Griffe)

Aw. I just saw this now. Thank you, Brian. I was hoping I made sense.

Raven Dark

This is my favourite episode of the show. Humour, heartbreak, strong themes, action, and a devatsating montage with a fantastic verison of Goodbye to You. Glad you loved it too ♡

It's hard not to get really annoyed with Willow at this point. Even if the spell hadn't gone awry (and it's hardly unheard of for spells to go awry) it would still be a case of Willow doing something that was wrong, that was wrong for reasons that Tara had JUST explained to her, and that she had JUST promised not to do. ... Your shocked face at Buffy making out with Spike is one of the best I've ever seen.

Koz

Some important things to note. The spell only takes away the memories so buffy being happy here and capable shows that it's her mind that is holding her back not actually something physical wrong after coming back to life. She also shows the emotional concern for dawn like she used to before her death. Xander and Willow instantly feel a bond when they wake up even though they aren't in a relationship and I think it's because they are have known each other the longest so that familiarity is there even if there is no longer a attraction. Willow comment on her name and Tara saying she thinks it's pretty and later their unmistakable attraction shows that Tara is attracted to Willow even without her being a witch or doing magic which makes it so heartbreaking and tragic that doing so is what breaks them up.

Christopher simeon

Funny episode, and highlighting a couple great things. WIllow is really addicted to magic now. Seeing solutions, but never the potential drawbacks. Goin a week but not lasting a day, all the classic addiction signs. Buffy tring to deal with everything that happened, she got a small glimps of the things she liked about her life during the spell, or atleast the feelings, but then as soon as the spell was over.... I do think it might actually help buffy a bit. Tara and Willow here are heartbreaking, but you can't blamme Tara. Especially after Glory, as she said. Dawn being mad is understandable, Buffy is there, but not really. Giles suddendly leaving, and Tara who was kind of being the motherly person to Dawn during all this time, is now leaving aswell. All the memory loss shenenigans and partner shuffling there was hilarious, but all their personalities or preferences shining through. Now with the spell going awry, it will be interesting to see what it does to Willow. Will she step off the magic juice because Tara left, or will the fact that Tara left drive her deeper and more into magic. Regardless of that, I do think Tara made the right decision for herself.

If you remember season 4 episode 22 "Restless" Giles says Spike is like a son to me and Spike is wearing these clothes from this episode.

Mitchell McPhillamy

One of the funniest episodes and definitely one of my favorites. Just to get it out of the way, the actor that played "Teeth" (the shark dude) is Raymond O'Conner. I recognized the voice but didn't remember his name, so I checked IMDb. He's another one of those prolific character actors that kills it every time. Giles' leaving was something I had forgotten about over the decades, and it's a big, big blow to Buffy (and everyone else). I won't give my thoughts because Raven Dark explained it thoroughly and perfectly. Spot on, Raven. Let's be honest. If we had the ability to use magic, we all would; but Willow is taking it too far and this addiction could make her lose Tara forever and it will be a dark time for quite awhile. Me? I'd conjure sandwiches, rare first pressings of punk bands, St. Bernardus Abt 12 on tap from my faucet, mint condition 1970s Doctor Who memorabilia (particularly the Denys Fisher action figures complete with boxes), and bring Patrick Troughton (the second Doctor) back to life - he died at a Doctor Who convention in the US in 1987. I was lucky enough to meet him two or three times. I tend to veer off course, my apologies. Speaking of Doctor Who 🙄, am I the only one that got Matt Smith/eleventh Doctor vibes when Spike showed up in that suit? I loved how after their memories were erased they started creating backstories for themselves but were also drawn to those pre-memory loss relationships and discovering their names, etc. I particularly liked Willow being attracted to Xander because she had a hard crush on him back in High School. She finally (sorta) got her man. Even funnier was creating fictional relationships like Giles and Spike, er, Randy did. My favorite scene: "I must be a noble vampire. A good guy on a mission of redemption. I help the helpless. I'm a vampire with a soul." "A vampire with a soul? Oh my God. How lame is that?" Angel digs are hilarious. Oh, another line that I really liked was when Anya said, "I feel compelled to take some vengeance on you." For some reason I forgot Anya is a former vengeance demon. Short and final thoughts: Following up from my previous reaction comment, the sexual innuendo continues. "All Gone With the Wind with the rising music and the rising...music." When was the last time you heard an Allen Funt reference? Probably in 2001 during this episode. Anybody here remember Candid Camera? Great show. He died in 1999, two years before this episode aired. Even though it's not my favorite genre of music, it was nice hearing Michelle Branch again. She got really popular back then and has a beautiful voice. I welled up a bit when Tara left and then laughed when Joan and Randy were at it again. Thanks brolly, you're the best!

Brian Dworak

It's sad to see how Buffy deflates as her own memories return to her. In 504 Buffy did let Spike help her up, it was safe for her to do so then. She doesn't want to acknowledge any feelings but is acting defensively. Buffy - I feel like a Joan.. Joan the Martyr Vampire Slayer She feels like her "new life" is killing her.

Bud Haven

She's the only reason the world doesn't literally explode every other week, who cares if she can't "adult"? Just pay her bills and shut up.

Pajander

I actually think the way Giles leaves and why is brilliantly done, but it seems the writers did too good a job of being subtle with the setup for it, because I see a lot of the context getting missed by both reactors and viewers alike. At least until I read the comments here. This is gonna be a long one, Dak. My apologies. I did try to be brief. I understand if some people take issue with Giles leaving. I get it. But it's nice to see that some of the explanations in the comments went over exactly what I saw. In addition to the incident at Halloween (addressed again in OMWF when Giles says, "Have you spoken to Dawn about that incident at Halloween?" to which Buffy says, "I thought you took care of that."), when Giles and Buffy were talking about her mounting debts in an episode earlier this season and Angel called, she said to Giles before she left, "I'm glad you're here to take care of it." Buffy is not turning to Giles for help. She is handing her responsibilities off to him without even asking. She is using him as a crutch. We only see those two instances (that I remember), but I think we are to assume there were more offscreen. In Giles' song, he says, "I'm just standing in the way." You asked what that means. I couldn't explain on that episode because I was afraid of spoiling his departure, but he was saying that she can't adult and learn to handle things on her own as long as he is there. His song explains very well why he left. We have to keep in mind that Buffy's behavior is a textbook symptom of depression. We also have to understand that Giles probably doesn't get that. This episode came out at a time where people didn't have the awareness of mental health they do now. Put that together with Giles' age and his being from the "buck up" generation, as someone else put it here, and inevitably, Buffy's behavior doesn't set off the nerve in his brain that should be telling him this is a mental health issue. He's enabling her depressive unadulting, and his reaction to that is to take away the crutch. Also, keep in mind, the proper reaction to Buffy's behavior is to get her help. That's not an option. Even if Giles realized this, he wouldn't be able to do it. He can't very well take Buffy to a therapist and explain she visited heaven and came back from the dead. (Sidebar, but my geek brain just imagined that the Council has resources for when a Slayer ends up with mental health issues due to her job. Can you imagine what would happen if he and Buffy went to them? What kind of tests would they give her for that? *Shudder* My point here is that he left because he feels there's no other way to help her. One last thing. I too and glad you see Giles' leaving as a mistake, but I also want to point out that I think that's what the writers wanted here. They wrote him for us to see his side, but also to see that it was a mistake and wonder what the consequences of said mistake would be. They wanted us to see the Giles isn't perfect. And they succeeded wonderfully. Great reaction, Dak. Such a fun, yet emotional episode. This show does that so, so well.

Raven Dark

The way I see Giles' decision is that he doesn't want to be the helicopter parent, stepping in and making everything right even if it's something Buffy could handle. It's like when Giles asked Buffy if she spoke to Dawn about her Halloween shenanigans and she assumed he took care of that. Is that really his job? He's a father figure, but he's not actually their dad. Leaving may seem harsh, especially with the extenuating circumstances of Buffy coming back from the dead, but it's from the mindset of "she's never going to learn how to be an adult if she doesn't actually adult." He was also gonna leave last season too and I don't think the decision would've been met with such backlash. Side note: as it was mentioned, Anthony Head wanted to move back to England to spend more time with his family, he had been in the States while they stayed there. There was also talks of doing a spinoff on the BBC called Ripper. It would've focused on Giles in present day as well as flashbacks to his teen "Ripper" days. So presumably we would have had a younger actor portray a teenage Giles as well. Obviously it fell through but that was his reason for leaving the show.

Gabe Morales

How do you follow up an amazing musical episode? …Just like this!

Teresa Schultz

Lol my husband and I do this at each other, too.

Audra Foxgrove

There's really never any cause for "harsh lessons". Continuous research in Education has shown that harsh lessons are far less effective than constructive lessons. You learn more and succeed more with the advice and guidance of others than you do alone.

Jack

This exactly. Many reactors don't see giles side because the show does focus on buffy's view the most but it's the little things that buffy is not doing because she knows Giles is there that are the problem. Facing life difficulties and learning to get pass them and not needing others as much as a crutch is an important part of being an adult.

Christopher simeon

I have seen a lot of people react negatively to Giles' decision recently and I have to admit I never felt that way myself. Buffy has little connection to her own life right now. She has no real income, no adult responsibilities, minimal parenting role for Dawn. See last episode for example when she just assumed Giles would have dealt with Dawn. She has no reason to step back from being a Slayer and focus on her day to day life if Giles is always there to fix things or pay for things. Sometimes we need a little tough love to shake us into taking control of our lives. It's not quite the same thing obviously, but it somewhat parallels Willow's trouble. Why would she ever do the hard thing when she has the easy option to fall back on? Is it a harsh lesson? Of course, but until Buffy stood on her own two feet, she'd never grow as a person... and I was literally about to make a complaint about modern generations and kids today and I'm only 35 my God, I need to lie down...

Joel Featherstone

Whilst I don't necessarily agree with Giles leaving, I do understand his reasons for doing so, and it's not like his decision came out of the blue. Yes Buffy is suffering from trauma and depression, but look at what Giles has been trying to do for her, and how Buffy has repeatedly responded to that. Almost immediately upon arriving back in Sunnydale Giles reaches out to Buffy with kindness and concern, Buffy rejects that; Buffy has ample opportunity to open up to Giles about what she's going through, she chooses to confide in Spike (a former enemy) instead; Giles tries to help Buffy out financially, Buffy just assumes he'll always be there & then dumps her parenting responsibilities for Dawn onto him. Giles initially sending Buffy off alone to face the demon last episode was a last ditch act of desperation on his part, in my opinion, and yet he still decided to eventually gather the troops and try to help (again); the end result of that being Buffy trying to dance herself to death and then walking out of a group song with her closest friends to go pash Spike in a desperate attempt to feel something. At this stage I think Giles has reached the point where he simply doesn't see any other option but to leave & hopefully force Buffy into a situation where she has no other choice but to finally deal with everything.

Claire Eyles

Considering what Willow did to her, and some of the words Tara sang last episode, ('Wish I could trust that it was just this once, but I must do what I must; I can't adjust to this disgust, we're done'), the fact that Tara even gave Willow a week to prove herself was a huge consideration on her part. And Willow's response was to almost immediately trample all over that consideration. I know Willow's an addict, but being an addict doesn't give you carte blanche to stomp on other people's boundaries and feelings (I've been there, done that myself, there are no excuses for it). I am 100% on Tara's side this episode, and I just can't feel sorry for Willow at all, she bought this all on herself.

Claire Eyles

Re: Giles abandoning Buffy, you have to remember that this show is 20 years old - he’s a Boomer. The “buck up” generation. To him the notion that the best way to help someone grow is to let them do it on their own makes perfect sense.

Jack

I agree that Giles leaving Buffy at the moment is the wrong decision, but I can sort of understand why he might come to this conclusion. In the last few episodes we haven't been seeing Buffy ask Giles to help her do things, but rather she has just been passing responsibilities onto him. For example she just assumed Giles would handle telling Dawn off for wandering about town on Halloween. She didn't even consider being involved herself, or discussing with Giles first - she just expected him to take care of it. While Giles is wrong to leave, he is at least right for seeing the current arrangement isn't working and something needs to change. But of course all of this in only thinking of things in terms of what's best for Buffy. It's also possible Giles is going through his own issues that he is too... well... British to talk about.

rattusprat

A great episode with a lot of rapid tonal changes throughout, yet it still works (for me at least and most fans I think). One moment you may have missed the impact of (because I think you were still laughing from the previous scene) is when Buffy's memories come back to her, leaving her paralyzed and no longer able to fight. Sarah does a great job (as always) playing both Joan, who loosely resembles a more care-free earlier season Buffy, and current Buffy, for whom life is all too much, and showing us the change between them with just her expression.

rattusprat

This episode has so much connections with Restless. The shark on land comment. Giles and spike being father and son. Giles being in a relationship and don't forget the spike suit lol.

Christopher simeon

There are two main reasons for Giles leaving. One: Anthony Stewart Head wanted to spend more time with his family in England. Two: Giles is scared of how vulnerable Buffy is becoming, blaming himself, and running away from that, like you said. I'm very impressed that you see his choice as a mistake - it seems to me a good sign that your mental health is in a better place than most of the characters right now. Personally, I'd rather they wrote that he got deported by the Watchers' Council.

Ed Green

When you consider that Tony Head and James Marsters are only 8 years apart in age, the assumption that they're father and son is even funnier 🤣

CeNedra

Much as I always enjoy this episode, I spent most of the time impatiently anticipating your reactions to the two kisses - and you didn't disappoint! 🙂 As for the 2nd one, what does it all mean? (PS Do you remember seeing Spike in a similar suit in Buff's dream in Restless. Swinging back and forth, back and forth.)

denmaroca 2

To this day, whenever someone says the word "time," I still say, "Time, time, time is what turns *kittens* into *cats*" and everyone looks at me like I'm having a psychotic episode 😂
