Hello All!

My head exploded...It's been days since watching this and I'm still in shock!! I legit can't get my thoughts together! Buffy is dead - DEAD?! WHUT?! HOW!!! This finale was EPIC it truly was, it made me lose the ability to talk and/or think straight. Seeing Spike fall to the ground hit me hard. Watching Giles do the unthinkable and murder Ben made my head spin. Willow levelling up her Wicca ways was insane to see & Xander & Anya engaged???? I just cant...I loved this episode but that ending WAS TOO MUCH!!! Enjoy my spiral guys...See you for season 6?!

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support! Don't forget to share your thoughts on the ep/reaction in the comment section below & I look forward to reading them <3

Much love

Recently subscribed & catching up on all the reactions & both links to this episode doesn't work! 😭 Worst timing ever for the links to not work since this is easily one of the top 5 episodes of Buffy ever for me! 🤦🏻‍♀️😆 (Dropbox link says "expired" & Google drive link says "problem with file")

Can you imagine if this was how this show ended? What an ending. It was brilliantly written. While the following seasons don't exactly hold a candle to what we have seen up until now, I am happy it continued on. I love the universe and happy to see a show continue even with stories that are not as great as their predecessors so long as it doesn't jump the shark as they say.

Joshua Bull

Such an amazing finale! Loved your reaction! Not much else to say except... season 6 is going to be a rough watch. Good luck.

Julian Welton

This was the perfect ending to a perfect season. I feel this season had so much character growth for all involved and each episode moved the story arcs forward and then this finale wrapped all those characters and stories in a great ending. As for if it was meant to be an ending. When originally written it was but by the time it aired the writers knew they had at least another season if not two just on another network.

Collinson

(sigh)... This was NOT the series finale. It was never going to be the series finale, at least by this point in the series. Maybe back in season 2 or 3 when Joss first started coming with plans and teasing it, but by season 5 there was no thoughts of series not continuing, and the WB did NOT cancel it. The contract was up for renewal, UPN offered more money and snapped it up. Buffy and Angel were two of the top rates series for that network. It was known ages before the finale that there was going to be a season 6 on UPN, but the WB decided to be petty and started promoting it as the "series finale" in spite of that, presumably to say screw you for leaving and confuse as many viewers as possible.

Stargazer1682

What will happen in S6? All I can say, Dakara, is that you’ve seen Supernatural. 😁

Sarah P

So yes, theres 2 more seasons. But this was the finaly on the orignal network that it aired yet, and at first Joss Whedon thought this would be the finaly. As others probably already ahve stated. theres a ton of references to this episode and season scattered throughout season 3 and 4. couting down form 7-3-0 was the amount of days till this episode, that was in the weird dream sequence with Faith. As for the episode. It is one of the best episodes of the show, and a truly epic finaly. It wraps up a lot very nicely and is very emotional. It wraps up an amazing season and.. well... i just love this season. The ending between buffy and dawn gets me every time, and i love how you dont hear what buffy says untill she jumps. You can also see the moment of realization on her face, that she can jump, it very well acted. Buffy and Dawn are indeed made from the same cloth as Dawn originally doesn't hesitate and runs to jump. Willow is and always will be a badass and is hella strong. Giles does take over the part of killing Ben, and thank god (pun intended) he does. Give buffy some respite. There's soo much that can be analyzed from this episode but I'll leave it here for now and comment more later :)

Bart Aansorgh

And in 4x16, Faith reads from Buffy's credit card: 'expiry date 5/01', the month this aired.

Ed Green

Outstanding final episode to a fantastic season . S5 is by far my favourite.

Jim Greer

really? thats bad. I dont think i watched the later seasons on TV. I vaguely remember watching buffy after stargate, but my TV watching around that time was haphazard, entire seasons missed etc cause i was like 10-13 and had a stupidly early bed time, i think cause my parents were sick of me and wanted a break.

Merkavar

And yeah there's another two seasons. The ending of this episode was actually planned in season 3, Faith's line in the dream sequence where she says "Miles to go, little Miss Muffet counting down from 7-3-0" is a reference to their being 730 days until this episode and Buffy's death. There is debate as to whether or not this was supposed to actually be the series finale. The media plays/played up that point a lot, but Whedon and Co were already shopping the show around to other networks when Warner Bros said they weren't going to renew unless under a certain price. If you were planning on having a series finale, it doesn't make sense to start looking at other networks to carry on the show.

Claire Eyles

I still can't believe they literally spoilt the ending of this episode when it first aired in Australia. The 'next time on Buffy' promos they ran showed her grave, and it was like 'Why? Why would you include that in the promo?"

Claire Eyles

Such a great season finale, I loved it too. This and 2x22 are the highest rated of the finales on IMDb at 9.5/10 each, but I rate this much higher than "Becoming: Part 2". The "Previously On" montage was a great way to zip through the entirety of the previous seasons, and it was a nice touch speeding it up faster and faster and then cutting to the opening scene of running desperately through a tight alleyway. Perfect tension-building technique. This season was quite dark, but rightfully so in my opinion. We weren't dealing with a vampire king, or witches, warlocks, zombies, whatever; this was a god. And yes, as mentioned before, this was originally the series finale. Thankfully it got picked up by another station. However, I would have been completely satisfied if it had ended here. Buffy's ultimate sacrifice for the people she loved - well, and the rest of the living beings in the universe and other dimensions. I was very glad that Tara came back to us, but her performance was fascinating to watch. And Willow's powers are only getting stronger. Season six is excellent. Finally, I'm glad I had a box of tissues beside me. I got a bit of watery eye syndrome, which I'll blame on the 40 degree weather here, even though my house has heating. But you, Dak, tearing up near the end gave me a slight water leak down my cheek. Perfect as always, Dak. Cheers.

Brian Dworak

James Marsters' reaction to Buffy's death is phenomenal. *But... because of that, I kind of wish he wasn't in the scene, because I feel like the rest of the Scoobies deserve a bigger reaction over Buffy's death. Overall, I feel like season 5 is very well constructed, at least on paper. Everything fits together, a lot happens over a course of a short period of time; and nothing really feels drawn out. There are a lot of great and powerful moments, a lot of art. But I personally find this season to be very dry compared to previous seasons; and I think it's because it's very light on the humor, which has been what has helped balance the series' darker elements. Besides "The Replacement," which was very early in the season, and the Buffybot, the seasons doesn't have much in the way of humor. It lands a lot of the dramatic moments it wants to achieve, but I'd still rank season 3 and 2, in that order, above season 5. I'd actually tie season 4 and season 5; as each has what the other is missing. Season 4's long arc was not every strong, but it has a lot of great standalone episodes and character development; and also a lot of levity. Season 5 has a very strong season long arc, and some good character development, but less cheer. The two seasons together average one really great season, edged out by seasons 3 and 2.

Stargazer1682

Spike in "Fool for Love" "That final gasp. That look of peace. Part of you is desperate to know: What's it like? Where does it lead you? And now you see, that's the secret. Not the punch you didn't throw or the kicks you didn't land. Every Slayer... has a death wish." "Sooner or later, you're gonna want it."

Stargazer1682

Even the start when Buffy says "Why don't we start with, Hi I'm Buffy. It gets me. When Buffy is in the alley with the kid. He says, "But you're just a girl." Buffy, "That's what I keep saying." After everything, she still longs to have a normal life. When Buffy turns to the rising sun. Her look is not one of fear or sadness, but of anticipation. Spike said to Buffy in FFL, "Part of you is desperate to know, what it's like, where does it lead you?" "Death is your gift" A gift to Dawn, but also in a way a gift for herself.

Bud Haven

It's always good I think, to take a break after Season 5 before talking about it. Such a powerful ending to such a great season, and thank you Dakara for your willingness to share your Buffy journey with all of us. I am forever grateful for all the amazing reactors that are willing to watch this show while filming it so we can all go along for the ride with you.

Michael Roach

So now we can go point out just how much foresight and preparation these creators put into this show: in 3x22, Faith and Buffy are making a bed, and Faith says "Little miss muffet counting down from 7-3-0". 730 is the number of days in 2 years, Treat each corresponding episode in each season as the same calendar day, and 5x22 is exactly 2 years to the day after 3x22. Yeah. They dropped the spoiler that early. It's even referenced twice afterwards (4x15, in Faith's dream and 4x22, when Tara says "that clock's completely wrong" after they show 7:30 on its display). They left the bread crumbs, but they're only noticeable afterwards. What a masterpiece of a season.

Leafsdude

Haven't you figured it out yet? In a season full of gaslighting, it's all leading to the biggest one of all; that the next two seasons of are still about Buffy. When in fact it was retitled the Watcher Chronicles and follows Giles' misadventures fighting things that go bump in the night.

Stargazer1682

That's apocryphal. It was known for ages the show was picked up UPN. The deal with the WB was up for renewal and UPN made a better offer. Buffy and Angel were still two of the top performing shows on the WB at the time. Smallville wouldn't premiere until the start of the next season, Supernatural was still 4 years away. Felicity only had one more season. There's no way the WB would have willingly given up Buffy. I remember watching it in real time thinking how petty the WB was being, promoting it as "the series finale" when most people knew it was coming back, just on another network; but you know that kind of promotion caused a lot of confusion and probably gave some people who hadn't heard the news the wrong impression.

Stargazer1682

Before the First Slayer said 'Death is your gift' in 5x18, she said 'Love is pain, and the Slayer forges strength from pain. Love will lead you to your gift'. Buffy sacrificed her life for love, in the process embracing her human self and her Slayer self - love of her sister and of her friends gave her the strength to save the world at her own expense.

Ed Green

Another reactor gave an interesting interpretation that the opening "previously on" montage is a representation of Buffy's life flashing before her eyes. Now you won't be able to unsee that - sorry for that one. Love this episode that all the characters end up in a great place with respect to their journey over this season and the last 5 seasons, however with the minor glitch that their friend Buffy had to die for that to happen. Enjoy the next 2 seasons of Willow and Giles, the Witch and Watcher Chronicles.

rattusprat

Giggles over the Ben and Glory thing. Full agreement on watching season 6's first two episodes all in one go.

Raven Dark

IMPORTANT — While we may have some confusion about a connection between Ben and Glory, there is no confusion about 6x01 and 6x02. These were created and broadcast as one single episode only to be rudely split in two much later for syndication. The break is awkward and jarring. Please react and share these as a single episode. You will thank me later.

Darrell Palmer

I don’t really have anything to add to the previous comments, except that, no matter how many times I watch this, the site of Spike breaking down breaks me every time!!

Teresa Schultz

Oh the tears.... what an epic season. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride. It's been quite a journey so far and there's some amazing episodes and story arcs still coming your way in season 6 and 7.

John

Isn't this episode super reminiscent of SPN's Season 5 finale, Swan Song? An apocalypse being averted, by one of the primary characters sacrificing themselves. Sam leaping into the cage and Buffy doing the same, the two having distraught siblings looking on. With both shows having serious, series finale vibes hanging over them, at the exact same point.

PongPong31

As it was stated above, this was going to be the series finale had it not been picked up by UPN. Can you imagine if that was it?It would’ve been an epic conclusion but not one I would’ve foresaw. When I saw it the first time, I was predicting either Tara or Anya would be the one to go, with a possibility of Xander, they got me with Buffy lol. What got me was the look on Giles face when he saw Buffy’s body. It was very much the look of a parent who lost a child because, let’s be real, that was his daughter. I wasn’t a fan of the Orb just getting crushed like a grape by Glory. All the hype about it repelling Glory, the big deal made about it, just to be squished that easy was a bit of a letdown. All in all, a very awesome season finale and am looking forward to your season 6 reactions!

Gabe Morales

I love how much of Season 5 gets wrapped into this finale - Xander's construction job, Spike's crush on Buffy and his love-bot, Anya's ex-boyfriend the troll and his giant hammer, Willow's ever-increasing power as a witch, the glowy orb Buffy found when she first found out Dawn was the Key, the creepy demon guy who tried to help Dawn resurrect Joyce, Tara's sanity being removed (which enabled them to find the place where Glory was doing the ritual)... And above all, the blood ties between Dawn and Buffy. And that doesn't even take into account the gorgeous score and that lingering image of Buffy turning her face to see the rising sun (the dawn, so to speak) and the look of hope and purpose as she raced to the edge of the platform. The season as a whole is just so immensely satisfying, as painful as it was, and that's the reason so many of us list it as our favorite.

Denni Caid

The beginning of the season opens up with buffy feeling extra slayery. She wakes up feeling that desire to slay. I don't think it was ever confirmed but I think the monks literally used a similar magic that hoth (from Xander twin episode) and what ever magic that keep glory and Ben together. Duality of emotional humanity versus who you really are. We saw Xander emotional self as needy but he also has a confident professional other side but who he really is is a combination of both sides. Glory is a god but she has a human side with Ben. Buffy felt she was colder less emotional this season because of the job and dawn was very emotional. It's because I think the monks took out some of buffy's emotions and used it along with her blood to make dawn. But just like with Xander near the end of his episode and Ben. The longer you are with your other half the more like them you become. Xander being a bad influence on himself. Ben turning bad while glory started feeling more and with buffy bonded with dawn and dawn was going to sacrifice herself like a slayer would. Buffy literally killed the slayer part of herself instead of letting that part of herself that is emotional die.

Christopher simeon

I had an unusual experience with season 5. I essentially missed it all, but heard bits of information here and there, and then finally saw it on DVD later (I watched seasons 2-4 and 6-7 as they aired.) Even though I might have a little more criticism of this season than some, I still think it's great, and the finale is epic in the proper sense of the term. I loved your reaction, and your strong desire for next season. I have a fairly strong desire to see you watch it! 🙂

Koz

Trying to figure out if I can watch it at work without crying. I usually do get teary with this one. As Spike would say bloody hell... Should I risk it? You're gonna cry, aren't you? Seeing people cry makes me cry even without an emotional piece of media involved lol One thing though - back then I would've been fine with this being the series finale (even if S6 is my 2nd favourite season). Nowadays? Nope. So over the idea of ending a show like that. Anyway I'm sure that everybody already clued you in about the change of networks :)

DB

This is an all-timer. I always get emotional when Buffy talks about the things she’s lost and sacrificed. How much is one person supposed to give, right, before it all starts to feel pointless? Relatable. FWIW, yes, initially this was meant to be a series finale for the show on the WB, but then it was picked up by another TV network (UPN) and continued for seasons six and seven. Fun fact, the WB and UPN merged and that’s how we have the CW. This was also episode 100 of the BtVS, hence the little flashback montage to start. Congrats on making it this far!

Lolilie

I believe the story goes that a lot was up in the air regarding the show getting renewed by the time S5 rolled around - so they wrote it as a possible series ending. But thankfully they did get renewed.

m.,

We remembered to pack the Dakara Crying Emoji, yeah?

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Can't wait to watch this when I get home.

Collinson

I start work in 10 minutes. Roll on 10pm.

Ed Green

Omg. I'm at the gym with a couple of clients. Looks like they get to go home early today.
