Buffy The Vampire Slayer 5x03

First a little question. Is just me or scruffy Xander feels way more normal Xander than the other Xander? A little more clumsy and, for some reason, jinxed, but still him. It's like the magic rod more than splitting someone 50/50 it does a 80/20, or even a 90/10 kinda of split. Anya. Anya, I think, is managed quite badly in this episode with all the mortality thing, all because a dislocated shoulder, that I still find exaggerated and out of canon in Buffy's world for a simple punch. She went through more serious injuries, and once she found romantic the chance to die with Xander. Anya could have been particularly pushy with Xander to buy the new house with the idea of moving in together, simply because she wanted to see their relationship progress. This just because all she knows about relationships comes from tv and magazines. It works, it's funny, and it is coherent with all we know about her character. Riley. In this episode he lost all his remaining points in my eyes with just a single sentence … “she doesn't love me”. The huge problem it's not the sentence in itself, but that he said it to Xander and not to Buffy. Is it real, is it false, it's just something you seem to percive … doesn't matter, talk to your partner. If you decide to keep your mouth shut and say nothing, it means that you are ok with the situation and you lose the right to complain later on. Riley is supposed to be a grown man, most probably older than Buffy, with experience, and she also acted as TA in a psychology class, but here he behaves like a 14 years old. Maybe he didn't have any serious relationship before, I don't know, but it's expected better from someone of his age. There are no excuses.

Aw, no, Dak, don't feel bad for thinking messy Xander was the real one and the put together one was fake. You reacted the way the writers intended for you to react. You were supposed to thnk that. I gotta say, I love when that happens, though, when a twist is done so well that we actually feel emotions when we realize we were wrong. It's a sign that the twist is done right. This was a great reaction and I can't wait to watch the rest of this season with you.

Raven Dark

While not a Riley fan, it still breaks my heart how Riley is like "there is no part of you I am not in love with" and all Buffy does is remain silent.

Phoenix Dawn

I love this episode! It takes him being split like that to realize he really has that guy with all that potential inside him already and just needs to have confidence in his value as a person, boyfriend and his place in the gang. Plus, I believe this is the only episode you will ever get to see both the actor that plays Xander and his twin brother acting together in the series.

Again we see Riley try and be the support for Buffy. She said last episode that she wants to be taken care of and Riley seems to be doing it. He was rubbing her shoulders so she could relax but then she got distracted by the fighting. But he reassures her that he loves every part of Buffy. Even though he feels like she doesn't love him.

Christopher simeon

Is it really what she sees in him? Or is it was what she WANTS to see in him? Keep in mind, she was pretty repulsed by the other half of Xander, which is arguably a very prominent part of his overall identity.

I really like this episode. It may be just a MotW episode, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't matter. This is an important character moment for Xander and I find it very relatable. I know that most of us aren't going to have a magical encounter where we get split into two people, but most of us will have moments in our lives where we achieve things that we thought we couldn't. Moments where we push ourselves past what we thought our limitations were. Now you can't do that forever. It's not sustainable to constantly be pushing that hard. But you can still take something away from those experiences into the rest of your life. The confidence, the knowledge that you are capable of greater things, the willingness to try something that you're not sure you're ready for. These are the things that I think Xander takes away from this experience and the things that we can take away from those moments in our lives.

Yeah I didn't even realise they used his twin or that he had one util recently! Apparently he's filled in for Nicholas for when he's been sick as well!

This is definitely the typical buffy Motw episode, but a very entertaining one to say the least. The double Xander dynamic is fun and interesting. I do think they did the twist very well. As usuall with the motw episodes there is still some character development. Xander will hopefully get some moral boost from seeing that he has these qualities in him, and that anya definitely sees them. I also wanna give a shout out to the Buffy and Dawn dynamic, with dawn standing in the hallway. I do think you can really see they're sisters, and they nailed that dynamic. I'm glad they gave the sister screen time :). Then theres the Buffy/Riley stuff, and i agree with you. There just isn't much chemistry. There was some at first, but its been long gone. Riley is starting to realize something off that.

An enjoyable comedy episode. It comes with lots of character development but as usual there is also some foreshadowing. It's always fun seeing if you can spot it and speculating on what the future may bring.

Others beat me to it, but yeah. Obligatory note that xander double is played by Nicholas brendans twin brother. Also like Jack says, I love that anya believes confident xander is the real xander. She sees all those positives in him that others, himself included, often overlook. And dont worry about mistaking messy xander for the demon, the writing and directing deliberately lead the viewer to think that way, it's kind of a misdirect for the reveal to be a surprise. I also feel emotional when xander talks about giving up his life because he doesn't live it well, in his opinion. Hits home :(

In contrast to how you felt about your own negative opinion of Xander in your afterthoughts, it's beautiful that Anya immediately assumes that the confident and put-together Xander is the real one: that's the Xander that Anya knows. I also think it's forgivable though for us to assume the clumsy/messy Xander is the real one, in part because the show emphasises that with a lot of humour at his expense, but also because he often does. He's often self-deprecating, is often insecure, and I think that's the way he usually sees himself; and he's surrounded by confident, intelligent, dominant personalities. So it's forgivable I think that we've learned to see him that way too.

Jack

Ah this episode. I also love this episode. Fun fact - Nicholas Brendan has a twin - so you can guess who body doubled for Xander. I remember thinking at the time watching it wondering how well they did having 2 Xanders on screen at the same time - but that's because there were 2 Xanders on screen lol. If you notice in the car - Riley said 'there's not any part of you I'm not in love with' and he's waiting her response and she didn't say it back. I think that's part of where Riley thinking she doesn't love him come from. This is a great Xander growth episode. He's moving on from the basement and getting his own place - and a promotion. He spent all of season 4 thinking he wasn't good enough because all his friends are in college and he couldn't hold down a job. But now he's found his place, he's growing up and everyone grows up at different rates.
