Premium 384: Bobby Bowden & The Cartel de los Soles (w/ Special Guest: Alexander Aviña)

Professor Alexander Aviña sits in for Tarence today to discuss the latest round of Trump's aggressive posturing toward Venezuela. We also read and discuss Aída Chavez's latest piece from her new substack Capital & Empire (link below), and whether or not this is the first conversation ever to include mentions of both legendary Florida State Head Football Coach Bobby Bowden and Tren de Aragua.

I need Tom’s on the Fredonia, NY HS Mascot, the “hillbilly.” 😂

I think the cultural leveling of regional hip hop scenes has a lot to do with the fact that Pharrell Williams and the Tidewater Virginia sound blugeoned the entire industry to death in the 2000s and 2010s. It's crazy we don't talk about "the Virginia Beach sound."

You guys don't post the free episodes here and I'm not on X (formerly known as Twitter) so my thoughts on some stuff you said the most recent episode: 1. I feel much less upset at myself about getting laid off last month if I can at least say it happened in the month of the most layoffs since 2003. 2. Tom asked something like "What is the value proposition of the Democratic Party? What do they add?" But Tom, you yourself gave a pretty good answer years ago: fundraising. You see Jasmine Crockett talk about exploring the possibility of running for Senate in Texas? Quote: "[W]e spend about $100 million to get someone's name ID up... But the way I Iook at elections is that that's just first base."

The Daily Mail promised me that "nearly a million" new yorkers were ready to flee if Zohran won. I'm assuming the commute in the NY area was pretty backed up today. I know it's an unashamed rag, but it's still pretty remarkable that you can do 1920's "the urban jew-goblin"-style headlines as long as it's a muslim guy. But sure. There could be in excess of a 100 people who - for sure - are in the middle of selling their rent-controlled NY brownstones in search of freedom elsewhere.
