Bystanders record police brutality and murder all damn day, but Will Smith slapping Chris Rock is “unprecedented violence…” JfC. Sure, the Atlantic writers have learned to mimic accepted journalistic writing styles, but ultimately they have the critical thinking prowesses of 5th-graders. Overpaid, arrogant, deeply incurious dipshits.

re: egyptian coal, most of the electric power in greece comes from this one region in the north (Ptolemaida) which is kinda a big company town for coal, with a bunch of coal burning plants, open pit coal mines, and a bauxite mine in close proximity. Occupied since 6000BC and turned into an open pit mine! https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/mar/23/lignite-mining-greeces-dirty-secret-in-pictures

You should read this story about the killdozer guy and his solution to fees. "Marvin Heemeyer had feuded with Granby town officials, particularly over fines for violating city health ordinances after he purchased property with no sewage system. He had incurred the fines for improperly dumping sewage from his business instead of connecting to the city sewer system. On June 4, 2004, Heemeyer's feud with Granby culminated in a spree in which he used the armored bulldozer to demolish the Granby town hall, the former mayor's house, and several other buildings.[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvin_Heemeyer

Your honor, this is a simple misunderstanding. I was suffering a temporary liquidity crisis and made a small over-recovery of assets at the local Wells Fargo. That led to a ballistically kinetic engagement with law enforcement during which I performed a labor-force re-adjustment procedure.

Y’all should read Graeber’s Utopia of Rules if you haven’t. The Kafka bureaucracy nightmare from the intro made me think of it. Not like a homework assignment, I just think you’d like it. I just reread it because I’m taking a bureaucracy class rn and losing my muhfuckin mind. “No it doesn’t matter what you write but there better be 8 pages of it and if your margins for a block quote aren’t right you will be crucified and you will be expected to hammer the nails yourself. You know what you did”

I, Robot was actually not a terrible movie. Men In Black is the worst kind of subtle propaganda, makes you think a secret government organization tasked to protect us (coughcough CIA) is actually a benign institution. Bad Boys also terrible.

Adam Tooze? Never heard of him. Is he like the modern Richard Hofstadter?

On the topic of fees, currently about to graduate from an education program at a regional state college. Just paid my $87 for a cap n gown, $153 for my praxis exam, $250 for my EdTPA (a racket by Pearson), and when I get approved for certification, a $50 fee for that too. There's a hundred mfs getting paid off of me trying to get a job in a public school.
