[Poll] Main character's mindset gauge

Hey hey!
This week’s a little different — I was supposed to post June’s wallpapers (like every 4 weeks), but… turns out it’s not June yet! Since our calendars don’t run on 28-day cycles, things eventually get a little out of sync.
I didn’t want to leave you with nothing this week, but doing two progress updates just one week apart didn’t make much sense, there hasn’t been a ton of new stuff since the last one. So I figured this would be the perfect chance to throw in a quick poll!
There’s a question that’s been on my mind ever since Episode 1 came out, and I’ve seen it brought up in a few forum discussions: the wording used to describe the MC’s mindset.
As you know, your choices influence a meter that affects some of the MC’s dialogue (and occasionally unlocks very specific options).
Originally, I wanted to implement a full Dungeons & Dragons-style alignment system (Lawful <> Chaotic / Good <> Evil), but I eventually dropped that idea — way too many dialogue branches, and it would’ve made development a lot heavier.
So instead, I went with a single-axis system inspired by the Mass Effect trilogy, with two ends of the spectrum:
on one side, choices that aim for fast and efficient results → Pragmatic
on the other, choices that try to keep as many people happy as possible → Selfless
But some of you pointed out (and rightly so) that certain so-called pragmatic choices actually come off as more ruthless, and that selfless isn’t really the opposite of pragmatic either. Diplomatic would be a better opposite, but I find that it doesn't really fit with the spirit of some of the choices.
So I’d love to get your thoughts: based on what you’ve seen in Episode 1, which of the following label options feels the most accurate?
Keep the current terms: Pragmatic / Selfless
Rename as Ruthless / Compassionate (or something along those lines)?
The poll is at the bottom of the post, and if you’ve got any other suggestions for names that might fit this meter better, feel free to drop them in the comments. Let’s brainstorm a bit!
Wishing you all an awesome weekend, and I’m really looking forward to hearing your thoughts! 😊

Hey hey !

Yeah, it's hard to define a character's mindset with just a two-axis gauge, but I think this rephrasing is what will bring together the most choices.

Pragmatic also implies a certain objectivity on the mcs part, which also wasn't really accurate. Ruthless and Compassionate fit better probably.

2025-05-31 09:32:16 +0000 UTCI am fine either way, I do think Pragmatic was probably the wrong term to use though because "Pragmatic" can be all encompassing e.g. sometimes keeping everyone happy is the pragmatic option but, with our current terms that wouldn't work because we have the "selfless". While changing it to Ruthless - Compassionate might be reductive, it will be easier for some people to parse the ramifications of the choices provided.

2025-05-31 00:17:31 +0000 UTCI don't really mind either, I still have feeling that whatever you call it, sometimes it will not fit perfectly with choice anyway. :P
