INTEMPERANCE VIII - Chapter 20, Rally Around the Family

How the Best family reacts to the death of their patriarch. How Laura and Joey react to the death of their father. Just a small step into the Best world before we move on with the main story. As always, let me know how I'm doing.

Comments

Not sure if anyone else caught this typo (a lot of comments to read through), but Him instead of hime -> Jake said. “She was pushing forty years old and really wanted a child. But she didn’t want hime to be an illegitimate child, a bastardo.

wulf losee

I am back to work now and do not have as much free time to write. It will be out soon.

Al Steiner

When the next episode is coming. or are you taking a gap. 25 days were passed.

Thanks for the clarification - Much appreciated!

This is what Patreon sent to its creators, including me. New memberships starting in November will be subscription only. Existing memberships remain the same at least until November of 2025. ‌ "Hey, Apple is requiring that Patreon use their in-app purchasing system and remove all other billing systems from the Patreon iOS app by November 2024. This means that starting in November, new memberships purchased in the iOS app will be subject to Apple's 30% App Store fee. ‌ You're currently on a per-creation billing model, but Apple's in-app purchase system only supports subscription billing. Apple has made clear that if creators on Patreon continue to use unsupported billing models or disable transactions in the iOS app, we will be at risk of having the entire app removed from their App Store. ‌ So, starting in November, your fans in the iOS app won't be able to purchase subscriptions to your membership until you switch to subscription billing. And, as a result of Apple's mandates and in order to make sure that you can continue getting new members in the iOS app, we've started a 16-month-long migration process to bring all creators onto subscription billing by November 2025. This means that your current billing model will be discontinued in November 2025. ‌ We want to give you all of the tools and information you need to navigate this change in the least disruptive way possible. When you're ready, you can switch to subscription billing by going to your settings and sending a request to our product support team. After that, a member of our product support team will provide you with 1-1 support to help you switch billing models. Our product support team has helped dozens of creators switch from per-creation to subscription billing and have a tool to help creators maintain their earnings throughout the process. You can learn more about how we work with you to maintain your earnings and how the switch to subscription billing works in our help center article. Once on subscription billing, you will be able to control how Apple's fee is applied. You can either maintain your earnings by setting a higher price for new memberships purchased in the iOS app (default) or absorb the App Store fee yourself. Remember: the Apple fee only applies to new memberships purchased in the iOS app. You can migrate any time before November 2025, However, Apple's requirements still apply. Starting this November, your fans will not be able to purchase subscriptions to your memberships in the iOS app until you switch to subscription billing. We want to do absolutely everything we can to make sure that these changes are as smooth as possible for you, your fans, and your business. We didn't choose this path, but we're focusing our resources on making...

Are you sure it is 2025? The other creator and the link he pointed us to indicated it was this 2024. - it doesn't really affect me as I don't use an apple or android app store application unless nothing else is available. What I was wondering about was the "pay per chapter" payment that you utilize and what (and how serious)they were abut encouraging other authors from abandoning it. Thanks again - jj

Jeff J.

That change will not take effect until November of 2025 and, when it does, it will only apply to new patrons. Until then, I'll just keep doing business as usual. I'll figure out how to respond to this around September or October of 2025.

Al Steiner

Unrelated to this chapter - another author I follow on Patreon indicated that Apple will begin enforcing their 30% charge on Patreon memberships obtained/managed thru IOS and that other authors charging on a per chapter basis are being "encouraged" to switch to a monthly membership charges. Any word on this from your perspective and any impact on your memberships? Thanks!

Jeff J.

I don't know. I never established how many children each of Laura's siblings have.

Al Steiner

Is that 12 grandkids, counting Caydee, Chase, Grace and Joey's oldest (Brian?)?

William Cleveland

Love the chapter and seeing new and old characters alike. Did notice one thing: Laura doesn’t really talk to her wife Celia about the impending visit to her estranged family, after the phone call with her mother. She talks to Jake, especially regarding Caydee being part of it, but there’s no mention of Celia in that context. It’s likely just an omission for space constraints, but in the overall story context it could also be interpreted as a growing distance between them. Not sure what your intent is here but thought I should bring that up in case it’s saying something (by omission, even) that you don’t want it to say.

Greg Coleman

I've had enough requests along this line that I guess I'll have to find a way for Greg to at least have a cameo at some point. I'll see what I can come up with.

Al Steiner

Yeah, I guess you're right now that I think it through. Will change in the next edit (which will probably be the final publication edit).

Al Steiner

Notes: she said and t hen disconnected the call. Stray space in the middle of 'then' for them to come meet their grandmother, aunts, uncle, and various cousins once removed I don't think these are "cousins once removed" (that would be the children of first cousins), they're just "cousins" or "first cousins" or even who’s children they were whose

mdapkins

Thanks for the chapter Al, this will be another good plot thread to follow forward as Laura gets to know her family again.

mdapkins

Another very interesting and enjoyable look into the various family dynamics. Well done, Al.

Gregory Stewart

Very good chapter as always. Will be interesting how it all plays out. One thing I can't help but wonder is what Greg is up to these days and what his thoughts are on Jake and Celia. I understand he's not really relevant to the story anymore but I liked Greg, even if he is a pompous asshole 🤣

Chris Bailey

What would be the point? How does that move the plot along?

Al Steiner

That leaves the oil change in the Lexus. Breakdown of that car after the funeral? She can have a ride back with Joey.

Alle Joeng

Fixed it. Thanks.

Al Steiner

I think I already fixed that one, but I'll double-check.

Al Steiner

Nice sub-plot. Minor typo: “Grandma, though she only got to see *here* a few times a year, was very much a part of her life.” - “*here*” should be “her”

Alle Joeng

I was rereading *Chap 19* to reacquaint myself with the leadup to Laura's dad's death, and I caught this typo... Should that be the weather was "nice" instead of "night"? "The weather was night, with bright daylight, only a few clouds, and a temperature of 58 degrees. "

wulf losee

Fuckin' A!

Al Steiner

I couldn't think of a scenario where that would matter. Instead, the minor plot thread served to help reestablish the character of Joey Best.

Al Steiner

Will add it in the edit. Thanks.

Al Steiner

Yes, will fix for edit. Thanks.

Al Steiner

Thank you. Will fix in edit.

Al Steiner

Yes, I kept expecting a horrific breakdown with the truck. I like this better. His brother in law is settling in to being related to a rich, famous, decent guy. Fuckin A, huh Caydee.

Damon Bynum

I'm so bummed about the truck. I was expecting that at some critical junction it was going to simply fall apart like the wonderful one horse shay.

EdM1950

Are you against adding a c clamp to Joey’s list of tool purchases at the auto parts store? A shade tree mechanic doing a brake job needs one to do the compressing so he can fit the new brake shoe in. Authenticity and all..

Josh

Makes my day when I get an e-mail that another chapter is on line

Bill

“I’m sorry about your dad,” said Grace, stepping forward. She did not say ‘Grandpa’, she said ‘your dad’. That pretty much summed up her feelings for the man. Grace responded the same way. " Should the 2nd "Grace" be "Chase"??

Jeff J.

Caydee continues to be my favorite character and second place gets more distance with each chapter. Think towards the top of page 3 we have a typo. "Neither Jake nor Laura knew what the proper response was in this circumstance" should be Jake and Celia.
