INTEMPERANCE VIII - Chapter 15, Changes in the Routine
Added 2024-07-06 05:18:39 +0000 UTCAnother chapter that moves the story a little bit further along and ties up some loose threads started in the previous few chapters. A little longer of a chapter than most, but I had a lot to say in this one. I'm sure nobody will mind that part. I hope you enjoy it and, as always, let me know how I am doing. When posting errors for me to fix, please include enough of the sentence in question that I can use the 'Find' feature on MS Word to quickly track it down. Most of you already do this, but there are few who simply send me one or two words and I cannot tell from context or from searching exactly where the error is.

" It really had been a good one until she went Section 8 on him." Huh? Section 8? What does this mean

2024-08-29 11:16:00 +0000 UTC"only reason that all of the school’s students needed a different FAA check ride guy was because Helen" -- should say DIDN'T NEED a different FAA...

2024-08-29 11:13:46 +0000 UTCThe pool was filled with non-potable water? Why would you swim in water that is unsafe to drink? Seems unhealthy.

2024-08-29 10:57:53 +0000 UTCOdd, because Al's views on things like that color the whole story and have since the beginning. It's just part of his style. This isn't the first time.

2024-08-16 06:52:07 +0000 UTCI wasn’t offended - it’s Intemperance. I was just thrown out of the narrative and spent time wondering who the narrator of the story was in a way I hadn’t up until that point.
Matt
2024-07-11 14:44:19 +0000 UTCI'm sorry you found that offensive. Not my intention. My intention was to present a humorous, light-hearted observation of marital roles between men and women, as I've done many times in the past. Such observations serve to show that Jake and both of his wives share a typical marital experience that readers of both sexes can relate to. I've presented Jake as a bumbling, clueless male on many occasions throughout the story without anyone taking offense to it.

2024-07-09 05:05:51 +0000 UTCI found it really jarring when the omniscient narrator suddenly turned sexist: "Celia, like any wife worth her salt, offered non-helpful suggestions throughout the process." It's one thing when a character has ill-informed opinions and that is part of their life story and personality, but the narrator is another story. It really made me pause and wonder who was telling this story.

2024-07-07 19:47:56 +0000 UTCWe'll just have to see how things go. I am truly writing this story by the seat of my pants, with helpful suggestions by Patrons every now and then. The entire New Zealand trip was inspired by a Patron suggestion.

2024-07-07 19:41:47 +0000 UTCI must have the heart of a supermarket tabloid editor, but I'm hoping the ball will drop on the Kingsley Trio scandal. I wondered if the pool installers would see something, but no such luck. Condom Gate was a hilariously fun ride, and I was hoping some slimy pap would catch them in an unguarded moment or maybe that self-righteous school official would let the cat out of the bag.

2024-07-07 18:02:20 +0000 UTCI retracted the remark on Ms after googling a bit. English is not my native language
Alle Joeng
2024-07-07 16:10:30 +0000 UTCNot necessarily. Ms is the polite way, in this day and age (and that one too) in the US to address a woman regardless of her marital status.

2024-07-06 19:51:34 +0000 UTCI love the new schedule - a chapter every few days. On p18, you mention the Davinci code. Isn’t Da Vinci in 2 words?

2024-07-06 18:51:18 +0000 UTCBeing a Generation X member here. The junior high school is ten minutes driving time from the Scanlons' house. That equates to about three miles. If they're not going to trust their kids to be alone in the house for two hours, they are not going to trust them to walk three miles. As for myself, I walked a quarter mile to kindergarten from my second day there, two miles to junior high school, rain or shine, and three miles through some sketchy neighborhoods for high school until I was able to start driving there. My own kids were driven to elementary school and picked up every day because it was about three miles away. The junior high school and high school they went to was much closer, so they walked from that point onward, unless it was raining.

2024-07-06 18:42:18 +0000 UTCGoing into 'old man mode' here. Went to high school in a small prairie city in the 1960's. Our house was about 3/4 mile from the school and we walked, except on some on the real cold days when the temperature dropped below minus 30c. The local elementary school is only about half a block away from our Dad's old house (Dad passed a few years ago) and I still shake my head when I remember visiting Dad during the school year and seeing the lineup of vehicles in the afternoon to pickup the kids.

2024-07-06 17:07:36 +0000 UTCPg 20: Helen had come over for dinner, meeting Sean, Westinghouse, Cap, and C's parents. Pg 23: Jake told Helen of the new domestic help, the in laws and Cap. To me the second reference comes off as if he's telling her about people she hasn't met, not updating her on people she met two weeks ago.

2024-07-06 15:27:20 +0000 UTCJust a reminder - at some point Jake needs to repair or replace the pickup truck he keeps at the airport. Or maybe he doesn't, and you have to write about an accident or breakdown.
