You are not being charged for this post. Part of my recuperation from my shoulder injury has been trying to sit at a computer and do non-typing things to at least pin down what kind of posture does not aggravate the injury. Thankfully, Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 just came out and offered the perfect activity for this. I am not endorsing the program and they are not paying me to advertise it; I just enjoy it.  Readers of mine will have probably figured out by now that I have a love of aviation and flying.  This flight sim is incredible (if you have a powerful enough computer and graphics card to run it). I played around with making some of the flights that Jake made in the story. The first image is of the flight Jake makes every day from Whiteman Airport to his home in Oceano, flying along the spine of the coastal range.  The second image is of the flight described in Chapter 18, from Whiteman to Phoenix, taken shortly after takeoff.  The San Gabriel Mountains are visible on the left and the eastern LA suburbs are visible below.  The airplane is not the same as Jake's but it is very similar in flight characteristics.   This is my first attempt at posting images on this site, so... hopefully you all can actually see them.

I'm running a HP computer, about four years old now, with an I5 chip. When I first bought the game, it ran FS2020 but very slowly, with a horrible frame rate, and it became unplayable if I tried to fly one of the complex planes or in a high scenery region like San Francisco. I upgraded to a Geforce GTX 1660 graphics card and that improved the performance considerably, though I'm still only able to run on the medium graphics setting. I've been told that the game is so graphics intense that the computer to run it optimally does not yet exist. Also, you have to have a fairly fast internet connection to take advantage of the real time scenery. It loads as you go along.

Al, what are your pc rig stats? I purposely haven't purchased the sim yet because I wanted to get an "ideal spec" pc first to run it at maximum resolution and fps. I'm curious as to how the gameplay actually is. By the way, I noticed with the real, updated weather it apparently is including the red haze that is currently enveloping your part of the country from the fires.

It's supposed to be out on Xbox at some point, but honestly I can't imagine it would be as fun just using a video game controller.

Looks great. Unfortunately we became an Apple household some years ago and I can’t justify the expense of a new PC rig to get this. At least not yet...
