0074 — pt. 5, Meeting Antonyne

Outtakes post separately at noon in In-Universe and Author's Tiers!

I've included all the Antonyne Cheops Smuckles (aka Rustmouth Chafings) backstory strips in this update, so that you might enjoy a refresher in his curious history.

In even briefer summary: Antonyne was once the bluest of the bluesmen — bad luck all the way. But then a mutilated "singer" named Silent Bird Wallace came on the scene, and Antonyne's workhorse bad luck slowly transformed into good luck. So good that he lived to a healthy and ripe old age, with the police naming streets after him. The kind of stuff that would turn any proper bluesman's stomach.

Now it seems that the curse of good luck has fully bloomed in his grandson. Join us next week, as we explore the nature of luck, and whether one can truly manipulate the fates.

Also "b'ff b'ff b-CHEE" had me laughing out loud in this godforsaken airport terminal because as I read the first line of that sick beat I just KNEW the second would have to have two b'ffs - real resonance with my soul here today

Doc G

YES! I have always believed in my soul that "wain't" is the past tense of "ain't" and it is so validating to have a gentleman of Times agree with me on this

Doc G

I remember when Ray's mom put raisins the oatmeal cookies and he was never the same. Also, Beef came over and picked them out of the trash to bring home as a special treat, but Showbiz woke up with the munchies and you know what happened.

J Hardy Carroll

The Rustmouth/Silent Bird saga was always my favourite micro-storyline

Andrew Gillies

"I'm pretty lucky, but I try not to see it as a problem" might be the most concise summary yet of Ray as a character.

2scrogz

The answer is hidden in the definition of the word illegitimate, and since Sondra and Ramses did have a for real wedding, ray would instead belong to yet another extremely exclusive club

RaleighTSakers

That last strip has one of my favorite alt texts " due to his bad luck the cat died wealthy and well regarded"

NotAnon

I can see it. I bet she was out slumming one night and she saw Ramses house a block of Vermont Sharp for protein, and that was all it took. Girls like a boy who eats cheese.

Oppido

Hope someone got fired for THAT blunder!

GruntyGinMan

She went down to the meanest old dives on the avenues and was present when Ramses Luther handed 3000 men their ass with moves they said couldn't ever be done. She's lived is my point.

Josh Egbert

I have a hard time picturing Sondra as a "sofa" lady, but I guess we don't know very much about her life before Ray. Maybe she had some wild days of her own.

Oppido

Depends on whether being five forever is a "curse"... I suppose you could argue that the real curse is having to grow up.

Oppido

This sort of callback is why i love achewood

namwenmas

Shout out to whatever old-school lens manufacturer has been making the glasses worn by three generations of Smuckles men.

Oppido

Thank you for the recap

Ryan Boyle

I also wondered about this.

Oppido

Cripes, I think you’re right… can I even trust my own memory? 😰

DOOMFINGER

Maybe it was good luck that brought the medallion his way, resulting in EVEN BETTER luck. Anyway, IIRC, the medallion just makes you feel groovy, no?

Oppido

NOOOOO RAY IS SUPPOSED TO GET HIS GOOD LUCK FROM HIS MEDALLION OF CHOCHACHO THE INCAN FUN GOD THIS CAN’T BE CANON 😭😭😭

DOOMFINGER

Curses!

Starting a charity for people who felt self conscious about when their friend stoped using contractions upon a visit to their home

emitydna

Why does Antonyne argue that Ramses has many illegitimate children as a way to deny he is Ray's grandfather? That only makes it more likely.

PS

Philippe, I daily pray

Anthony Thompson

I feel the goodest luck reading your strips about the baddest luck, and it ain't even noon yet xo

Yelahneb Unicornucopiax

One cannot understand when friends change, when they are talking around your family.

Rob Satterfield

IMHO luck is roughly equivalent to chaos. Good or bad, it's fractally disruptive. I mean look where Ray and Rustmouth are in this moment. CONVERGENT.

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

Who ain't cursed in this strip
