That "ugly noise" is usually the grinding of gears within the starter not lining up correctly, and they teeth will catch for a short time, but eventually they'll strip out totally. Unless you've been diagnosed as having a bad alt, I'd check starter first

Within a year the steering rack gave out and we just said fuck this shit. The fact you are still keeping this Tacoma alive... especially given the basketball sized hole in the floorboard of the passenger side we all know is definitely there.. I can't decide if it's a testament to the American spirit, some form of vehicular necromancy.. some combination..
