OMG, I love, love, love this episode. As a shameless Sam Girl, I love when we get to see Sam be the Hunter he is. Don't get me wrong, I love the goofy, dorky, shy nerd he is as well, or the brilliant strategist. But I absolutely adore resilient, determined Samuel Winchester who saved the world through sheer will, and can take down 4 werewolves single-handedly while gut shot and traversing the wilderness to save his brother, because of course he can

I completely agree with the second part. I only discovered Supernatural in 2020, thanks to lockdowns, so I missed all the drama of the seasons when they aired, but to me this episode always struck me as just all around phenomenal. The acting, the writing, the filming, just absolutely flawless to me. One of my absolute favorite things about season 11 is the balance we see between the brothers, and the return to the relationship we saw in season 1, but elevated, with everything they have learned over the years. And with Sam, especially, I feel like season 11 lets us really see Sam's strength, bravery and resilience. Not that other seasons hide it, but this feels like a more... natural display of Sam's prowess, of his skill and courage, than just... reacting because he has to. Being strong because he's doing the trials, or because he's hallucinating, etc. This episode, we just... see Sam being a hunter. A badass, incredible, hunter, but doing his job. And it really shows the level that Sam and Dean operate at, even if Dean doesn't have the best control over his intrusive thoughts this episode lol

I appreciate that you can see the excellence of this episode within the nuances and messaging. When it aired, it really polarized the fandom factions because of the "Romeo and Juliet" parallels. From what I remember in SM posts from then, certain portions of the fandom rated this episode poorly because of fandom drama. It's kind of funny now that people were that pressed over something so silly. A good episode is a good episode - period. ETA: I also really like that Sam was trying to save Dean as well, and that kept him going. It stood out to me then, and even more now. He does not need to be saved anymore. I like that we are seeing the Winchester brothers being on the same level as equals.
