Like another commenter said, Rita was meant to be seen as a "manic pixie dream girl," a common trope in rom-coms from the early 2000s. Maybe it's because I've never seen any Bond films, but I was never a big fan of the whole Rita story line. Her accent also really annoyed me, although I like that they poked fun at it at the start of episode 5. I loved the kaiju spoof and Annyong reveal, though (plus the reveal that Frank truly cared about Tobias). After Buster sees the fridge has been moved, he says, "If mother sees this she will blow a cow" (instead of "blow a gasket" or "have a cow").

Viewed through that lens, the whole storyline is just a sendup of the stiff guy experiences childlike joy with a free-spirited beauty as his guide. Of course, someone who is so carefree might just be suffering from some kind of mental handicap.
