This was the episode I stopped watching for awhile because I didn't like recognize the characters. It was too much wishy washy feelings for the back half. The story was running out of time, was half baked and I stopped caring about staying up to speed. Why was I asking way too many questions about doing all this stupid stuff and they were not. I binged a couple of years later and fell back in when I finally saw flicks of the fun and emotion that made sense but it really felt like they were purposely making me hate every character except Charlie.

You were so right here! Why on earth did they choose to try out their cure on Abbadon of ALL demons? How did that ever seem like a good idea?!

Yasmin H

The only thing I can think of that would make the Abbadon thing make sense is that 1) they already had her and thought they could keep her immobilized long enough to do the spell and 2) seeing as how she is stronger than any other demon they had faced and they have no idea how to kill her it would be smart to “cure” her and take her off the board. The mistake was 100% leaving her unattended where they were and having her hands nearby (seeing as how they weren’t going to re-attach them anyway. It was very uncharacteristically messy for the boys, no question about it.

Ho boy, watching this episode live back in the day, we fans yelled it loud into the void on so many things like you, Shelley, - Cas, go back and discuss with Dean and Sam first, don't go do it alone - Dean, Sam don't leave Abaddon alone dammit, you should know better than that - What, no devil's trap at all when you have the Knight of Hell tied on a chair to name a few, lol. After Abaddon escapes, well, that's that. The writers wanted her to escape, so, whatever the Winchesters did will be deemed to be so eff stup*d as they, the writers cannot find a way to make the escape look happenstance, just not ... that. A wise man would say, something will go wrong ... something will always gonna go wrong. I chalked it up to myself that they need to further the plot, just like when they made Cas hurt Sam to make Dean busy elsewhere when he has the means to not do that, but did it anyway. And Cas simply just forgetting that Dean was angry with him for leaving in the first place, and he is now still going and doing things alone that got him into trouble just like before. Deep breaths ... they just want to further the plot along ... they just want to further the plot along ... Great reaction, Shelley, as always. I can't wait for the next episode, the season finale. It's gonna be epic, so so good, I have chills just thinking about it. Cannot believe that we are here now, end of S8. Congratulation, S9 is just around the corner.

Agreed, Michele, re Abaddon and Cas. I felt like I had to blame the writers for the Abaddon thing. It was clear when she was initially benched that it wasn't meant to be forever, but I say this from the privileged position of having come to the series really late (2020) and binging it. Same binging privilege applied to my interp of Cas. Never occurred to me that he should be given a pass. Work for that forgiveness like everyone else, dear sir!

I agree that Cas needed to stay with the boys. They need to keep their eye on him! Sam and Dean aren't perfect and have made bad choices in the past, just like Cas. But, I think the impact of those choices is different. We do give Sam and Dean a hard time when they do, so it's only normal to expect that Cas be given a hard time too. However, seems like fans never think Cas should. As if he's some puppy. That's one of my pet peeves and I get easily frustrated about it. I try not to, but I'm weak. lol But, the thing that I think really hurts Dean is that Cas didn't trust him. That he ran away from Sam and Dean with the tablet. That had to hurt a lot. And look what happened. I agree that it was stupid for them to put Abaddon back together. And they should know better by now than to leave her alone. sigh I think we've seen this Cas scenario before. I was saying the same thing you did - telling Cas he needed to go and talk to Sam and Dean before doing anything. Season 8 is the first season of a new era. Carver/Edlund. We get what feels like the show we fell in love with back. Well, generally. It's not the same, but parts of it have the same feeling for me. Only one more episode!

Michele

This one was a hard initial watch, I thought, because of the myriad collected "L"s; however, upon both reflection and this rewatch, I think what's truly hard is recollecting how innocent baby Sam and Dean were -- and *we* were -- how truly simple it seemed to save people and hunt things and trust those saved people lived fruitful lives. But that's not what happened to Sam and Dean or to us. They've been through so much, and we went through it with them. It's meaningful that the kills were all before Dean's deal and the entrance of angels for -- well, gosh, ya know -- the apocalypse. Our collective lost innocence was the hardest to feel. Crowley's monologue brought that home for me... That said, it was necessary, well done, and I'm grateful for the clip show. p.s. I was so (empathetically) pissed at Cas, which fit with lost innocence because I had so believed in him in season four.

Yes i love this episode and the continued use of knowledge as power. Chuck's books being used against the boys this way sucks but it did remind sam of something very important that Sam and dean have both forgotten and you seem to have forgotten too shelley. The wendigo episode is the episode that saving people hunting things quote first was said to Sam by dean when sam was just focused on finding john and wanted to not waste time on the case. He was so focused on the main mission that he did not care about what their mission actually is. Dean and Sam both have been so focused on the trials and the big picture that they have forgotten about the people they are supposed to be helping/saving They were not even reading the papers and when dean heard about the wendigo guy dying he barely cared. This seemed like another wake up call for sam. A harsh reminder of why he ran from this life Another women in his life killed because of him. Mary, jessica, and now Sarah. Ironically sarah commented on sam being focused after he finally understood what he wanted. But after her death he is at a crossroad. Now Sam is once again at a place similar to season 1 after losing jess and wanting to get yellow eyes. He once again asked by dean to continue even though he has gone through so much. Is he strong enough to continue after suffering so much? Now cas' story involves crossing a moral line for the greater good. Killing one life for the common good. Is it harsh yes but i would rather have the angels locked up in heaven because they need to be put in check after what naomi did. A hard reset on the mythos no angels and no demons around is needed because Fuck crowley sarah was a knockout. Tho that phone thing was genius

I agree they had Abbadon, of course they would use her. Unfortunately the boys seriously underestimated their hold on her.

There is so much to say about this one, but I will just say this. Dean only gets that angry with his family when he's hurt. And Cas not trusting him (plus the beating) is why he's so hurt. He always covers it up with anger. He'll calm down, he just needs to get it out of his system. They're family it happens doesn't it.

The person who took Kevin back from Crowley is metatron, otherwise Crowley would have either still kept him or killed him, he was chocking him when metatron saved him. I find it interesting that we see tommy being ready for a wendigo coz he had the necessary knowledge to fight, that's why I believe more people should now about the supernatural so they can be more prepared, he didn't know about witchcraft of course. Cas saying that he likes this bunker coz it's orderly, cas takes a flirtation "cool coat" literally & replying with "no, it's actually quite warm", autistic coding!!!! The deancas argument was painful, dean is giving cas the cold shoulder which is imo not the "typical argument between siblings" energy, it's just not a "bro" thing to do, Sam literally clearing his throat 😂, but that scene of cas making a gift basket for dean as an apology is so sweet, he knows him well, he covered all the basics in that basket, i wish we got to see him give it to dean. I get it, dean has abandonment issues, when Sam said: " i can't find cas, you think he flew town?", Dean answered: "sounds like him" which shows that dean's hurt that cas keeps leaving coz it's not the first time, basically he just wants him to stay & to trust him & cas keeps leaving & his plan again wasn't bad but of course it didn't work, cas really needs a win! #let_cas_have_a_win, i love that even when dean is mad at cas he's shouting "get better" 😂, I also love that Sam stood up for cas 😍🥺. The Sam & cas parallels are endless, they're both doing trials now. Putting abaddon back together is so dumb, especially when it was even before they knew Crowley was ordering demons to stay away from them, dean went straight for a freaking knight of hell!! Instead of a regular demon, when they have nothing that could kill her & their grandpa literally died so they can trap her!! Screwing up John's life in the process so now it was all for nothing, their grandpa's life, John's shitty childhood all for nothing, abaddon is on the loose 🙃, welcome to the episode where everyone is making questionable choices. Except for Crowley, he's being so smart, using witch craft he learned from his mom instead of sending demons & putting the hex bag in the phone is super smart coz that's the only place they won't look while he's talking on the phone👏. Rip Sarah Blake, i liked that girl but seems like no one gets with Sam & survives, Sam has so many dead girlfriends, Jessica, Sarah, Madison, ruby. We call it the dick of death, Amelia should be scared, if only she knew, This is what charlie was talking about with Sam having zero luck with women, Sam is just destined to see the women he loves die 😭, maybe he should start dating guys, see if the curse breaks lol. It's very interesting that the show introduced nephilims (the offspring of an angel & a human) & how they are not allowed to exist which implies that human/angel relationships are forbidden in the eyes of heaven, metatron even called her abomination, it's all very interesting that interspecies relationships are looked down upon it seems, when dean asked Anna why she wanted to be human, she said love & sex & she had sex with dean, but she was human at the time, but she must have felt something for humanity to choose to fall, so it is possible for angels to develop human feelings, all kinds of feelings & this waitress girl is a living proof of that, cas can have a kid. The closest thing we got to interspecies offsprings before was that antichrist kid from season 5 that was the offspring of a human/ a demon, he also was extremely powerful & cas was gonna kill him too. Great reaction, Shelley, can't wait for next episode!

So cocky cause they left Abaddon just withn the devil’s trap in the bullet, the hotel room had more safety than were they were trying to cure a knight of hell

Luis Nov

This is one of the episodes that make the Dean and Cas relationship fraternal. Between siblings, this stuff is normal, but if this were a romantic relationship, it would be an abusive one. You're right, benching Cas was a serious mistake. Using Abaddon makes perfect sense and if Crowley had not distracted them, all would have been well, but if Cas had been there, he could have watched her. Also, as you said, Cas needs the advice of his friends.

Shelley and The Reel Rejects have arrived at the season 8 finale at the same time. 🙌 Outstanding!

Stream of consciousness thoughts during the episode: 😉 Dean is a kinky mofo, so happy to have a dungeon. 😉 So funny they settle in with some Jiffy Pop popcorn to watch a horrific demon monster movie. A fun easter egg is that the priest Sam and Dean visit is played by the same actor who appeared as a former Wendigo victim in 1x02, the Wendigo episode referenced in the opening scene. Cas shopping for Dean is such a great scene. The clerk is so funny, “Dude.” I believe Misha improvised grabbing the clerk and saying “You don’t understand. I NEED PIE.” The director told him to make the clerk fear for his life. I want to go eat at that Vancouver restaurant where Cas and “Marv” ate. Looks so pretty there. I don’t why Cas couldn’t immediately know the waitress was a nephilim. Guess we have to blame it on him still trying to recover. So horrible for Sam and Dean to see the people they saved, now be killed by Crowley. Crowley being so clever using magic rather than demons, to prevent the boys from getting what they need for the third trial. I do agree that Cas could have helped with both Abaddon and Crowley’s victims. But now he is on his own quest with Metatron (I do also like calling him Marv, though). Season ender is next! Almost always a good time. Looking forward to your reaction.

AdoptDontShopPets

I agree. Your crossroad demon idea makes more sense than resurrecting a Knjght of Hell that you couldn’t kill with your demon blade. Too risky. With it written this way, we have to take it as them being too cocky for their own good.

AdoptDontShopPets

Its not like the had her in the trunk, they went to found her and it seems so much easy to go for a cross road demon that are very easy to summon, trap them and cure them without the feer of being overpowered, and like I said, it makes sense for after they knew about Crowley’s plan

Luis Nov

Of course they would use Abaddon, as they already have her. They would be foolish not to use her if they can.

Helen Wood

I blame the writers for the Abaddon thing, no way Dean and Sam would come up with that knowing how powerful she is, they’re no dumb, like you said it makes sense if it would have happened after they know that Crowley is keeping everything hell related thing away from them, but as a first option? No way Loved the callbacks to the early seasons but sad that it went down like that, Crowley is so f clever, he knows where to hit the boys, he knows them too well, I hate him, but I love him 😔 Great reaction! Can’t wait for the final episode 🙌🏻 PS: shout out to Castiel shopping for Dean his favorite things 🥰

Luis Nov

I can not wait to get off work and watch this!!
