I agree, when a new character shows up. I hope people will stop saying things like "Oh you're going to love them"! because it is a dead giveaway. I saw that happen with a couple of other characters too.

Friggin' Patreon deleted my comment again - but I fooled them this time - I copied it! Ha Ha Suckers! I love these re-watch reactions so much!! This was amazing! No matter how many times I re-watch this episode it never fails to be amazing!! Loved watching it with you again! I hate that you were spoiled. 😠 I don't know why people can't remember to shhhh! when it comes to ANYthing you're watching. 🙄 As to Sam's powers, I'd be all for them if he could have just managed them on his own, with whatever little demon blood he had in him from Azazel, but he only got good when he started drinking Ruby's blood and when he stopped after "Metamorphosis", he gets weaker and he has a really hard time pulling demons. He barely manages Samhain, but ends up with a nosebleed and it looks as if it almost kills him. (Also, he probably still has some remnants of Ruby's blood in there too since it hasn't been long since he quite drinking it.) Then in Heaven and Hell Ruby tells him his "abilities are getting flabby" and Sam says, "Yeah, how do I tone up?" and Ruby replies, "You know what you gotta do." So, I always took that to mean, that the only reason he could do it was because he was drinking more and more demon blood because when he stopped, he didn't really have the abilities anymore, or at least not very strong. Then of course he starts drinking it again in On the Head of a Pin and he ends up all power-hungry/addicted. He does admit to Dean in 5x02 that he tells himself he drinks the blood "for the right reasons and it feels true. But I think deep down, I just miss the feeling." In 4x18, Chuck also questions whether Sam is doing it because it makes him feel powerful and Sam doth protest too much that that isn't the case, hinting that it definitely is the case. So, I've always felt like, if the powers were just natural and he didn't have to drink demon blood to have them, then I'd be all for them too, but it's clearly so bad for him. His eyes went dark (almost black) in On the Head of Pin before he killed Alastair and then of course, completely black when he killed Lilith, again hinting that the demon blood was awful for him, and was, as Dean predicted in Metamorphosis, taking him down a path that just gets "darker and darker". And we were shown, that without the demon blood he doesn't really have his powers, that's partly why he went back to drinking it, because he wasn't strong enough without it. However, I completely agree with you that freeing Lucifer was NOT all on Sam, by any stretch of the imagination. He was so manipulated by Ruby, and he should have listened to Dean yes, but he couldn't have known killing Lilith could be a bad thing. Even Dean finally admits that at the end of 5x05, that no one would have thought killing Lilith was bad. So, I definitely feel for Sam and am so glad he's mostly forgiven himself for that. Cas' entrance will never be anything less than absolutely iconic! And yes, it changed so much in the show. I agree too that the whole opening sequence is incredibly cinematic! And SUPERBLY acted by Mr. Ackles, as always. There's just so much that he conveys; so many emotions he shows us, without ever speaking a word besides, "September?" LOL! Amazing. May I also point you to the moment at 30:18 in your video. Dean's 1.5 second expression here is remarkable and is why Jensen is king of the micro-expression and part of why he's so incredibly talented. After the Waitress-Demon accuses him of lying about not know who got him out, in a very brief amount of time, his expression says: "Look, you friggin' demon, I don't know" "Oh! You don't know either!" "And that freaks you out!" Jensen let's us see Dean have that revelation in a really natural and realistic way. Genius! But I'm madly in love with him, so I might be a little biased! 😁 Anyway, loved this! Can't wait for your Top 5 re-watches. I think it makes more sense to watch them in order, just to help you remember the flow of things, but if you'd rather watch them by ranking, that's gonna be awesome too! 😍 Can't wait!!

Everytime i watch the scene where bobby throws holy water at dean's face it cracks me up coz i Know it's lube 😂. i think even if Sam has salt & burned dean's body, cas would've still been able to build it back up piece by piece, coz dean's body was already torn apart & decayed, he grabbed his soul from hell & rebuilt his body from scratch. The way Sam & ruby deserve an award for their acting in the sam & dean reunion scene 😂, she asked if they are together as if she doesn't know dean for a whole season 😂, such a pro liar & dean asking Sam: "so what? You've been some demon's bitch boy?" If only he knew how accurate that was lmao. I too believe Sam could use his power without drinking demon blood, yes all psychic kids got their powers from azazel dropping demon blood in their mouths when they were 6 months old, but all the other kids were able to use their power without drinking demon blood, even Sam himself was able to move a closet with his mind back in season 1, i think demon blood only strengthen the powers he already has & i know he said that his premonitions & his powers stopped with Azazel's death in season 2 but he was able to use his powers again in season 4 with the help of the demon blood, i still think that he can use his powers without it but he is now too scared of what it had turned him to try to use it again. I love that dean described cas's loud voice as church bells before he knew he was an angel 😂 cool hint. As to who are those "special people" who can perceive cas's form it's either every angel vibrates on a certain wavelength that only a number oh human vessels are compatible with aka every angel has a limited number of suitable vessels, like Michael has dean & Adam, lucifer has nick & Sam, or it's religious people since jimmy was religious while dean wasn't.

I'm just loving the offhand comments throughout the episode. I laughed so hard when you said, "I hate when people tell me what to do". I've been known to have the unpopular opinion or play the devils advocate even when I agree with people just because I'm extra rebellious. I've always looked at it as needing the balance, but really it's because eff it. I do what I want. LMAO.

So sorry you were spoiled! I discovered the show in quarantine in 2020 (and yes I've watched it stem to stern more than once already). I would've become a skilled assassin had anyone spoiled it for me. :-P Yes, Sam doesn't like being told what to do (which I like about him). Of course, he also tells Dean what to do about how to process feelings... One could argue that Dean is often right about what Sam should do physically just as one could argue Sam is often right about what Dean should do emotionally. As a younger / middle sibling, I feel empathy annoyance for both of them when the other's really pushin' it. (I won't say which one of the brothers I tend to agree with, though I will say I idolized my older sister even when at loggerheads and probably should've listened more often than I did.) "Empathy annoyance" while seeing both sides: the constant bane of middle children.

This is absolutely one of my most favorite episodes, for obvious reasons - since it's the very first one where get to meet Cas. For me, I always interpreted Cas's remark about 'you don't think you deserve to be saved?' was him essentially just reading Dean's mind and spitting out exactly what was going on in his head. He didn't understand the full context of the hows or whys of Dean's time in the Pit and how that had traumatized Dean. He knew Dean didn't think he deserved to be saved, but I just don't think Cas had the emotional context, yet, to understand *why* Dean felt that way. ALso - re: the 'certain people, special people' who can see/hear Cas in his true form - I've done a lot of thinking about it and the thing to remember about angels in this universe is that they are multi-dimensional wavelengths of angelic intent in their true forms. If you think about wavelengths, that loops in the concept of frequencies (angel radio, etc.), so I figure - since Dean is considered Michael's vessel (an archangel), he wouldn't be able to see Cas's true form because Cas as a seraph is vibrating at a different wavelength. Cas's wavelength interacting with Dean outside of a vessel was just way too strong for stuff like the TV and mirrors and such (wavelengths = sound waves = frequency = vibrations), but Dean still couldn't understand him, because of who he is. Jimmy could, no problem - even when Cas was a free-floating angelic ball of light - because, like he said to his wife, it's in his blood. Just like being Michael's vessel is in Dean's blood. :D

You are right this was the beginning of the crack of Sam and Dean's relationship. Heaven and Hell pulling them from both ends. I never trusted Ruby, because in Sn 3 she kept showing herself to Sam when he was alone. I know by ep 9 she showed up with Dean. But I thought it was sketchy and as Sn 4 went on it just proved I was right. Also, Dean not liking her prejudiced me against her. He kept saying "She's a demon Sam" and I was always like "yeah Dean's right" And then when I found out the source of Sam's power I was done. He was never going to be able to harness his power for good when the source was polluted. Ok now other than Death, that was the most fantastic entrance of a character on a tv show. Whether you ship or not the chemistry between the characters was undeniable. I am so loving re-watching with you. I don't care what order you do them, but personally I like rank order. Since we've all seen the show up to this point chronological isn't important. I'm now going to re-watch your original reaction for your initial thoughts.

Brenda Lewis

I remember being so frustrated at other viewers for their lavish comments about Castiel in the comments to your original reaction to this episode. I knew it would happen, because it always happens, but it was still frustrating. People would go on and on about Castiel and it was obvious that he would be a recurring character and that he was seen as a big part of the show. Instead of letting you discover that over time, you were being told that this brand new character is super important and a fan favorite and so on and so on.

Michele

Loving the rewatches ♥️. I don’t think the order matters; chronological or whichever one you’re wanting to watch at the moment.

Lostmyshoe22

I believe the reason they got rid of the samulet is because it kept hitting Jensen in the face

Lostmyshoe22

I absolutely loved this rewatch 😍, such an iconic episode, i owe this episode everything, i am fine with whatever order, i prefer to see the man who would be king, the end & point of no return first if i have to choose but whatever is great, my favorite episode of the entire show is free to be you & me, it's such a comfort episode for me even if it's not the biggest, it's the start of dean & cas's friendship & it brings me so much joy, don't know if it's in your top 10 tho, so many great episodes in this show, it's so hard to pick, great rewatch 👏😍

Hasnaa

Chronological sounds cool to me. It may also help remember the mindset at the time.

AdoptDontShopPets

I will send you a clip where Jensen talks about why he wanted to get rid of the samulet

AdoptDontShopPets

Shelly: I don't like being told what to do. Apparently Cas doesn't like being told what to do either. 🤣 (Well at least not by humans)

Steve Quast

I am fine with any order in the rewatch. On the defense of unintended spoilers i think it has been so long watching old episodes that we fans sometimes forget the writers intent and blurt out things that may have purposely been vague at the time (because we did not know where the story was going) that the story does not want you to suspect yet. For example i watched season 4 when it came out and the sam and the ruby betrayal was definitely not clear and meant to be more conflicting instead of sam clearly being wrong. But many people commented and hinted that ruby should not be trusted even before the show did on your videos because they know the outcome. It is a hard line to juggle which is why i try to only point out things i see in the episode and let you draw conclusions about the rest of the season most of the time. Tho i do slip up sometimes.

Christopher simeon

"So are you two like....together...?" lol I guess some fans seem to want it that way (episode 18 *nudge* *wink*). We're all well aware now that Ruby is quite the little actress.

Steve Quast

There has been a couple of times when I felt like I was watching a movie with SPN, some shoots are a beautiful masterpiece and yeah, the beginning of this episode feels like it, there’s one episode to stands up as a movie like for me, tho. Also, what was the reason for leave the samulet? I don’t remember it, or were you talking about what happened on the show? Im not sure about the order of you top 5 rewatch but if there’s a vote on it I would like to watch “the end” next and maybe “point of no return” after that, cause for me those episodes they’re fighting for free will and standing up against what heaven/hell wants from them, so for me it makes sense but whichever order Im fine with it. Great reaction!

I love this episode more every time I watch it.. To me, it's always been obvious that Dean was lying when he said he didn't remember Hell. The way he looks at Sam as he says it, as if he's ashamed ...
