Really enjoy your rewatches. I just love your energy and enthusiasm overall. You take me back to what feels like eons ago when I watched an episode for the first time(I won't embarrass myself by confessing how many times I've watched the entire series through the years between my DVDs in the early days and later - thanks Netflix- since it would suggest I have no life......). Beyond that there is a list of go to episodes I probably will never stop rewatching. For me, Skin and Something Wicked from season 1start the ball rolling. Something Wicked gave us the sad reality of the boys early years. It freaking kills me every time when Dean says John never looked at him the same way again. All Hell Breaks Loose 2 (yeah, I know, for me , it's about Dean again: I promise you all I love Sam too!) Really it's about Jensen and his performance talking to Sam's dead body. 16 years later and I'm still riveted and cry when I watch it. Houses of the Holy stands out as you said, with how dark the subject matter becomes. It hurts so much to see Sam desperate to be proven right and then remember how let down he is after he's had encounters with Uriel and Castiel. I wonder too, if Dean found a new comfort in the end when he begins thinking he may have seen evidence of God's will. With that door opened he may not have been so angry and disillusioned about Mary telling him angels were watching over him. It's interesting to listen to his conversation regarding the existence of angels with Sam and then jump to season 4 and get the expanded version once Castiel has been revealed. Lazarus Rising is a huge favorite for me. I'm so on board with you doing a rewatch!!!! Btw I just watched Jensen's panel at their first LIVE con since Covid He talked a little about Benny's storyline and wanting to delve further into it. Asked what other SPN character he would choose to play he said Benny. Can't tell you any more than that without spoilers so..........๐Ÿคท But I know how much you like Benny. And between us girls, Jensen looked great.

I love these rewatches. Kripke was against adding angels, because he felt if done badly, it would offend a lot of people and doom the show. Sera was one of the people who wanted angels in it. This episode was largely to test the audience reaction to an angel storyline in a situation where they could backtrack and saym "No angels are not in this universe." As it happened, viewers loved this one and were excited about angels. The reaction to this one is what ultimately led to Cas.

Amazing reaction to an amazing episode, shelley ๐Ÿ‘, somehow your surprise rewatches always come in a day where I need them the most, wasn't feeling good today at all but watching this cheered me up ๐Ÿ˜, while yes kripke didn't want to involve angels he also said that some writers have been asking him to do it & he was saying no until the writer's strick happened so my guess is on sera gamble being one of those writers

But what if there were orders ๐Ÿ‘€ we know the demons kept an eye on sam, it's not a reach to think maybe the angels kept an eye on Michael's vessel imo, angels can be invisible, i am not saying he was but i am also not saying he wasn't ๐Ÿคฃ it's just something to think about

Hasnaa

I need to add something. I really doubt that Cas was showing up at all at this point. Retconning to think that he was. Cas clearly had very little clue about humans and no empathy for them when he first shows up, so why would he have involved himself. Plus, Cas was a good soldier and wouldn't have done anything like this without orders. Not back then.

Yes. This episode is usually underappreciated. It's a weird experience watching a new reactor watch this episode, knowing what we know now. There was not actual purposeful angel hints in the show until season 4. Any resemblances was a happy coincidence - or purposeful connections to past episodes. One thing that always hurts my heart is seeing how different they were back then. Especially Dean. He just seemed less burdened back then. Generally more relaxed and in a good mood a lot of the time. Seeing him after all that's happened just hurts. I really miss season 1 Dean some times. Sam's desire for it to really be angels is reflected in future seasons as well. His desire for there to be some higher purpose. Some goodness that can come out of the bad. When he goes into drinking demon blood and working with Ruby it was because he thought he could bring something good out of something bad. That he could turn his curse of the demon blood into doing something good by killing Lilith. It's something that you can see in Sam throughout the seasons so far, IMO. When Dean said that he thought he saw God's influence, I think that he was partly saying that for Sam's benefit. He didn't want to see Sam so down and losing faith, so he said what he did. Maybe he believed it a bit, but I think it was mostly for Sam's benefit.

Dean last line gave me chills!! I need to rewatch the show with different eyes

This was amazing!! Thank you so much for doing these re-watches!! They're such a wonderful little treat!! During the episode, I was trying to telepathically remind you that this one wasn't actually angels, that it was the priest all along, hence the non-burnt out eyes. LOL! Yes, at this point, angels weren't around on earth, or at least not actively showing themselves to humans. In 4 x 02 Cas says to Dean, "Why do you think we're here, walking among you now, for the first time in 2000 years?" and Dean replies, "To stop Lucifer." So, before 4 x 01 angels did not reveal themselves to humans, so that was why there was absolutely NO evidence that they did exist. When it comes to the disgusting r*pist in the car, I've always thought there were two possibilities that would work within the canon of the show for how and why he ended up dead, because as you said, we do know God is definitely NOT hands on in this universe. I don't personally believe in the idea of "God's will" because while I do believe in a higher power, I also believe COMPLETELY in free will. So, whatever creator exists in the Universe, we were gifted free will to make our own choices whether good or bad. So, I've always equated the idea of "God's will" with Karma. So, no, an omniscient being isn't deciding everyone's fate, but our free will and our choices create ripple effects, that lead to karmic consequences. (Again, just my personal belief, no offense meant, but it does fit with what we know of the Supernatural universe.) So, because Douchebag chose to attack that woman and because Dean chose to stop him and then chose not to let him get away, all of those choices led to the karmic consequence of being in that intersection at that exact moment, which led to the r*pist being shish kabob-ed. So, when Dean says he saw, "God's will" I've always thought maybe he was referring to that, that feeling that something slightly more than just simple events led to his death. The other option, I've considered since discovering that angels do exist in this universe is that maybe it was one of the (admittedly few!) good angels working invisibly. Maybe they saw that he was getting away and decided to take care of the situation themselves. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ Just an idea. Maybe Cas was already following Dean around and decided to give him a hand! ๐Ÿ˜ LOVED the Michael thing! Obviously they couldn't have meant anything by it in this episode, but it is SO perfect in the long run. I mean, Sam is pointing at the painting, but he absolutely looks like he is pointing directly at Dean when he says, "Father, that's Michael, right?" ๐Ÿ˜ฒ And yes, our little summer children - babies!! Sweet, sweet Sammy and Pre-Hell Dean. I think you're right, in a lot of ways Dean has mellowed and opened up, everything isn't nearly as black and white for him anymore. But also, he tended to be a little lighter, (less so in this episode) just not as much weighing him down, if that makes sense. So amazing to see the growth and change in the characters. I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see you do a re-watch of Lazarus Rising! I can't wait to watch those re-watch reactions!! This was so cool, Shelley! Thanks again for fitting these re-watches into your already packed schedule - they're so appreciated!! ๐Ÿ’“ You rock! โœŠ๐Ÿค˜

I think this might have been a test to see how the subjects of angels was received. I love the Michael bit Sam: that's Michael right? (points towards Dean haha, the true vessel) I loved your reaction to this. You've gone from someone watching and enjoying a show to a super fan!

What a treat, a rewatch and all the way back to Sn 2! They were such pre-Cas baby faces. What a great foundational episode because even though it wasn't an angel, and even though the angels didn't turn out to be who we thought they might be, it adds such a layer to be built upon. Sam and Dean's ideas of faith, free will and a dose of destiny too.. There is so so much that weaves into where we are now and where we are going. It all seems so seamless for a show that after season 5 wasn't sure where it was going next. AND, nice shout out to an incredible film, "Frailty" starring the late and always great Bill Paxton. RIP to an amazing talent, one of my favorite actors of all time! I definitely see the relationship there. All your top 5 are great ones and I will be there for that. I have watched The Man Who Would be King with you, no lie, at least 5 or 6 times!. I loved your reaction to that one as much as I am loving all the Benny episode from season 8 that I have also watch with you many times. What can i say you are way better than anything on cable.
